Told this morning (after buying what was needed including Stereo) that as it's a Japanese car they won't fit it!!!

Said it was a difficult job removing the whole dash ect - I suspect they're sending me up the garden path, as it was free fitting!

Any ideas of how much a basic install will cost me and were any decent places are in the Clacton/Colchester East Anglia area?

Thanks

My UK spec is a Japanese car too - would they refuse to do that?

Silly sods, it's the same screws in the same places :)

It's a fairly easy job to do yourself if you can spin a screwdriver, there are even a few dash removal / stereo fitting guides on here.

Its because its harder then pulling out old sterio, pushing new one in....... the only diff between jap cars and "normal" cars is how the units held, they dont use the crappy cages, but 4 bolts into the sides.

Do it yourself, youll do a better job, and learn something in the process

I did not see on any of there 'Free Fitting' posters any disclaimer, does not suprise me though and when you see the chaps who are going to fit the thing, fresh out of school, would you want them removing your dash :D

To be honest they are probably doing you a favour - I'd still kick up a fuss about it though ;)

It shouldn't take someone who knows what they are doing more than an hour to remove the old one and fit the new.

I agree, it's a case of well it's free fitting, bugger of a job, can't be asked, it's raining outside and i could be inside selling some wheels etc!!

Being a pen pusher, don;t know my arse from my elbow, so will probably search around to have it fitted. Last thing i want to do, is break/snap something!

Yeh and they don't ask you to sign anything waiving your rights of recourse, if they f..k something up.

I think it's a case of, if it don't slip in and out easily don't bother:innocent:

If it were me, I'd request a refund for anything you've bought off them (stereo, connectors, blanking plates etc) just to make a point. You can say that you bought it all on the pretense of them fitting it for free, and that they have mis-sold you the goods. ;)

I'd then go to a local car audio shop and see if you can get something similar that meets your requirements. These can usually be haggled down in price, quite often with free fitting, and you can be a lot more confident in their abilities than the spotty oiks from halfrauds. :)

I would get a refund mate as they arn't the cheapest place for car sterios and equipment anyway.

Go to a specialist car audio shop and im sure they will fit for free.

The guys at Halfords Exeter fitted a Sony unit for me in 5 mins and throw in the loom for free because he forgot to chage me before he came out to fit it.:d

Okay, I'll be honest, I wouldn't let the usual halford monkey's near the car in first place. They are mostly just young kids who probably are used to sliding an ISO unit into a cage after connecting up the 2 blocks.

Thank you for offering your time mate.

I have had it fitted, but now the ariel is not popping up as it should! Will be taking it back next week (they said they would sort it) to resolve the problem.

In the end i took it to a Audio place in Clacton and seemed pretty helpful and not bad prices either.

Took everything back to Halfrauds and asked for a refund - wasn't going to give them my money after the hassle they gave me.

Once again Thank you kind sir

Its a bit different with JDM cars, more labour for them.

Yup. In fact, I'll try and get me a job at halfords, so I can learn the ropes, and look after any imports coming my way.

Exactly. They are quite well trained in audio section and specialist sections, just some of them are a bit young and don't know. Bless. Might even be their first ever job.

Charlton! I used to work there, mid '90s, in the bike dept.

I had to read this thread after shamefully working for hellfrauds!

After somebody in my particular store totally f**ked up somebody's dashboard and jap wiring, we were advised not to attempt hifi fits into jap cars, as we were being asked to pay HUGE repair bills on snapped bits and bobs..

And yes, the less time spent on fitting = we had more time to sell more highly over priced stereos to customers!

I had 12.5% discount when i worked there and i could still find stereos cheaper from high street shops!

My last top tip would be to avoid buying ISO looms & conenctors from there, i took my toyota loom back which cost £18 after buying a brand new one on ebay for £5.50!

I'd lastly like to add that not all of us were "kids" which worked there, some of us did know what we were doing.... i think?! :)

Happy Shopping!

I'm sorry i did not mean to offend anyone.

Problem was I was still teething when i wrote the arcticle!

Certainly some items are overpriced - i bought my new Audio Sony kit yesterday and it was £20 cheaper than Halfords, but for other bits and bobs, it's just the convenience sometimes.

lol, no worries bud, no offence taken!

its just a pitty that they dont have the balls to train some stores up to deal with jap cars again..

In all fairness, they do have great offers with car wash products, long live 3 for 2's on turtle wax! :)

To be honest, yes there is the very odd exception to Halfords workers that actually know how to fit a head unit, but most of them dont seem bothered, have had to clear up many ICE messes from many high street stores. Would also advise going to a decent professional ICE installer, plus Halfords prices on head units are a joke. Go in see the head unit you like then buy it online, I saved £400 in 5 mins buying mine, and they are still knocking it out at £1200. Shame you are not a bit closer to my area or would have fitted the head unit for free, not exactly a difficult job if you know what you are doing.

Thanks James - all sorted now, but i think i will steer clear of Halfords.

10 years again they absolutely recked my car installing some speakers, so should've known!

Pointless, but just to say my Brother is a regional trainer/fitter with Halfords after spending 3 years learning his trade at an independant retailer and knows his stuff-Yes rare for Halfords but not a monkey as they're often stereotyped lol!

So anyone at the Silverlink/North Shields will get good service :)

Actually halfords have instructions to fit to the MKiv. If they refuse they might be short staffed, or just too busy, but just tell them its in the difficult fit database on the intranet.
