View Full Version : Complete New Install - What To Do With Stock Tweeters
OK guys,
Right now I have an Alpine CDA9855R head unit, Infinity Kappa 652.71 17cm coaxials in the front doors on mdf brackets and a pair of Alpine SPS-17C2's in the rear.
These four speakers are currently wired up to the stock wiring running of the headunit's internal amp at something like 18w rms per channel.
Yesterday I installed a Pioneer GM3300T amplifier (2x60w rms) to power the front speakers and an Alpine SWD-2000 active sub in the boot.
Question:
My plan was to run my decent OFC cable from my Pioneer amp to the front speakers (the Infinitys). However, this will then omit the stock tweeters completely once I disconnect the speaker wire from the head unit.
Shall I just do this and end up not using the tweeters or shall I perhaps leave the tweeters powered off the head unit? If I do that I will have to playaround with the fader and amplifier gain to get the volumes right.
What's the best option?
Many thanks
Dan

I have left my stock dash tweeters wired in off the HU, just adds a little more treble up front, you cant really hear them but worth leaving them in. All my other speakers are amped up, and I did not need to adjust any levels for the stock tweeters.
I would just leave them in and then add new door speakers with tweeters.
The only fiddly bit as I was discussing with someone yesterday is running decent speaker cable through the door grommits, can be a real pain, my advice is use a bit of wire coat hanger.
Pop the grommits out on both door and body side, and make a small hole in the rubber sleave door side, like half way up and work the coat hanger up and along the rubber sleave from the body side into the door and through the hole you made.
Can be very annoying and takes ages but worth it in the end.
Disconnect them. Otherwise fitting decent speakers is like buying a new HD tv and then sticking a 14inch portable right in front of it. Speakers are designed to sound right on their own.

Thats exactly what sextons did to mine when they fitted new infinity speakers to the front.

whats the best way to do this, just disconnect the relevant wire on the iso connector?

How fiddley was it? Also how long did it take, I'm thinking of doing it in the near future :innocent:

ah god i lost track of time:) was not much space at all so was hard to thread it through in the end i slid a longish bit of wire through and taped the cable to the end and pulled it through from the interior with pliers

anyone?
OK all finished - sounds great, plenty of thump and crystal clear sound!!
Stock tweeters are disconnected.
Cheers chaps.
can you do somepics please
I installed components in the front and full range in the back the other day sounds great, feel the need for a sub now tho :)
I went for the Alpine SWD-2000. Very neat, tidy, not intrusive and sounds great with the rest of my install.

whats the connections on these?, how easy are they to set up
don't you guys switch the rear speakers off for "proper" sound staging?

I don't.

Just incase anyone searches this in the future. Instead of using a coat hanger to feed through the door grommets, I used a stiff, but slightly flexible cable. I went for some 4mm single Earth cable. The passengers side was a little tricky as it was the first one I done, but the driver's side literally went straight through. It must have taken me all of 30 seconds. Once through I stripped the cable back and created a loop with the strands. I then used the cores in the speaker cable to loop through the Earth cable and taped it up. This way I was able to slowly pull the cable through without having to worry about it falling off.
