JamesC
I was down at the Toyota dealership today picking some pads up and while i was there i got a quote for an engine oil and gearbox oil change, got a quote for £40-45 for each of them. To me that seems cheap... so anyone know what type of oil they use? Would you have it in your car?
Digsy
I believe it varies from dealership to dealership. They will (should be) using the correct viscosity, but 10W30 is hard to find so they'll probably be using a 10W40. It won't be anything special, though (the service book doesn't call for anything more exotic than a semi synthetic). My local dealer used to use Castrol Magnatec 10W40. Phone them up and ask them. JamesC
Ok thanks. What about the gearbox oil? Can you get good and bad stuff or is it all pretty much the same?
Paul Whiffin
You should use Toyota's own V160 gearbox oil only, Toyota dont sell it anymore but I have some here if needed. £25 + VAT per litre and you need 2. Ta
JamesC
Ok cheers Paul. I'm guessing Toyota would just put any old stuff in then?

Ta I dont fully agree, although its recommended, there must be alternatives about nowadays Paul. Oils come along way since 1993/4....Please dont take that in a sarcastic way in the slightest as I certainly dont mean it like that, I just think it would be interesting to discuss I believe it varies from dealership to dealership. Digsy, I asume this would be ok for standard (ish) car would it? ie stock twins upto BPU? Whats the lifespan like compared to silkolene or something similar, would it be any harder wearing? Paul Whiffin
I thought it has been discusssed on here already? I can supply "modern" gear oil as well if you really want it of course.
