View Full Version : DIY 2nd decat
Im thinking of fitting a 2nd decat myself soon in the near future. Im presuming its pretty easy to do. Jack the car up and unbolt the 2nd cat section and refit the decat. Anyone found any issues when doing the job diy - e.g seized bolts etc?? I know removing the 1st cat can be a pain, but is the 2nd a lot easier???
Also, I presume 2nd decats are exactly the same on uk and jap specs??
I have removed the exaust from an NA and the bolts on the second cat to the first cat are a pain to get to if lying down. Also found it very hard to lift the exhaust and reconect it to the first cat (it weighs a fair bit and our lying on your side). Not impossible but a little tricky
Looks like a job for the local zorst place then :)
*edit* will i need colder plugs for the slight boost hike with just a 2nd decat and cat back?
I noticed a slight difference when I put my Ik24's in like a nice popping on the limiter :)
My point is will I need a colder plug or will the stock plugs cause some missing with a boost raise thats probably going to be just under 1 bar...
I would say that would be overkill.

Ill be changing my 130k mile stock j spec fuel pump for a walbro when I decat too, just to be on the safe side :)
Now thats a very good idea ;)
Remember the filter also.

Did the fuel filter earlier in the year :)
For the 2nd decat it's dead easy. If the bolts snap just fit some new ones, any basic steel ones will do the job.
I needed the front on stands to do mine but apart from being a bit awkward to get a good pull at the spanner its not a bad job. Even easier if you can find something to prop up the exhaust till you get the 1st bolt back in.
I take it that there are gaskets between the de cats?
yip, slightly different style of gasket between 1st and 2nd cats its more like a spiral wound graphite ring but i'm sure decat pipes just need normal flange shaped gaskets. My 2nd decat has normal gaskets anyway.
If a wrench, a dremel tool and an angle grinder can't get the bolts off with a DIY job whats the best option? Take it to a garage to get them melted off? :(
What plugs are in there at the moment ?
Ive got the copper stock equivalents in at the moment as recommended in the FAQ guide on here..
