Ok plan to go full BPU in Jan.

To me this means

Double Decatt

Fuel pump

Plugs

FCD

Exhaust

Restrictor ring

Intercooler (ok not really needed for BPU but hey)

Now whats BPU+ and ++ and +++ etc all about?

As I see hybrids as TPU (Tricky Performance Upgrade) and singles as MWAWOWPU (Might want a week off work performace upgrade)

Basic Performance Upgrade™ (BPU™). This terms was coined by our founder Mark Tozer to best describe the basic set of performance modifications on a 1993-1998 Twin Turbo Supra. Instead of having to type out every basic mod a car had, we came up with this term. In it's simplest form it describes a Supra that is running elevated boost. In more detailed form the original BPU™ consisted of the following modifications:

I. Downpipe. The downpipe replaces the factory CATS and allows for quicker turbo spooling and 1-2 psi of boost increase. Good for around 35-40 HP.

II. Aftermarket Exhaust. Anytime you can free-up exhaust energy in a turbo car it is a good thing. The factory 2JZGTE engine with the BPU™ mods can flow quite a bit of exhaust gasses. Most aftermarket CAT-Back exhausts are good for around 15HP+ on a BPU™ Supra running 18psi of boost.

III. Elevated Boost (17-18psi+). The major gain in HP and torque (up to 440rwhp and 410 ft.lbs of torque to the wheels) comes when you increase the boost in a Twin Turbo Supra. Increasing the boost can be done via a manual bleeder which allows for higher boost, but no control over boost levels. Manual boost controller, which uses a manual valve for adjusting boost levels (non-electronic). Electronic Boost Controller (most popular), which allows for in-cabin adjustment and regulation of boost pressure.

IV. Boost Cut Controller (BCC). The GReddy BCC is an electronics interceptor device that modifies the manifold pressure signal (boost) to the factory ECU. The Toyota factory ECU in the 2JZGTE Supra has a factory imposed fuel-cut at 1 bar (14.7 psi) of boost. The BCC is adjustable and alters the factory fuel-cut level so higher boost can be run.

Those four items are the foundation of the original BPU™ FAQ written for MKIV and typically produce anywhere from 440-500 HP (crankshaft) on both automatic and 6 speed 2JZGTE equipped cars. Numbers vary upon state of tune and vehicle condition but the formula works and is run in hundreds upon hundreds of Supras. This BPU™ term has become so popular throughout the world and the NET that it is often quoted in magazines and even by other car owners when describing a Supra TT.

I have heard of BPU™+ and BPU™++, etc what is the difference? Answer: The first "+" comes with the addition of cam gears which can give you another 20hp. The second "+" in BPU™++ constitutes an "underdrive-pulley" which can give you another 5-7hp. The third "+" in BPU+++ comes with the addition of a front mount intercooler, the fourth "+" comes with fuel upgrade (injectors, pumps etc), the fifth "+" comes with ECU/computer upgrade.

Ahh thanks man

So with my fuel pump and posibly injectors as well as FMIC i would be BPU++

If you want to call it that sure, go ahead. No one here uses the + bits since the supposed claims of HP gain made my Suprastore are b*llocks. It was just a technique to get people to buy needless stuff like the pulleys.

Remember these were created back in the day when BPU was considered highly modified (10+ years ago) ;)

Am I right in saying though that there must come a point in the whole BPU +..++....+++ saga where you are spending money and the stock turbos are just not able to deliver anymore power?? also is there a point where BPU +++etc on an old set of TT's could be the death of them, this may be worth mentioning to the Noobies joining?? :search:

It's a case of diminishing returns, plus some misinformation/bad assumptions

E.g. the IC, you'll only see a gain if the stock one is shot. Same goes for fuel pump. A good service would release more HP than some of the mods mentioned.

Is the stock IC that good? I thought a FMIC would be much better, when the warmer weather is in anyway.

MR2 one is pretty crap.

Oh, i didn't mean for BHP. Well i did in a way, but i meant more with the intake temps.

Scott =o

Is a large FMIC needed on the stock twin set up though, I dont think so, sending very large volumes of air to the stock system is a waste is it not ?? a good quality SMIC would work just as well ?

The stock will be fine, but obviously most of the ones floating around now are past their best (some I've seen are virtually useless!).

The SMIC has a nice setup, fully ducted where air is actually drawn through the core. The FMIC (again on nearly all the cars I've seen at club meets) are unducted and due to it being in front of the rad air is being drawn though, only pushed.

Totally agree a FMIC is pointless on a car that runs stock twins, but to go full BPU it always best to get a new SMIC. Unless yours is totally mint condition.

once question tho

if you went single or hybrid would that be APU? ( Advance perforance upgrade?)

If we're using the terms Suprastore used then yes, single is known as APU. Hybrids were rarely used in the US so never got a specific term. As we're making it up as we go along, perhaps MPU (Medium performance upgrade) :D
