View Full Version : Nurburgring Trip 2008! 24th-> 29th July
Reminder: 7 days to pay accommodation balance if you haven't already.
Hey guys straight to the point!
The oppertunity for me to go on this trip has arised I would realy like to go.. Problem car will NOT be running for quite a while which means I can't drive across so I ask anyone who has room for 1 more, I am willing to put towards the cost of fuel etc, if I can jump in with them on this trip! Let me know asap thanks
If i could squeeze you in buddy i would, i have no back seats but i`m sure someone has a space,:)
Same here - but in reality Supra don't really have back seats. Not ones I'd be willing to sacrifice front seat leg room for, for a cross-europe journey! :P
Ark just PM'd me about the spare slot too....
yeah leg room is key on a cross country journey :D thanks anyway
Reminder: 5 days till the deadline to get the accommodation funds in!
Cheers! :)
Steve - clear your PMs. Sent you an email - may be able to arrange a spare seat. Not able to use forum for next 4 days. If you can sort anything, ring my mobile

oops sorry. My PM box always seems to have issues; it wasn't even 1/4 fiull but I've deleted loads anyway. Will check emails & call you tonight...
Steve, Jon - to save separate PMs and to clarify, since I think there's been some confusion:
I'd like to tag along, with my car and woman. Have the recent changes in room allocations made this impossible?

Nope - if you want to come, the double/twin room that ShamelessTT had got booked - is yours. Do you 100% definitely want it? If so I'll forward you instructions on booking the ferry & paying for the room. (That's all you would need to do before July)
Cheers!
Can ShamelessTT (Si) please PM me regarding the ferry crossing, as I've not heard anything fom him since last Wednesday
Ark & Robbie; I need to know - in the next 24 hours - if you're in or out.
Hi Steve. My circumstances have not changed since my last post.
If by some small chance I get to take the trip then I'll say over in Dusseldorf.
Ark & Robbie; I need to know - in the next 24 hours - if you're in or out.
I'm afraid I'm out this time - I can't afford to take my car to Germany one month after taking the wifes Subaru out there with her club :(

Decide quickly - I'm confirming our needs with the B&B tonight, I could hold off 'till tomorrow at a push. Ta!
Chris - I've got 2 spare seats if you still want to come for the ride. I'm taking the Supra and my Bro in the MR2
Thanks for the offer, but it's not just the travel costs :(
Being a contractor I can't really afford the time out of work too...it's been an expensive time recently.
noted. Sorry you can't come :(

Just spent the afternoon on the Ring in Forza2 :D
Just spent the afternoon on the Ring in Forza2 :D
Get the practice in, ive just been watching my vids from last year,:)
My Forza skills still involve crashing at every corner.
Lucky I have the advantage of the perfect-handling FWD chassis, lots of torque steer and too much power for my brakes -that'll all help to keep me on the track :)
Car's getting a thorough going-over on Tuesday to see whether I need to get anything done before the trip. I think it's all sound, but as SteveR knows, a car can hold many surprises...

Well, it seems my pessimism was misplaced, and from a chat with Steve at work today he seems to be happy about the work this place has performed on his car.
Shame my car has standard suspension otherwise it might be worth going there for some tweaking, but at least it has a clean bill of health after yesterday's service. Just got to decide whether to take it on a little pre-Ring trackday or keep the miles down and try not to break it...
Thats my dilema atm, i want to give it a thrashing but wary about breaking something serious and not be able to fix it before the trip, but on the other hand i`d rather it break here than in germany,:)

Key here is........Dont use Ebay parts :p
Ryan - can you tell me how to make my air con work (I bought the car Jake had)?
Si tells me we may have to call upon your services for a tweak if we get our wastegates plumbed through the exhaust system, too?
Yes And Yes
Best PM though as dont want this thread OT

True, we'd best not clutter it up with 19 pages of chit chat ;) :innocent:

Lol, yes that was a costly pipe coupler was`nt it,:)
If you are after the radios that Steve has suggested for the trip, which seems like a good idea, then Argos appear to finally be getting some stock from 3rd June.
Link here (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001001&langId=-1&searchTerms=TP380&Submit=GO+%3E)
From a bit of searching around, they are the cheapest place to buy these radios.
Cheers Gavin
Please can every car have a suitible radio (decent = at least a few km range, with the 'sub channel' capability). They help enormously! :)

