An MOT is strictly speaking only valid during the test. Once the car is driven off site, yes the certificate is valid, HOWEVER if you get pulled over and you have a fault that would normally be an MOT failure they can regard your car as not having an MOT. These-by-the road MOT testings by the police can declare your car as an MOT failure. Yes, you are allowed to drive it to a pre-arranged MOT retest, however I wouldn't risk driving it around with just a failure certificate.
