Since I have gone and spent stupid money on a 42" LCD tv that is bigger than my sofa, I figured I may as well spend a little more on a console.

So which is better? Why?

I am leaning towards PS3 purely for the new Gran Tourisma coming soon...

I will be getting a PS3 soon!

I am not well up on all the technical guff but it seems that Sony have a reliable formula and I would expect the range of games availalble to increase massively in the next year!

I was looking for a 360 about 3 months ago and bid on a few on e-bay but I'm glad I didn't win as the reliability issues have put me off. This problem is apparently sorted but I don't gamble on things that aren't reliable in the first place!

XBox 360 - Graphics every bit as good, sometimes better than PS3. Huuuuge games line up, loads of top titles, games around £10 cheaper than PS3, better online play system. Console itself cheaper than PS3.

Just venture into your local Game / HMV / Virgin / Whatever and notice how tiny the PS3 section is in comparison to the 360 section ;)

PS3...it's more than a games console.

Its the best £4£ Blue Ray player out there.

PS3 games and graphics will just get better and better.

I've got both so i guess i can offer an unbiased opinion. To be honest i prefer the 360 by a long way. Don't play on the PS3 much. Xbox live is a big winner for the 360 and being able to talk to your mates and have a laugh enhances the gaming experience. I've got them running on a 42" HD Plasma and graphics are about the same. The PS3's probably a tiny bit smoother but there's not many decent games compared to the 360. A lot of the games now are cross platform but you'll find they're £5 or £10 dearer on the PS3, it's a joke!... I suppose the PS3 has the benefit of having a bluray player but for £100 you can get the HD-DVD player for the 360 with 5 free HD movies!....

If i could only keep one, it'd be the 360. I'm praying that Gran Turismo 5 is really good and also the new metal gear solid otherwise i'll probably sell the PS3. Considering some of the games on the 360 (Project Gotham 4 & Forza 2) Sony are going to have to really pull something out of the bag!!

Apart from CoD4 all ports (multiformat games) have been much better on the 360 than PS3 so far. The PS3 is a pain to develop on. 360 has the better games by far at the moment, exclusives and multiformat.

I'd wait a year for a PS3 and get a 360 Elite for now.

HD / Blu Ray players crap will be an obsolete format war soon enough - high def movie downloads for the win :)
There's already a decent number available on XBox live and they're a damned sight cheaper than Blu Ray movies at a rip off £30 a pop.

Cheers,

Brian.

Have to agree, but I am with Harvard, I think more games will come...

I only play a few choice games, so cost is not a big deal.

I've seen several side by side comparisons now with the same game on both XBox and PS3... the Xbox looks slightly sharper, whereas the PS3 looks more smoothed. To me the xbox looks better, slightly, and there does seem to be a lot more good games available just for that format. The PS3 will have the new Grand Tourismo though! I'd be happy with either, but I want a Wii too :)

360 all the way, as pointed out, games line up and Live are the nuts. Had a go on my mates PS3 and much prefered the 360, Halo3, CoD4, Forza 2 and Gears of War and you are set for a few months in lol
Did not see much difference in graphics between the 2 consoles, the 360 games are now cheaper (CoD4 only £25 this week at Gamestation), much bigger line up than the PS3, but clear to see that the 360 is shifting more units this xmas than the PS3, think its only second to the Wii. Played that as well, good fun but did seem to be aimed more at the kids market in my opinion. Get a 360 and join the fun, online Gears of War with the guys on here, what a chuckle.

If you want it for playing games (which should be the main reason for buying a games console) then buy a 360. If you want something to look good & collect dust then buy a PS3 (that’s what mine is mainly doing at the moment).

Everyone keeps saying that loads of PS3 games will be coming out next year but the fact is the 360 already has hundreds of quality games! Live the now instead of living in hope that 2008 will be the year for the PS3. I personally think that Sony have made a massive balls up and are really going to struggle to catch the 360. They've already had to scrap the 60gig one and make a smaller & cheaper one because nobody was buying them  They’re also bringing out a slimline PS3 to hopefully increase sales. If you’ve got your heart set on a PS3 then now is definitely not the time to buy one.

Apart from Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and Final fantasy I can't see any advantage over a 360. Don't forget that the 360 has lots of awesome xbox only titles as well. Gears of war, Halo 3, Fable 2 etc... If games are cross platform then I buy them for the 360 because they're cheaper & i can play my friends on xbox live. Like i said earlier, if the new PS3 games aren't amazing then i'll be selling up, and they're really going to struggle to beat games like Gears of war, halo 3, Project Gotham 4, forza 2 etc.... Good luck Sony! I’ve got my fingers crossed! :D

I was wary of getting an xbox but I got one and 2 mates got a ps3...probably because the ps2 was so good.

One has sold his PS3 so he can play me and a couple of other mates online and my other mate is going to get one but keep the PS3.

Im sure the PS3 will win in graphics in the end but as for online play...I highly doubt it, Xbox live is so well thought out. I mean I can be playing forza2 and him call of duty but we can still chat. Also can see what your mates are playing so you may think ill have a game of that and then you can join there game too.