:ban:Can you simply tell if Runescape (http://www.usfine.com/Runescape-Powerleveling-c-90.html) is a great game maplestory powerleveling (http://www.usfine.com/Maple-Story-PowerLeveling-c-98.html) or not without you becoming a member? The answer to that would be, NO! Well you can make a few predictions about Runescape (http://www.usfine.com/Runescape-Powerleveling-c-90.html) and see the moral of the game when being a regular user and not a member but becoming a member brings a whole lot of additions to Runescape that you would never see if you were not a member. Being a member of Runescape (http://www.usfine.com/Runescape-Powerleveling-c-90.html) has so many benefits and I will try to list them all here for you. Runescape tells you them, but I'm going to detail it a few features for you here. runescape money (http://www.money-runescape.net/)

Clue: don't forget the km markers are based on the S/F line (i.e. 0km) being at T13 (the first proper R-hand bend, by the spectator stand).
Oh yes!
Practiced on the XBox, you have. :D
Still on gt4 dude, the track is more realistic.

We'll see :D
Well, I now have a 360 steering wheel rigged up for Forza2 and am putting in the laps:D
I'm trying to drive sensibly, rather than nailing it and crashing, as though were actually my car. Got round in 9:50 today in an MR2 (which is spec'd to same BHP as mine which my brother is driving) with one small off on the grass for a 3 seconds penalty. Working up to the Supra :D

Even in a game it's quite difficult to aim to go fast but stay reigned-in enough to not come off the track at all, isn't it? It took me ages till I got to that point; something I remember before every real lap I set out on - I might think I know what I'm doing, but let's not push that theory. ;)
My real life bridge-to-gantry time in my Stock TT was the same as my Forza time (same car) when driving as fast as I dare but without risking coming off. :D
I'm going to put all my new geometry settings into the in-game version of my single turbo Supe (Forza 2).... and NOT time it! lol. :)

What was your BTG time then matey?,:d
9:30 was the best one I, erm, someone else timed. I didn't time any. :innocent:
I expect to beat that by miles even without upping cornering speed TBH. Above all I hope to continue to be smooth, and track a good line. I find as much satisfaction from learning & knowing where & what the track does as anything else. :)
Backing off mid-lap and admiring the scenery (without being a hazard to anyone else) is cool, too. I have a wide aresenal of lap types. :D
You getting the exhaust done today??
Hey fellows ... I will pass at the Ring to see you all ( only 80 mls away from Luxembourg) :)

:(
Anyone thought of getting tickets to the DTM? Might be worth a look seeing as we're there anyway...
Another thought... I was thinking of taking a trip out one day driving down to Trier and up the Mosel Valley to Koblenz. Anyone else thinking of taking a day off the Ring to see a bit of Germany?
We'll probably be looking to do something else on either Saturday or Sunday when the track will be v.busy, maybe heading off to find some interesting places.
Haven't really thought about what that could be though, there are plenty of places within sensible driving distance.
Yeh that would be good and i`d also like to see some dtm.
I was planning on snooping on the DTM over the fence. ;)
If there is some Friday morning practice sessions for not too much £$ then I'd be interested. I definitely plan on doing something touristy on the Monday, as the track doesn't open 'till the evening. Could be up for some weekend sight-seeing too, around the middle of the day when the track is too busy (I'll be there first thing & last thing doing laps! :D)
Today, I wrote a comprehensive list of everything I need to do to the car before we go. Put it this way, I'd better crack on!! I did scratch a few things off, most importantly I've done my (second) oil & filter change. :)
We're booked in here (http://www.am-tiergarten.de/en/restaurant/) for the first night's eating :)
Bring on the steak on a hot stone!
Sounds excellent :friday:
Just what we will need after a long day and a few interesting laps.
Every time It looks like I might be able to escape the clutches of this house build I end up having to sort out another mess.
My most recent disaster included the bricklayers overloading the 1st floor joist hangers with bricks, resulting in the floor collapsing. Luckily nobody was hurt that badly but this has put the project back by a couple more weeks.:taped::taped: So I'm finding myself having to wait and see if I'll be catching the ferry with you guys or not.

If you guys are even pondering it, I'd highly recommend a drive down the Mosel. Cochem is my favorite town on the river and has a great castle that was rebuilt to be inhabitable and now does tours. There's a great road behind it and further down the river is Trabben-Trabbach, another great town (two actually). If you need any info, let me know.
How far are these places from the Ring? :)

Steve, it's about 30-40 minutes down to the Mosel and then you can drive up to an hour and a half each way up and down the Mosel if you want. I wouldn't advise trying to go all the way to Trier though.

