View Full Version : I've been called up for jury service
And much as I would love to do it (honestly) I'm very reluctant as I run my own business, which would undoubtedly suffer if I wasn't there for any period of time ie staff would not be paid, nor would any suppliers, nor would we even sell anything - not good if it lasts for weeks/months!!!
Is this a good enough reason to be excused? Deferral isn't an option, as the situation won't change as long as I run the business as it is.
Good luck getting out of it.
I was called up about 3 years ago (not sure many people would want a 21 year old lad on their jury!). I was living in Southampton but still on the electoral register at my parents house up north -I changed my electoral register address as a result and they tried to transfer it to Winchester CC, but they wrote to me saying they didn't want me :d
I'd love to do Jury service but I have never been asked.....
Seems great, time off work, expenses paid and you get to laugh at all the scumbags...LOL!

In the words of Homer Simpson, just say you're prejudiced against everything. Should get you off :D
This is what you do...
A few days before your due in go to the docs with an illness that cant br proved Ie bad back or such like get signed off phone them up drop the docs note in problem solved. I also think that maybe against the law.
I loved it when i wasnt working for myself full pay start at 10 home by 4.
I was 18 when i did Jury service was on a murder trial for 10 weeks hated every minute of it. I am 28 now. I tried everything to get out but had no luck.
TBH I don't think there are any decent excuses to get out of it really, its part of being a citizen, its your duty for your country no matter if you're a millionaire of a pauper!

I agree and I DO want to do it - but my employees and suppliers won't be happy if it means they don't get paid!
How would you like it if you didn't get your wages cos your boss had been called up?
I don't agree about the Gypsies, but if they were wearing Burberry or any football colours apart from boro - now that's another matter! :)
Yeah I know.. I'm sure you're not the first to be in that situation and they can make arrangements
LOL I was just after a reaction from the other thread ;)
About 10 years ago I was called up for jury service, but as I was the sole member of my department, the MD/owner of the company that I was working for wrote back to HMCS stating I was a key member of his staff (the company would suffer financially etc) and I couldn't be released.
That worked, even though I would've liked to have had a go though. Then again, the owner of that particular company was a complete toss pot anyway!

They usually don't like to let people go. If you are ill they will just change the call up date.
They could argue that you could make arrangements to pay your suppliers/bills (its not like you are in court 24/7). Then again they might allow people off for this reason (you'll be lucky if they do).
As for Court being exciting.... it really, really isn't. I once fell asleep and was woken up by a rather upset judge.

Write to them, explain the situation honestly and they should let you off. I was in the same situation. Worked for me.:)

I think?? LOL
Had to do it once for 12 weeks, was loving it, getting paid to do not a lot, some days would go in and sit there reading magazines and drinking tea. Guy was found guilty of 2 counts of murder, life for him. Done my bit.
