View Full Version : Fibreglass install
I will be making my own install soon from fibreglass and had not sure how thick to make the layers - should they be the same thickness as an enclosure made of MDF?

no mine isnt, as long as its a solid enclosure i did 3 to 4 layers of fiberglass
Does the sound quality improve and what type of fibreglass did you use?

dont know i used fiberglass matting from ebay and you can get loads of hardener there too, and mine sounds ok
4 layers of 2oz matt should be fine, just roll it out, with metal roller if u can get one or go easy on the resin
Is it a curved install you are going for ?
If so it is easier to make the base out of mdf then cut the ring for the sub and mount it in the position you are looking to have it with wooden dowel. Then using fabric stretch that over the ring and on to the base and staple it in to position.
Mix up some resin and apply that to the fabric materia (wait for it to dry) this will give you your basic shape and structure.
Now just add a couple of layers of fibreglass to that and if painting it use bodyfiller on top to get it smooth.
perhaps you can sell him the base i made u, if u still have it

I have already made a double sub box out of the whole boot, I'm getting bored of not having a boot and want to relocate the subs and also build new door panels. Also I would like to get an aero top at some point and would need the boot space back for the roof.
I'm planning of moving the subs next to the rear seats where the normal speakers should be and then having two speakers in the front door panels. Not sure if its possible but I'm gonna give it a go.
I knew that I would have to use MDF to mount the speakers and build frames for them.