I had the geo done on mine (inc corner weighting - a mustIMHO after having it done) and it transformed the car. I can send you my settings if you want them, for info/use?

Centre Gravity near Tamworth - I went on the back of this recommendation/write up (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=118573). :)
Before, I would easily get wheelspin in 5th on a dry straight road without even reaching WOT, now I can boot it in 2nd even in light rain and usually not break traction. The car is SO grippy and I didn't go mental on the settings so tyre wear won't be far off stock. :)

Gavin & Naomi might like a passenger run in your Supe at smoe point over the trip if you don't mind Darren, don't tell anyone but Gavin is thinking about getting one. :)
How is everyones cars looking, any jobs left to do?
Up until Friday my car was ready to go...
It had an MOT, passed, but with an advisory on front brake balance for which they suggested new disks & pads (they had plenty left for Ring trip).
Anyway, new disks (Brembo) and Pads (Ferodo DS2500) bought, and SteverR came round last night for a fitting session.
Came to get the car out (had been in there for 4 days) and battery completely dead. Not just flat, but 0.05 volts dead. It did this before a couple of years ago.
Anyway, need new battery and to get the charging system checked as well as getting the disks and pads fitted and properly bedded it.
Probably still less work than Steve has to do...
I'll update my list after the weekend, when hopefully it'll be half as long! :(

Wish I could be there D, but work comes first man. Yes, you're right, Vegas is good times, unless you're working your butt off and flying all the time. Keep your supra stock, you'll have a blast on the track. Just don't push beyond your or the car's limits.
You were going to fit that suspension 2 years ago!
Actually that was just the rear lower control arms mate. I since found out that the springs/struts were worn (one in particular actually), so I chose to upgrade. Besides, you know how life can get busy sometimes. With my flying and traveling schedule sometimes it difficult to get a whole day or two to work on the car.

Chris is spot on, but be warned that the price has gone up a fair whack (50%!) if you want the job lot done. I can't recommend it enough though, my car was dangerus before, now it's compliant, fun and confidence inspiring yet will still understeer at the limit s you know when yuo've got there (plus the P Zero Rossos I've got on the front squeel when they get near the limit).

I'll call them and hopefully mine wont be too expensive as im not on coilovers, just camber, castor and toe to be checked and adjusted.
Well, my single-turbo seems to be ready after the front disks and pads went in (http://www.sevenman.f2s.com/blog/?p=121) and it has a new battery. £330 I could have done with saving for food/beer/fuel/laps on the trip, but never mind, cars always come first

You're up! I'll be leaving in 10 mins or so matey :)
Have been looking at a few possible non-Ring drives, for those wanting to do something else or when the track is closed for the day and we're waiting until evening:
The first one is a route from Koblenz down the Mosel Valley to Trier, then up the Lux/Ger border and cross the River Our to Bitburg then back to Nurburg. Drive time approx 5h30mins
Second is a trip over to see Spa in Belgium (could do this on way home?) its about 1h45 mins from Nurburg
Third is a drive down to Mulhouse which is the French Motor Museum, approx 4 hours: http://www.collection-schlumpf.com/en/schlumpf/
Could also go through the Black Forest on this one, but would make it further
We went route 2 on the way there last year, it's quite a drag but then we didnt' peel off to look at Spa. Always an option! :)
The others sound nice too, but personally I don't think I'll venture quite that far from the track. I wouldn't mind a non-Ring half day, possibly at the weekend but we do have to find something to do on the Monday ('till it opens again at ~5pm :sly:).
ALL: I'll send out a final PM tonight/tomorrow with meeting up-details, last preparation checklist type stuff, etc.
Don't forget your Walkie Talkies, they are an absolute godsend from my PoV during the convoy.

