When it comes to ICE I'm a complete idiot, & I've got a situation in my car I would like a bit of advice on.

Basically I've no room for a head unit, all my speakers are still in, & I'm looking for a way of getting some music into my car.

I was thinking of getting something like an ipod & getting it to power my car speakers (would I need an amp to do this???? ie ipod into amp then onto speakers???). Any advice on getting music into my car without a typical head unit greatly appreciated, makes/models/links.

Also my speakers are probably stock, whats the best value for money (with decent quality) speakers I can get to replace the front door & rear seat that will just bolt straight in (or with very minor mods) don't want to start cutting masses of plastic away to fit some humongous base speakers in :D

Yeah no worries, I removed it to make way for a set of defis

Why did I put the defi's there I hear you ask? :D Basically I don't like gauges stuck all over the place, I wanted the interior to appear as close to stock as possible.

Okay well, thats I really nice setup, I understand now...I also thought about the glove box or trying place another unit somewhere but judging by your perfection I doubt you find a suitable place for it even with a remote.

So this is the idea that I had if it works, which would look alot neater, but no radio unless you find one that has. Or anything else along these lines.

Use the audio cable and run it to an amp (use an rca splitter on the single audio lead to give you right and left) and then run your speakers from the amp (it will have to be a 2 channel running in 2ohms and run your front and back speakers in parallel, maybe no tweeters though unless you use another pair.

Then you can plug your ipod/usb in it and bobs your uncle.

Gorgeous. :) Ican make out 4 gauges, what's the bottom right gauge measuring, and where'd you get the dash panel to fit them in? :)

Silky, I can't access the page, prolly an ebay problem, will try again later, but I saw the title & that is a beaut idea. That's exactly along my wave length, I would not have thought of that!!! So pleased I asked now :D

Bottom right is Fuel Pressure IIRC Andy, the panel was custom made by me hacking away at my original one, with a bit of wood & fibreglass too :)

Lol, nice idea though Shane, but the idea of having it mounted in the sun visor is just so sweet :)

I was going to get one or two of these units and install them, but not sure 100% if they would be able to connect to an amp alone, may need 'audio in' aswell. But the principle idea is there. Just type in 'DVD Visor' in the ebay search page, and you can get them in black.

Definately loving the visor idea, whether I go with one of those, or a custom setup I don't know, but I def want it there now I've seen that.

Here is an option. Takes a bit of work, but it would work. Get something like an alpine ipod controlling headunit. Have the ipod cable installed somewhere like the glove box. This is the interesting bit. Remember, the head unit isn't a single piece these days.. You have a removeable front...that is the key..removeable... So you could put the head unit somewhere else and run a new lead which joins the face plate to the head unit. The face plate could be mounted on the sunvisor for instance. or just in front of the gearstick... or on the centre console...

I've just rang the place Steve mentioned, they're gonna have a look tomorrow, I think if you look on the link Steve posted they've done something like what you're on about (there's a car with a grey roof with what looks like a face place mounted in it).

When I called to explain my predicament, he said "got gauges all over the place?", "yes" I replied, "no problem, we've done done loads of cars who have no room for a standard stereo" he said :D

Will let you know how I get on, cheers for all the tips though

why not get your self a stereo that you can use an ipod with and put it in the top glovebox, stick a small mono amp under your passenger seat and put a small sub box in the boot, replace the door speakers with some good after market ones and job is a good one

Well I went up to Bassmechanix this morning, I have to say I was massively impressed with their whole organisation.

One of the top guys (Monty) went through everything with me. This guy is amazing BTW, he really knows his stuff, he uses these laser units to position speakers so he knows where the sound is travelling to. He's currently doing a thesis on the effects ambient in car temperature has on music.

We started in the car where we talked about what sort of setup I wanted (something classy which would suit the rest of the interior styling, also something that would be completely black when off - exactly like my Defi's), his eyes were all over checking the car out to see what could go where.

I was initially after some sort of touch screen MP3 player mounted in the sun visor. He explained how they take a stereo with a flip off front & mount the flip part in one place, then hide the main head unit under the seat say. He said he had a perfect head unit, he wanted everything to match the Defi's so he showed me this unit, it had touchscreen operation, went completely black when off, & you could adjust the RGB on the display to match the Defi's exactly!!! It was perfect. He is going to mount it flush in the roof just in-front of the interior lights.

So now he asks me what type of music I like, which is Eminem/D12/Dre etc. I'd told him I didn't need a base speaker, so he took me over to a sound setup, put some Cyprus Hill on & asked me what I thought. Pretty flat I said, he then added just a little bit of base, what a massive difference!!! He said base speakers don't necessarily mean those massive upside down ones you see in a lot of boot builds, he said he can put some 8" or 10" ones where the rear quarter ones are now, totally hidden.

He's going to do a very small install in the boot with a black amp (again so it's very clean & unnoticeable) which will help hide the ugly battery I have in the boot.

So for speakers he's doing better ones in the front doors & subs in back quarters (he said 2 front speakers are more than adequate for a Supra sized cabin), custom amp build in the back, head-unit under the seat & faceplate in the custom roof build. An additional MP3 socket will be hidden in the glove box in case I want to plug my ipod in.

In summary it's going to be sweet, full pics will be up once sorted. Big  Steve for pointing me in this direction, & massive thanks for everyone else's input, wouldn't have happened without you guys.

Will also get the full list of parts up once he's emailed me the full spec.

Sounds good buddy, but don't be fooled by all the technical stuff though. I have been doing ICE installs for 17 years and it's not rocket science.

The idea of getting small subs 8" or 10" is a good idea if you don't won't booming sounds, but why not I say if your listening to Dr Dre. I would go for just 1 10" or 12" in one of the quarters, and as far as the door speakers are concerned, 1 set of speakers will not be enuf to balance the sound across the whole car. There will be a gap in the middle, most likely in the mid range area, you really need to disperse the sound across the whole cabin not just the front to get a quality sound so I would recommend something in the rear panels too.. This means using the correct combination of speakers.

Good luck with the install and look forward to seeing the pics when it is done.
