Kinda of a newbie with questions

Hi all, been on here for some time now and an owner of a white N/A 93 car for th epast 13 months. It's had a somewhat hard life since i have owned it being used as my company car and piling 30 thousand miles in that time (no major problems other than tyres) which has been brilliant.

I have just had a new Hilux (another Toyota lol) 3.o Invincible, lovely truck, which I am now using for company work, not quite the same though.

The Supra's been in my garage for the last month or so while I debated what to do with it. Ideally I want to restore some pride in it and it needs some work so advice please would be appreciated.

1. Last October whilst driving to fast back from Cardiff Airport and missing the roundabout sign on the back roads, I locked up the car and since then there has been a thumping noise from what I would say is teh front left wheel side. Local garage said it was diff !! which they replaced (okay didnt pay as the car was still under warranty) Anyway since gettin it back it has been the same but I have covered about 3,000 miles and it just makes a noise, much less at speed. Might need to get it to a good Supra garage any recommendations Swansea area or Bristol where my office is preferrably but will travel for right place.

2. I have broken my front end lip spoiler (damned sleeper hidden in a car park hedge) so am thinking of replacing front bumper with a nice one, any suggestions? Car has side skirts, spats, aftermarket rear spoiler (very heavy lol) so new front end would finsih car off nicely I am thinking.

3. Need to get a new rear hatch possibly or some major bodywork done as its rusted in the corner, really strange as if the car has been parked at an angle and the water has collected in teh one spot for years, close to rear window corner. Any one suggest best place to either get a replacement rear hatch or a good bodyshop again similar areas to above?

4. On point 2 and 3 above I guess going down this route ultimately I will need some paintwork done and to cap it all I caught the side skirt on a kerb the other day, no cracks just a little scrape, so I am thinking I might get a respray done, anyone got suggestions of somewhere good and also ideas of costs?

5. My tyres are being eaten, I know I do a lot of miles but they are only being eaten on the insides, both sides front and back? Any suggestions, had the car tracked and checked after last set?

What would be good is if I could find a reputable garage that is prepared to take all of this work on, I am all ears guys and looking forward to restoring my car back to the way it should be, after all it has looked after me for the last year through hell and high water and boy has it been fun.

Thanks for taking the time on any replies.

Tim

I can probably answer point 5.

Sounds to me like the cars been lowered but the camber hasn't been adjusted so the wheels are pointing in and are wearing away! This happened on my last supra and i had the camber readjusted at a specialist! Alot of places wont touch camber on lowered cars though (well not around Dorset at least)!

Hello Taffy Tim and welcome :)

Firstly, as you are close to Bristol, I would suggest giving Jody a shout at Interpro. He is a registered trader here and could look at the mechanical problems you have.

I would suggest you contact Jezz (another member of the forum) who works for a salvage dealer and should be able to help you with the rear hatch.

As for your bodywork, I would have a look in the multimedia section for ideas on body kits etc. Then, once again speak to Jody to see who they might recommend as a body shop that is close to you.

I'm really sorry but i have to ask why you were driving through a car park hedge in the first place?

But anyway it all depends on how much you want to pay on spray jobs, also there isn't many places which will do all the things on your list. Regarding the negative camber which is causing the tire wear, you should be able to pick up a camber adjustment kit from somewhere like demon tweeks but there is a lot of people on here who will know a lot more than me.

No no no, camber adjustment kits or adjustable pillar top mounts are not the correct way to adjust the camber. You do need to have the camber adjusted from the proper points under the car, and the normal tracking check garages won't offer this service. You need to hunt around for a garage to do it properly. I had this issue with my NA when I first bought, a full set of tyres eaten in three months.

If you end up paying thousands of pounds for bodywork and re-spray then please try to be a bit more careful and stop "clipping" bits of the car on the landscape.

Number one sound like a flat spot. How badly did you lock up? Have a good look at your tyres. Interesting that the garage thought it was diff trouble coming from the front.

Oh, and slow down.

Yes, that is odd, but thats Toyota techs for you, just replace something rather than trying to find a problem. Could be a bearing, or thinking laterally, if the tyres are wearing on the inside, maybe a large strip of rubber is flying out under centrafugal/petal force and banging the arch liner, which is why you hear it at speed. I've heard this happen before. Could be a flat spot RedM, but he'd have to have done a hell of a slide. I know its a problem with F1 cars but they are right on the edge anyway.