Yup, on my phone - same setup I took last year. Plan to go the least 'fussy' route there so we maximise the few potential rest hours between arriving at the B&B and then the track opening later in the evening for those that fancy it. ;)

Hope you guys have a good trip :)
If you are looking to go sightseeing then try Cochem or Koblenz.... these are both scenic towns not too far from the track. Both also have nice interesting 'A' roads for a picturesque drive.
Or if you are looking for some Autobahn high speed stuff, then a day trip to Luxemburg is always a good choice. (Cheaper fuel to fill up on the return journey to the track).
Or for some fun then there is a Rodelbahn not far from the track..... head out through Adenau and stay on the same road for about 15-20 mins..... it is on the left hand side.
:) :) :) :)
Thanks Aron :)
BTW do you happen to know where the nearest V-Power to the track can be found, I know there is a database of Shell stations I can search online but haven't got round to it yet. Bignum & another chap on the trip are keen to use that if at all possible. I'll stick with normal SUL. ;)
If I got the time for it. I will visit you at the Nürburgring. Is only 2 hours drive for me. I am planning to go on the 27th.
I think the nearest V-Power is in Koblenz - nice 20 minute drive.
However, there is a blue-painted petrol station in Adenau (it's where the second ring-entrance is) with 99Ron (here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=petrol&near=adenau&ie=UTF8&ll=50.378019,6.949507&spn=0.004523,0.009388&t=h&z=17&iwloc=A)), and of course there is 97 Ron available just down the road from the main ring entrance (here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=petrol&near=nurburg&ie=UTF8&ll=50.35143,6.981651&spn=0.002263,0.004694&t=h&z=18)).

Hmmm I've used that station and dont' remember it having anything special, maybe 99RON isn't on all the pumps - I'll be sure to check this time.
Can't wait now, it's so close. :)
Ive got directions to the nearest shell steve,:)

Winner. I'll not worry about that any more then. Is it ~20 miles each way? No point me going if it is, I'll have used it up before I get back. ;)
I think its that 1 ark mentioned in koblenz, 20 minute drive, be a good excuse to let the car cool down.
So many steep hills and switchbacks on the road to Koblenz that you won't cool down much...
We'll be there - I'll PM you my mobile number so we're easy to find. :)
Thanks man. Then I can show you one of the best restaurants in the area called "Christa's Kleeblatt".
Anywhere in the area to get new tyres if needed?
Anywhere in the area to get new tyres if needed?
I would be astounded if there wasn't, apart from all the main dealers that live near the 'Ring (kudos I guess) there are no end of other garages etc. Plus that area has a fairly decent population number dotted about in all the villages & larger towns, they gotta get tyres somewhere. This is the sort of stuff I'd ask our hosts about TBH, I'm sure they would help. :)
True Torque Engineering is a very good place, only a few minutes from the track.
We had dinner with Marc Ludemann and his wife on one of my visits, very nice people who are very enthusiastic about sportscars.
They have worked on many Supras in the past, along with other japanese cars.

If you are looking for tyres I am sure these guys can source and fit them.

Amazingly, despite there being literally dozens of garages near the ring, I don't think there is a tyre-shop. First time I went there, one guy ripped a hole in his side-wall (not on the ring, it was just his lame-ass driving in the car park  ) He spent the next day touring the local garages for a replacement but wound up driving home on someone elses track tyres.
As said ... I will come to the Ring on 25th. What time will you guys be there in the morning (I don't want to come to early :d )

25th = Friday, track opens to the public at 14:15, so I'll be there & waiting to go on at about 14:00. ;)
Mine is a RSP (blueish) Supra with the Lexus multispoke wheels and TRD spoiler.

cheers Chris,
That sounds odd. My tyres have done 3000 miles and look about half worn. Will see how we go...

The track itself is pretty kind to tyres to be honest. However it's 1,000 mile round trip for me, excluding laps. I would think you'll be fine.
Agreed - unless your geometry is screwed, you'll be fine on tyres that age.
Ok Steve ... I'll be there around 1400 too ... see you there ...
Someone noticed, that this is in the weekend of the 27th?
http://dtm.com/rennen.php?lang=en&rennen=2008-07-27&
The question is if the old circuit is in use as a parkingplace on that date?
Edit. Just checked. There can be driven on the old circuit.

lol, check waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in this thread when I was booking accomodation mate - I had fun finding somewhere because of the DTM. Don't worry, the North Loop is definitely open!!
It's cool lapping when there is an event on the GP track as you sometimes get glimpses of it, but also there is a stadium section that overlooks the track we'll be on, and the Supras seem to get a few admiring glances.
I will be there too.
Who else is coming? Would be nice to meet you guys there and see some faces behind those name tags and avatars :)

That is the problem if you do not read the whole topic.:d:d
By the way. I will be there at the 27th. Just search for this car:

First you hear it than you see it.:eyebrows:

Toyota Starlet?