Also you got games like bomberman :D which you can play 8 player online :D

Im sure the PS3 will come good ..but not online and i have to say this is what people want when playing games...to play other humans not a computer. Nothing like a 16 player dog fight on ace combat :D

I bought an xbox 360 the premium one. I looked at the elite but decided against it as i doubt i will need the extra space. The premium also comes with HDMI now anyway.

It is good so far i need to get xbox live sorted once i have practiced on Forza first :d
Sony's online system is poor in comparison to xbox live and i would rather jump in on a platform that is well supported online.

I didn't go for the ps3 due to the lack of good games and the cost. I know it has a blu ray player but i don't have any blue ray discs. If only Sony did what microsoft did and brought out the console with no internal player (blu ray or HD) and made it optional they could drop the cost by £80, i would have been more interested then.
There are only 2 games for the Sony that are specific to that console which i will miss GT and MGS4 but buying a console for £300 just for those 2 games isn't worth it to me. If they do what they did with the PS2 and drop the cost to the floor after a year or 2 then i may get one then to paly the above 2 games.

I must point out that i am normally a Sony man. I think they relied too heavily on their brand loyalty on this one and have missed a trick with the PS3, at least at the moment anyway.

Edit to add@ the xbox is quite noisy - on a par with my pc for noise so if you have a small space and sit fairly close to the system it may be a bit annoying if you are not used to nosiy fans. (an excuse to turn the volume up :))

X360's HD-DVD capabilities are less than good. But the Ps3 as a BD drive is excellent.

BD will become the choice of the IT world in the end to transport data, it got way more capacity and is technologically superior. HD-DVD is only good for film content at the moment and that's because it came out first. BD is playing catchup in that way only. To wish you could have the PS3 without the BD drive is daft, it's backwardly compatible and just because you don't have any BD films right now doesn't mean you won't go and rent them etc etc in the future.

As Dr Doom pointed out there is a severe lack of good games pencilled in for next year apart from 3/4 big ones so far.

I agree, the PS3's bluray player is good, that's one of the reasons i bought one but it depends on how much you're going to use it. If bluray does win the HD war then prices of bluray players will soon drop through the floor! Remember how much DVD players were when they first came out?....

Anyway, no matter how good the bluray player these things are games consoles & the 360 wins hands down! :D

Same here, have both. And totally agree with the above. If I now had to choose I'd cetainly keep the 360. have even just purchased a 360 elite and a HD player.
Also worth a mention that 360 online just seems better, yeh you have to pay (£40 a year nothing big) but the community is larger, multiplayer games are just better and the download content is top notch.

they sorted that out for the Elite, its now nice and silent :) has a different DVD drive to the premium packs.

My opinion is not daft just because it is different to yours. i simply would like the option of whether to have the drive or not and have a reduced cost on the console itself as my primary goal for a games console is to play games that is all :)
My pc is my media centre and is used as such, for films music etc. The consoles are only dipping their foot in the water of being media centres and in my mind are a while away from doing it all properly so in the mean time i want a games console which is why iw ent with the x box as it concentrates on being a games console.

the 40Gb model doesnt have the backwards capability and they have stopped making the 60Gb one.

Xbox 360 is the console to have for gaming. As Alex has said in future ps3 for movies...but then you may as well buy the ps3 in a year when it should be cheaper.

Got both personnally would pick 360 to play on every time simply because games just seem to work much better on it At the moment playing CoD 4, Kane +Lynch and fight night round 3 all fantastic on 360. and as said before xbox live is tops.

Plus am I not right in thinking that the 60gb version had wifi connection capability and the 40gb can only be set up via fixed ethernet cable?

Bugger....was going to get a PS3 in the new year and the daft sods have complicated things by dropping some of the key features from the 60gb version!

This said, my mate has both PS3 and 360 and although I do like the 360 he is now on his 5th replacement box!!!!! Thats just an overly unacceptable failure rate for me!!!!
Plus I do think the graphics on the PS3 are slightly better.

Also BluRay asside, standard DVD's are unbelievable via the PS3 with its enhancement engine...so still lots of plus points.

Coming from a Sony FANBOY :D go buy a 360.

I've got the PSx (launch day machine - still works) - PS2 launch day machine (still works) and was excited about the prospect of the PS3 ... biiiig mistake. Sony really hacked me and I think alot of Europeans off by releasing in the rest of world and then wait so long to launch here.

In the meantime, I went out and bought a 360 (after playing on my mates) and found the Live setup so easy and the range of games available basically sums it up.

Oh and Grand Theft Auto 4 - ready to be released on the 360 today, tomorrow or even Christmas Eve ... but no, we HAVE to wait for the PS3 game to be coded ... not impressive if you ask me!

I've got both, dont play on either... lol

I did put Xubuntu on my PS3 the day I got it, and it does play Blu ray, but then I have the HD player for the xbox too.

Got a Wii too, dont play that either...

So, amount played in the last 4 weeks, the PS3 wins just.

O cumon man there not that bad at all, I got mine on 1st day it came out and it latest till august this year when it finaly conked out on me but now I have a brand new 1 and have been guaranteed it won't go wrong. Was a clip holding the board that was the problem, under xtreme heat it melted and the thingy chip thing detached from it as board warps so microsoft have told me!!
Tis well worth it, cheaper, just as good, a lot more games and live can't be beat.
Tis the choice for me :D
