Headgasket gone :(

Well I thought I'd be going to see Ryan today to get my Supe mapped, end up finding out my headgasket is foobar'd :(. White gunk in the oil cap & varying water temps were the first signs. Ryan did a sniffer test on the coolant which confirmed it. I also noticed a bit coolant around the spark plugs everytime I checked the coilpacks which fits in with it all.

 

First my turbo, now this, there's no proof either of these are down to the old map, we'll have a better view of the damage done once the head is off, I'm just hoping the head itself & pistons haven't been damaged with the whatever killed my turbo (EGTs???).

 

On the plus side I think it's going to put to rest the annoying startup problem I've been experiencing, chuffing out loads of white smoke (which is where the HG is prolly leaking coolant into the cylinder). Also Motoscope have done an amazing install on the water injection & Do-Luck tension set.

 

It can sometimes be very taxing modifying these cars, I know come summer all will be forgotten, but in these cold dark winter months when you've not drove the car in anger for ages, it's hard to keep motivated.

 

Grumble over :D (maybe it's this man flu thats getting me down)

Curious, I also found a lil bit of white gunk on my oil cap when my oil light kepted flashing on and off. Had a fresh oil change 3 weeks prior and it had all gone. :/ What's the bet it will be a load of gunk in the bottom of the sump!

 

Well judging from your original post before you edited it you should know the answer seeing as you describe yourself as a Supra specialist. Are you?

Cheers guys,

 

My block is studded, so to remove the head I think the studs need to come out otherwise there's not enough room to lift it off. Going to have it fully checked over while it's off prolly also do valve stem oil seals too.

 

I think theres a point when modifying which when you pass there is no turning back, I know once sorted it'll be amazing, just gotta keep chipping away

Ah yes that I maybe, spent a fair time on them before with my mate this year but the car I'm talking bout is me go-kart vw polo and I have absoloutly no idea on these older engines :(

Totally agree, untill you run out of money then you stop for a while.

You do get toa point when you can hammer 10 bells of shit out of the car without it breaking but it sure takes some heart ache to get there.

But, white condensation gunk in the oil is condensation gunk no matter how old the engine.

 

If the gunk clears after a decent run it's condensation, which needs to be burnt off via getting the engine nice and hot for a good 30+ mins. If the gunk doesn't go after this you more than likely have a BHG.

Lol, I remember when I sold my old MR2 I swore I would never get back in that position, I bought myself a nice stock Supra & all was well, until that damn modifying bug took hold again.

 

Do you think when we're 80 we'll all be driving round in modified OAP mobiles :D, I think she said she was going single (battery) :D

I bought myself a nice stock Supra & all was well, until that damn modifying bug took hold again.

 

It's always the same mate, tried it myself - and I suspect a lot of us on here have. I bought a bonestock TT as my 'to and from work' car, only took me a couple of weeks to buy the FCD :D

 

I figure that I'm a long time dead, and modifying cars is my passion....so why not ;)

Sorry to hear about that.. is it a stock gasket?

 

You must have spent a fortune in northallerton by now, they should have a red carpet for you, or a red phone on reception at any rate!

 

I bought my car already done; one look at the spec sheet, and an appointment with a calculator and the choice was clear!

 

hope it's not a massive job bud.

Sorry to hear this, know exactly how you feel, I purchased a stock TT6 a few weeks ago as a daily driver while the single cars engine is being built and promised myself I would not mod it at all, I am in fact loving the way the stock car drives and handles, puts my 19" wheels handling to shame :)

 

Hope you get your on the road again soon ;)

Stock thickness, Cometic or something like that.

 

I tried that with my old MR2 and ended up fixing other peoples problems, decided a fresh slate on the Supe was the best way :O

Must admit i was very nervous about looking at this car 3 weeks ago as i knew that 1100c+ EGT's that it had been through on the DT map would do more damage just hope the blocks not cracked with the extreme heat cycle it used to have.

Sounds like it may have had the same map as mine, I was seeing 1000c EGT's before it went pop