Hey Kim, looked in your garage and it says Audi S6. Have you got a Supra yet, or driving the Audi?
Excellent Rolly - not sure I'd like to lap in that though, isn't it a bit lively? :D
Mine looks like this (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=157231). I'd be surprised if there is another Supra that colour at the 'Ring at the same time as us.

There is one in almost the same color and the same wheels. Driven from a friend of mine of the german forum and also employer of Toyota Germany.

Doh. That'll teach me :D
:rlol::rlol:
In case anyone else fancies grabbing a couple of last minute pre-trip bargains, I just nipped into Lidl near me to get some high-vis vests for £1.99 (apparently French law changed recently to include these as mandatory and thus are stopping a few cars heer & there to check they've got them) - anyway they're useful if you end up stood on/by the track for some reason - and also a tyre pressure gauge for £1.99.
Sorted. :)
just checked the weatherforecast of the region ... we should be happy.
They announce nice weather from 23rd July on for the rest of the week. :)
The Ring can be weather-tricky, but the temperature should be around 25 degrees for the second half of the week.
Let's go :D:D:D
Ok, the car`s ready, just need to sort myself out now,:D
Off into town to get some last minute things :)
I think I'm ready. Nearly. lol
BTW - radios should be on channel 5, sub channel 05 please. :)

Did I imagine a PM from you a few days ago? I have been crazy busy with work & organising my car and SupraPod/Llandow recently, but thought I remembered something about your brother & his MR2??
Now I check my inbox I've either deleted it or imagined it.
Have a safe trip down guys ... and pay attention to the cops, especially on Belgian main roads :Pling: :d

Right I'm not planning on checking the forum again between now and after the trip. See you all in Dover if not before!
P.S. Look forward to meeting those of you already 'on the continent'. :)
Picking Bro up from Bristol at 8am tomorrow and driving down to Margate in the afternoon (cheap travelodge). Will aim to get to Dover at 5am Thursday :) see you all there (somewhere)
I'm so happy I'm driving from Berkshire rather then Sommerset this year. Those extra 2 hours sleep will be nice. :)
Btw, I never did see if Robbie was comming this year or not. Anyone know for sure?
Setting off soon for a short sleep an hour from the port, then hopefully meeting up with the bulk of the group in Ashford at 04:30
Should be good... after all this planning it will be nice when we finally set off :)
Good luck you lot, and make sure you all come back in one piece :)
Getting a few texts from Jaymdee who is there for his first time,
his first text on geting to the ring was "Holy Crap. This looks well scary. Lots of tricked up cars & bikes"
Just found this brill little site that takes a webcam pic every minute at the start, see
:http://www.8200rpm.com/webcam/
Not seen the lads yet, but lots of smart stuff...
Jealous....:(
I have the first pics of the Ring (after having been there yesterday) :D
2 of those cars found the armco on Saturday......
I eventually got back at 4:30am (work is proving painful) this morn with my 'remote charging' system. Even side lights proved to be an excessive current draw for any serious progress (35 miles before systems began to shut down) which made for an interesting drive. Not prepared to publish how we actually did it, but I had some very 'close' friends.....
Thanks to everyone that helped me out and good to meet you all. Have a safe trip back tomorrow.
Martin
Just got home. Absolutely knackered. Will post a few little pics tomorrrow. Prepare for a load of high quality pics from Henk!!
A superb 5 days trip. Many thanks to SteveR for organising it so well and all those who attended for a great time :)
Good to meet you Martin - glad you got back OK in the end :D
Pics are uploading now, the albums are finished but the full size ones take longer, 2/4 done, be finished by tonight!
Will post a full listing of the albums and file shares in Multi-Media later on.
Definitely second that John, SteveR did an amazing job, best tour guide I know!!!
Excellent trip, thanks to all for making it so entertaining.
I hope you guys are ready for the pics because I expect the forum to go NUTZ when you see them..... :)
Really pleased you guys had a great time over there...
Looking forward to the pics & stories :)
Glad you're back safe (sounds a bit grandad'ish that) but you know what I mean !

Too tired to post last night,
What a trip, from start to finish everything was brill, big thanks to steve for organising stuff.
Must say the ring taxi with sabine was amazing and i have some video`s to post up.
I'm still too tired to post anything meaningful. Just a quick MANY thanks to everyone on the trip for making it anotehr sucess, and especially for helping me with my cars little strops!
Just wanted to add a big thankyou to Steve (and Kate) for organising the best trip ever. Glad everyone got home in one piece and look forward to the next one.

