The Toyota supra what is it? Some say it’s a sports car, some say it’s a hot hatch it’s been said its Toyota’s supercar much like Hondas NSX. But the performance may tell us what it is.

 

The acceleration was very vivid - the Twin-turbo supra gives 0-60 in 5.0 secs from a 326 bhp twin-turbo straight 6 engine. The normally aspirated (non turbo) version gives 220bhp from a 3.0 litre straight 6 and gets to 60 in about the same time as a lexus GS300 (7.5 secs) because it's the same engine.

 

The handling was very good and my comment would be that it really allows you to drive far too fast on twisty country roads. Most of the time, the limit is how brave (or stupid) you are rather than the handling of the car. It's perfectly possible to be going 80 or 100 mph on a 'B' road but the question is: would you want to?

 

The brakes are VERY good and pull the car down from 100mph in a very short distance. The brakes are so good that you run the risk of

catching other road users out though.

 

 

Only one version of this mid-range, 2+2 sportscar was officially available in Britain - the 3.0-litre twin-turbo. It produced 326bhp, had rear wheel drive and commonly came as a four-speed automatic, although six-speed manual was available. Top speed was an impressive 160mph. Proper sports styling, and over-large and unsubtle rear spoiler meant it there was plenty of show to complement the go. But the humble Japanese badge was a problem and despite combining performance and looks, the Supra was never given its due as the proper performance car it certainly is, which is why it was dropped from the UK line-up after only three years. The firm, harsh ride and limited luggage space make the Supra a specialised used buy, especially as many grey used imports have come to the UK. But British spec was luxurious, with leather trim and plenty of equipment, and you'll pay very little for them. You can tell UK versions apart from the plethora of grey imports by the additional central bonnet vent and headlight washers. Parts are much cheaper than almost any other sports cars you could think of. The Supra is a performance bargain, unfairly cast aside as a 'wannabe'. Besides the 280-326bhp Japanese market RZ version there's also a lower powered SZ version with 225bhp, which usually does without the rear spoiler.

Rear seats useless for all but small children and hand luggage

 

So what is it to be is it a supercar or a sports car ??????

Lets remeber this was the era of the 348 etc. It WAS a Supercar back then - of course it is not compared to a lot of todays supercars, but then neither are a lot of other cars that were supercars 15 years ago.

 

I agree. Supercar in it's day. Back in 1987, the Sierra Cosworth was a supercar with 210 bhp, 0-60 in 6.2 and top end of 145!

I still don't reckon it was ever a Supercar. As Clarkson (I think) once said "It's a super car but it's not a supercar".

 

It's not actually a very well defined car. It's too big and heavy to be a truly thrashable sports car. Neither is it comfy, luxurious and 'flash' enough to be a GT in the traditional sense.

 

Maybe it's down to the Japanese market it was made primarily for. They like their quirky and maybe there was a demand or hole in the market for a fast car without a clear role.
