has anyone got these installed are these any gd or could i get better for about the same money?
i havnt heard a bad word about focal as well wheres the best place for these?
In my opinion you cant go wrong with Alpine, but a lot of people will recommend the Focals.
Focals are better but they are a good bit more expensive.
A year or so back i looked into speakers and found out that the Alpine type-r's are superb. The other ones (type-s i think) are nowhere near as good as they should be for the value.
However, i was on a bit of a budget recently and wanted to get everything done in the 1 go so i had to be a bit frugel with the speaker cash. I ended up going for Vibe Slick 60's. They can handle 180W RMS and they are absolutely AMAZING. I haven't even fitted the proper amp on them yet so i am using a cheap one.
For the money they are absolutely superb!
I recommend the Vibe 60's coz i have them and i know they are good but i did do a lot of research on budget speakers and the Type-R's came out on top for me at the time.

hmm its getting harder to chose by the minute theres sooo much choice :)
If you were local i would have let you had a listen but honestly.... they are scary loud and they keep the sound quality allllllllll the way up.
Just finished the install the other night and took one of the guys i work with out in it last night. You should have seen his face lol.
My other mate reckons i will be deaf in a fortnight.

:) whats the bass like on these? did you install these front and back? was it hard to route the wires through
Why not go for the alpine type x f1 series these are awesome
I've turned the bass off as i have 2 12" subs but i'll turn off the crossover tonight and see how they perform and get back to you.
The rears were extremely easy to fit. They screwed straight into the locations that are there and the wiring simply went under the back seats (piece of piss to take out) to my amp. If you are wiring them to the stereo up front just use the speaker wire thats there.
The fronts i found were going to be very difficult so i took out the stereo, found the speaker wires for the corresponding speakers, spliced into them and routed the wire to the rear of the car. Again, very easy to do if you are wiring to your headunit. The speakers won't fit in the standard locations though. Brackets are required.

oh and just to add I have a brand new set of the f1 series SPX-177R retail @ £380 components. Yours for £160 delivered :)
shameless plug I know :innocent:

i was planning on putting the amp under the passenger seat but dunno if i can ill havr to see, i would have thought the standard speaker cable isnt up to scratch so id prbs be running new cable to the head unit and from the amp du think this will be easy enough, im guessin ill b on all day at least :)

Running the cable from the amp to the headunit location isn't a problem. The rear speakers aren't an issue at all as you can get access to them easily. THe trouble is trying to feed speaker wire through the door grommet.
You would be surprised how good the std speaker wire is. People use overkill all the time to sell products. For example, i have 0 gauge wire for my +12 line. Its over half an inch thick and yet i have a 50" tv running off of 3 core wire where the +12 is around 1mm thick.
Over the length you require i would use the speaker wire you get with the speakers for the rears and then use some good speaker wire from th amp to the headunit location and splice into the std speaker wire for the fronts.
Also, those type-r's are new ones. Even better than the ones i was looking at. I would definitely go for them for the front and go for coaxials for the rear. Components in the rear is total overkill. Some decent tweeters in the font will be plenty.
Go for Apline Type-R's in the front and Slick 60's in the rear. They will be good for bass and mid. The type-r's will take a bit more oomph for the front where its most important.

Yes good point, but the TV wont pull many amps and the power flow is constant, running any heavy duty ICE will require 0 gauge power cable as powerfull amps pull some serious ampage, I have seen many installs done with non suitable wiring and have seen a lot of them go up in smoke, both power and speaker cable.
My opinion is always go bigger than you really need, cuts out the chance of cable failure and possible resulting fire.
Back to speakers, the Alpine Type R are very good value for money, they have good bass response and can handle some good power figures. All depends on 2 things a) budget and b) requirement, do you want a system to sounds amazingly clear and tight sounding, or do you just want a system to blow your ear drums out.
I have TypeR components in mine. Great value for money.
A decent, solid MDF mounting will do wonders for the sound.