Can only reiterate everyone's sentiments - a fabulous time was had by all. Cheers Steve.
See you all at the track day in October.
Andy
Glad it all turned out good in the end, you sounded so p*ssed off on the phone Saturday Ste :( I bet you were relieved you got some laps in the end. What was the problem in the end?

There was a slight vacuum/boost leak to the fuel pressure regulator, so that wouldn't have been seeing the true intake manifold pressure - fixing that helped a lot. But we also think there is a lean spot in the map around 2,800rpm, causing very lean running and when you're accelerating at <50% throttle, a scary hesitation. It's just as the car starts to make boost.
I went out for a road test session with Si watching the boost gauge & AFR, and he reckoned it wasn't going to cause me any issues if I lapped, so after that I did. I can't say enough thanks to especially Si but to everyone on the trip for helping me throughout almost the entire trip!
Ryan called me when I ws out there, but we weren't sure what it was then (I guess 2 contributing factors is harder to diagnose than 1), so I'll speak to him again now I'm back to get a quick check/tweak done. :)
Thanks for the invite guys, although i expect to have my radio confiscated next time! lol
btw i have put my pix on my facebook http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=575668641
It was cool meeting some of you. Steve only on phone:D but Simon as he is.
To both of you: You made me a promise that we meet again in Spetember the 14th at the ITF. Hope to see you there.:)
The Trip Report is overdue so here goes...
Meeting at Dover at 5am to queue to board a ferry is never pretty, but that Thursday morning spirits were high and as the sun comes up you quickly forget you should still be in bed.

90 mins later we're in Dunkerque and unloading our cars. After regrouping we were on our way; 275 miles to the famous Nurburgring. A steady cruise across Europe with a few stops along the way for breaks, fuel and lunch we arrived about 6 hours later and a few hours before the track opened to the public that evening. We nipped to the track but nothing worthy of much attention was going round so we retired to B&B to chill & unpack. That evening we returned and most people bagged a lap or two; I didn't as my AFRs started playing up on the way over when we were just 4 miles from the track resulting in me limping the last hundred metres. :( I didn't want to risk damaging the engine/crashing due to watching the gauge instead of the track, so skipped that session.
That night we dined, oh yes! Steak on a hot stone. Sounds odd, but is awesome. A slab of superheated granite(?) is brought out on a ceramic tray with a side area full of fries, and the finest piece of raw cow is sizzling away on top, so you can cook/not cook it to your liking! Man it is GOOD. We went back on the final night! :D
Friday the track was closed until after lunch so we had a lay-in till as late as breakfast could possibly be. Between brekky & track opening I think some people went sight-seeing but others helped poke my Supra with sticks to see what might be wrong. Memory might be failing me but ultimately I don't think we got anywhere that day - although many theories were discussed and investigated - but as the track was opening I didn't want my issues to affect anyone else's enjoyment & track action, we all headed that way. With 9 cars and 14 people present I forget who lapped with who and what-not but many smiles were present, mostly nervous ones simply glad they had made it back from each 13.2 mile stint with their car (& wallet!) still in one piece. ;) I think Friday was when I guessed my problem was an O2 sensor and it was indeed looking likely until Ryan.G phones me to say it couldn't be, as it's not plumbed into my MoTeC ECU. Doh! Anyway I got off the phone with a new list of potential causes, so thanks to Ryan for the call.
Friday night we ate in a popular place in the main town called Blau Ecke, it was ok – nice surroundings but a little pricey for what we got – ‘nuff said.
Saturday and Sunday both saw the track open to the public all day (8am->7:30pm), the best time to lap on such days is usually 8am; only the hardcore few true enthusasts are there, and the track is quiet as a result. There is the odd tourist, pootling along in their own little world at 60mph who you tend to surprise as you can approach at more than twice that, but they usually have a funny little panic and get out of the way with no harm done except to any times that you wouldn't have been taking anyway. :innocent: Typically at the weekend the track gets uber busy from about 11am~lunchtime and the numpties decend so spectating/wallet protection becomes a more useful activity and most people took a break away from the track at that point.
My car still wasn't track-able on the Saturday morning but all credit to everyone, in the afternoon we decended like vultures on my engine bay looking for the root of the problem, Ryan's list in hand and a few more theories to boot. Everyone was determined to get me on the track and I am deeply indebted to you all. :grouphug: Si found a few minor boost/vacuum leaks, but fixing the one to the fuel pressure regulator seemed to imrove things significantly but not entirely but after a comprehensive test-drive, me mostly watching the road, Bignum mostly watching my gauges, I got a thumbs up for hitting the track. Simon: :urock: :D
Saturday afternoon the weather wasn't looking clever, but I needed to know if my car was going to be ok to track the next day, so bignum jumped in the passenger seat and we went round in my car, on low boost (0.9bar max). All seemed well; we even had smoe very cool thunder & lightning accompanying us as we went round (Henk & Jaymdee followed me in 'slow' mode but I was so chuffed my car seemed to be working I kept losing them, sorry chaps!). I set off on a second lap again with Bignum watching my gauges but on full boost this time (1.4bar max).... and before I'd got to the end of the S/F straight, it started to rain. Although the track was dry as we got away from the rain, I knew we'd end up driving back into it and between us we'd decided it was probably going to be pretty wet on our return to the car park. It was!

