View Full Version : Hardwood/Plywood or MDF
I'm going to B&Q tomorrow to get wood for my speaker bracket things (6.5" brackets for the front).
Now, in the original guide 6mm MDF was used. I was wondering if hardwood would be better though.
Any ideas?

i would choose mdf mate, might not be the strongest of the bunch but i found it to have good "sound absorbing" properties if thats the right word? and its nice to work with(if u can put up with the dust:d)

double :D
like for like plywood is tougher and can put up with damp better then MDF but its much harder to work with. If i was making some I would use MDF. Make sure to get some bolts/nuts while your at the store to fix the brakets in to the door.
This is what happened to my speaker brackets that i made using the template in the download section - made from 12mm MDF and lasted less that 12 months

The brackets i made for the 2 group buys were made out of 18mm marine plywood.

What tools are you guys using to cut the circular mounts?
hardwood, mdf does the above
Cheers guys, i was thinking about MDF as its easier to cut but i was thinking about hardwood because at 6mm MDF just won't be strong enough.
I'm going to use 18mm MDF for the speaker rings so that will be fine.
I'm using a jigsaw to do it, i'm very very careful and patient with it though.

Glad mine are perspex:devil:
Dont forget a mask when cutting mdf !
Got the plywood today. Saw was broken the other day when i went into B&Q.
Went for 6mm ply. The rings will be made from 18mm MDF.