I had 6mm 6 strand cable from my work in my last install. Got it from my work. Rated up to 400A and yet i was told it was a fire risk just so they could sell me 0 gauge. Solid core wire is MUCH better than multi strand and yet the guy wouldn't listen. Its all a sales pitch to me.
0 gauge can handle up to 200A iirc. I have a 2000w amp that has 2 20amp fuses so thats 40 max. My 2nd amp has 1 20amp fuse and my PC has a maximum draw of 20amps. Thats 80A, 200A cable is overkill but i'm happy as it does the job and looks nice. Because i am running subs i have a powercap to keep the draw of current even so there are no spikes.
Yes i agree, its always better to be over than under. You have to remember safety factors though. When something is being sold as capable of "x" its always tested to 2 times "x" (for consumer goods). I reckon you could probably put 500A through that cable before it would think about melting.
Anyway, i was meaning the speaker wire, i just gave the power cable as an example. Speaker wire is speaker wire really (unless you have silly money). The RCA's are more important.

Muted the sub and turned off the filter on the amp. VERY VERY loud. The bass is loud and punchy. I turned my stereo almost all the way up and they handled it no problem at all (600w amp). I was going deaf so i decided to turn them back down.
I actually only have 3 of the speakers installed at the moment as i am doing 1 door at a time. First one is done, have the 2nd one to do. Think i may have popped the kenwood speaker thats in there lol. It really didn't like being turned up loud so i had to move the sound to the rear to check it out then to the front.
I would definitely go for something with tweeters, i am using aftermarket ones for the front.
Alpine Type-R's and slick 60's will be sweet as a nut for very little cash.

I have never bought in to the whole huge wire type thing. 8 gauge wire will show 0.014 ohms over 20 feet. This is longer than people would normally use in a car.
You can work out the power loss with P = (I^2)R Where I is the current and R is the resistance. So assuming 40 amps (you're 2 20amp fuses) which should blow at 40 amps you would see 22.4 watts of energy being lost. Not enough to melt 20 feet of wire.
Edit: The Type-R's are awesome bits of kit. The type S isnt quite as good but I have an old S type sub which will shame most other brands.

Im thinking of where to mout the tweeters as well either in the standard place but it will b alot of hassle to do and not the best position or the door would probably be best but i dont fancy cutting my door cards up, can you get pillar pods for these to fit into?
The ones i have screw onto the doorcards.
Does leave little holes for the screws and the wires but they won't be coming off anyway.
Scott =op
i know it would be best sound wise but i dont fancy damaging the door cards:( id like it so it could easily be removed and you wouldnt know it was there
picture plug hehe

i dont want my lovely standard interior damaged :p
Buy spare doorcards :p

i thought of this but would imagine they would be hard to get hold of a decent pair and pricey?
Nah buttons off one thats breaking.
The doorcards are generally in good condition unless the owner has had total disregard for their car.
The seats wear badly but doorcards generally don't
Scott =op
would the j spec ones be different from mine?
Not really sure. I wouldn't have thought so.
Scott =op
just cosmetic wise ie same colour, black leather on arm rest

anyone?
I dont know of any pods designed for tweeters. Perhaps you could get one with 52/60 mm holes and make up a braket/surround for the tweeter to make it fit. Could always try and find a 60mm tweeter?
anyone?
Hey P3te
I had the first linked component kit in my NA (So good I've just bought another to fit in my TT).
I actually fitted the woofer + tweeter and crossover into the rear speaker grills. It took a bit of work but it looked very neat and sounded ultra crisp and still bassy, the proximty of the tweeter to the woofer didn't cause any clarity issues IMHO. They didn't stick out either, had passengers in the rear and no issues of them getting knocked etc.
Then just go for some reasonable front speakers if I were you. This also means you've got 4 tweeters + 4 woofers in the car. Makes for a luuuvely sound.
Can get a photo up later if you want.

they are usually glued in as well, once the screws are removed u should be able to pry the speakers out with a flat blade screwdriver

thanks cut them out today and went at them old school, Glad to see sculpting the guns has paid off.
Also robbed your mounting Tweeter Idea for the rear, too lazy at the moment to install in the front with fabicating the bracket req
Cheers for the twetter Idea, should have speakers installed tomorrow, finshed running RCA cables/remote power cable and hooking up amp today/ running speaker cables for type R's from amp
Might just get new 10" Alpines for the front, for a straight forward replace of stock speakers
How do you remove the front door grill??? Tried but was afraid I would break it