A motorcyclist tapped on the window as we both set out on this lap, to tell me "watch the skies, it might rain!"
Saturday night we ate Italian, the food was ok but to be blunt the service wasn't. The best bit was when we all thought we had LARGE beers at 1 litre, but Bignum found there was a MUCH LARGER 3 litre (nearly 6 pints!) on the menu:

Sunday morning we were all track-ready! :ecstatic:
8am came, the track opened and within a few minutes I think everyone was out lapping. We drove through early morning fog in parts and at the risk of sounding a bit soft it honestly was almost magical. At some point I jumped in Gavin’s SAAB 9000 and pointed out the handful of places where the track can appear misleading but with a little knowledge he could push on a bit more. Despite my fears about it being FWD it was a great lap! Henk had followed us through most of it but right at the end of the lap suddenly dropped back. We thought it he had issues getting past a late flurry of traffic, but as he returned to the car park a wheel nut fell off and 3 more were loose!
After the car was checked over for any damage (none other than cosmetic to the caliper) all the wheels were then fully secured to the car the Henkmobile was back up and running, but with his current lap ticket all used up, Henk decided picture-taking would be his forte for the rest of the trip, just in case. After sorting Henk's out, I think we all checked our nuts before taking to the track again. ;)
Sunday was hot, I had to drop 6psi from my tyres to keep them at ideal levels; a previous lap was quite.... squirmy. In the afternoon 6 of our group went out in 2 sucessive Ring taxi laps with Sabine - Bridge to Gantry times of ~8:40, and some of that was sideways! Bignum was in the first of our group's taxi outings and then followed the second run (once he'd caught her!):

My car must have decided everyone was having too much fun and developed a crunching noise when shifting weight, so that afternoon and with the help of the B&B's garage & pit we all investgated that for a couple of hours... but found nothing. I decided the car had caused everyone enough greif and as a result I was going to ignore the noise and do a few more laps on the Monday. Best quote of the day was Henk, trying to help. Strolling over to my car he bends down to take a look, promptly bashing his head on my alloys:
Move aside you lot, I mean... how hard can it OWW!!!!
:rlol: Thanks for the much needed comic relief mate! :D
I think Sunday was when 4packet's car developed alternator issues, so there were 2 sets of us hitting our cars with hammers. I was also supposed to meet up with Rolly, and the previous day I breifly met luxluc who tried to help me find an O2 sensor - I'm sorry I let you down guys and everyone else who would have been looking for me; I truely would have been there & more 'with it' if I wasn't so distracted by ongoing issues! Sincere apologies!
We bumped into George (aka 'Kermit' due to his Supra's colour) a few times throughout our trip, and as always, he was good enough to give passenger rides those that wanted to take them. As I missed out last year I jumped at the chance this time - many thanks George, you're a real gent!

Sunday night we had Chinese, and it was good!
Monday came. Breakfast was eaten by those who could be bothered to get up, others lay in to catch up on sleep/shrug off the previous night's beers; the track wasn't open 'till 5:15 that evening anyway. Gavin headed out for some sight-seeing and quickly rang me to say:
"You need to come to the track. Masarati MC12, Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, number 9 of 25 carbon fibre Zonda F, and a purple carbon fibre Keoneneononeonenezegg. Need I say more?"
Moments later we were there. sums it up, see for yourself:

