An explanation:

When you are a teenager you think your parents know nothing. Then, a few years later when you a bit older and beset with big life decisions and pressures you turn to them for advice and are amazed at how much they've learnt since you were 16. Except they haven't learnt anything. They knew all along but the average teenager never accepts that.