Carlsberg don't do track days....
Monday evening was the last chance to bag a few laps before we'd have to head home the next day. Bignum's turn for car noises. A suspected flywheel issue and a wise choice to sit the evening out rather than risk a breakdown. :( Remaining lap tickets sold -
James could sell sand to the Arabs
:D It was the least I could do to take Jo, Paul and finally Bignum out for a lap each in mine, finishing off my tickets in th process Andy kindly video'd one of my laps (and a previous half lap when he caught me up)... erm from the sidelines of course. :innocent:
Henk took yet more awesome pictures that evening; my fave is now my first proper avatar after 3 years on this forum as a fish. :)

Monday night, many more steaks on hot stones and many, many more beers. It had been an eventful and not exactly smooth-running trip, but a hopefully fun one for all who went and most importantly, incident-free! I breathed a HUGE organiser's 'phew' of relief and bought a crate of beer to share out between us to say well done and many thanks to everyone who went for not only their help during the trip but for making it a great success. Happy days. :)
Tuesday we had fun changing Joe's Yaris' gearbox oil then we all drove back across Europe and got on the ferry home.

Gah! Reading my own trip report makes me want to go back. Dammit!!!
Good report, although it is hard to do justice to the true greatness of the trip :D
It wouldn't have gone so well without such dedicated organisation, and I think it was an example of how a trip like that should be run.
I can't believe I was so cautious about going - there are some things you just have to do, and if it involves overtaking roll-caged Porsches in an 11 year old Saab, all the better :)
Brilliant write up steve, thats how it was,:D
Great report Steve, thanks for taking the time.
Sounds like the trip of a lifetime.
Great report Steve, thanks for taking the time.
Cheers. :) I was dreading writing it but I'm pretty happy with the result and it's always nice to have something to look back on. Plus with my ongoing issues and I can't lap gloomy face, although I tried not to be I certainly felt like a burden to everyone on the trip so I had to put my thanks up in writing! We had a great group of people on the trip, and they make it worthwhile as much as the track. I'm only sorry I couldn't fulfil my promises of going out with people as passengers/taking people out in my car as much as I'd hope too.
Sounds like the trip of a lifetime.Nah, we did it last year (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showpost.php?p=1500872&postcount=233) too :D ;)
I just watched Simon and his brother chasing the ring taxi! Great stuff. Reading Steve's report and watching that... all I can say is I'm really regretting not going:( Oh well.
I'm really glad everyone made it back ok though considering how new all the kit going out was, new cars, single turbos suspension setups etc etc.:)

We kept our eyes open for you turning up out of the blue whilst we waited to board mate - only admitting that you really weren't coming after we'd set sail. :( Did you get to TOTB instead?

TOTB was a no no for me too. I'd hoped to get a couple of days away but to no avail.

Have you sorted out the fuel pressure issue yet?

Shame :( I did look for you in the TOTB pics posted on here but thought it was odd you weren't showing up in any.
Have you sorted out the fuel pressure issue yet?
Yeah I think that wasn't helping but isn't the main issue. I'll get the map checked again with Ryan, I think it's just a slight lean spot at certain revs and certain throttle, I can't think what else it could be. I've got some crunchy noise (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=157882) still to track down & resolve, that's my main current issue...
simon... you have shrunk.. you look like an infant clutching a pint glass!
That beer has "trouble" written all over it!!!
glad you all had a good trip.. I would like to do it one day, but it does put the fear of god in me!!

It's an old clubman, stripped out and now with a Honda engine, supercharged I think. Check it out here: www.ringmini.de
I have finally written my trip report, and it is linked here (http://www.sevenman.f2s.com/blog/?p=127)
It is a rather long report, but I felt the trip was so good it was worth expanding on :)

If anybody wants access to all our pics, then they are in our Flickr album, organised by a set for each day.
Select a day, select a picture, then if you want a high-res version, click on the "all sizes" option, and you have a range of options up to full 10MP.
Flickr collection for Ring trip (http://www.flickr.com/photos/trubble_pics/collections/72157606677137395/).
It also contains sets for stuff we did in France after we left the Ring.
Found some very long boring videos, filmed when we were there - watched them all the way through and spotted Joe in the Yaris quite a lot of times I think, and me once, briefly.
I think but I'm not 100% that Joe is featured at 1:24, 3:33 and 5:36, but I might be wrong

And in this video I think Joe shows up again at 5:23 (or is that a Civic??), and I go past at 8:03.

In other news, I'm surprised that Brit in the baby blue Lambo blew his engine, as he's not going fast or revving high in any of these clips I spotted him. :search:
