View Full Version : Just imagine...
Go back a few years to a time where not too many people had computers or email, only one ISP was available and business web sites were almost unheard of - now that is Kos today.
Now think if you had gone back to this era and knew what you knew now, what venture would you look to start? Bear in mind that the island only has about 25k people, the majority of income comes from tourism and word of mouth seems to be the accepted form of advertising.
internet cafe
Surprisingly lots here already. Almost every bar has one. ;)

Nah due to a predominantly strict Greek Orthodox following. Or did you mean a whore house?
I think I'd probably just chill out with a cold beer and resist introducing the things that make life what it is in the UK...

but personaly id chill with a beer on the beach
Good point my friend. ;)
Although there are a few things that you could do to prey on the tourists - you mentioned earlier that mobile phone stuff is expensive - how about getting in a load of cheap phone chargers from China and selling them, renting them out (directly or to hotels?) or setting up "charge zones" so people can juice up their phones, iPods etc without having to bring over a charger? (again this could be in hotels or offered through them).
The only thing is you'll have to ensure people know about you before they leave home otherwise they will bring their own stuff and travel adapters etc.
It's not likely to be big business but if it works out don't forget me ;)
internet business directory .. you know one stop click to list all the other places.
ala. www,swindonweb.com... thy've updated it, but basically click on the letter pad on the left and ou'll see what i mean,
you can then sideline setting up their own sites etc as well.

Which ever you think will make you the most money Col....:d
How about Pest Control company? Last time I was in Kos it was crawling with ants.:( That's what you get from staying in a Mitsis hotel....
H.

Allegedly, there is already a whore house on the island run by a man you would not want to cross :(

The ants aren't so much of a problem now but mossies still are :(
There is an extremely nice marina here with lots of fine boats. I wonder what services they would require - if any? :sly:

That's kind of where I am thinking but my IT skills are not great :(

34,000 Euro licence fee is a little off putting to me ;)
If not too many people have a computer or email, I can't see much value in investing in websites that they can't access.
Personally I'd say open a PC supplies and advice store, bring the internet to the masses. :)

I agree - too soon for that yet.

That may have legs. The only downside is my lack of Greek language skills :(

You lack of PC skills might be an issue too ;)
What you need is a member of staff... like me for example.

Harsh - but correct :(

No thanks. One miserable pedant is more than enough ;)

I want this one! http://www.boatshed.com/galeon_replica-boat-41472.html
My own party boat! :D
I have thought more about this and came up with these snippets too.
1. The idea needs to work within a limited market of 25k people. So, almost as if you had to target a small town with around 1500 Brit residents.
2. In saying that, once the season starts, the island hosts about 800k visitors.
3. The tourism industry accounts for almost all of the GDP on the island and has many independent hotels and apartment blocks as well as hotels tied in to the major holiday companies.
4. Kos has a very impressive marina (by Greek standards) with 250 berths.
5. "Nice" cars do not come high up in the list of wants in most Greek minds
6. There is no "Ikea" type outlet in all of the Dodecanese with the nearest being Athens
Given the above, can anyone shed any light on:
1. what services can be offered to boat owners using the marina? I ask as they would normally have more money and therefore more disposable income.
2. Do Ikea franchise or is it company owned?
Not much there other than ramblings but if someone can come up with anything, let me know.
Nice. They get some amazing boats on there.
CJ - there are opportunities to act as an agent rather than a full brokerage. Basically you photograph and inspect the boats on behalf of a broker. If I knew the slightest thing about boats I'd consider setting one up myself.
I could run BoatshedGreece.com and you can operate the Kos and other island hoping inspections. Waddya think? ;)

Wireless Internet connections.
Island tours? "Kos With Col".
As mentioned already about the marina and Internet service directory, it was done on Dragons den once that the guy came up with the idea of internet site solely for the Marina covering all aspects or tourism etc where you keep them informed of things happening.
It was paid by subscription and also had potential where companies could rent space from you to advertise to the rich, restraunts etc.

Can someone explain in more detail how this could work? PM if you prefer. Also, this (http://www.kosmarina.gr/generalplan.php) is a link to the current marina site.
Just wishing you luck CJ. Some smart ideas appearing. :)

Wow, that's really classy for a marina. Some of them haven't got a clue!
Do you know the island well ? perhaps you could hire yourself out as a tour guide. taking tourists out to secluded beaches. include a picnic and wine and you get paid to chill out in the sun :)

I have already put on feelers along these lines with some tour companies but hadn't thought about more select group affairs. ;)

They advertise themselves as the best in Greece - and looking at other sites, they may be right.

Thanks you friend. ;)
The thing is, if you can earn around 1000 per month for 12 months, you can live very comfortably. :)

Reminds me of an awkward moment in a general store in Rhodes. We'd gone to the counter to pay. My kids were about 10 / 11 and my sons eyes were about level with a pack of porno playing cards on the counter. He seemed very interested in the big black guy sticking his manhood up the young ladies ass on the cover. Luckily, his pocket money was eventually spent on the sweets right next to the stack of cards.
When he was older, I told him the meaning of incongruous.

I think what they sell to us "heathen" tourists and what they (publicly) buy themselves are governed by different sets of morals. :d
Hi CJ
Perhaps take a walk down to the Marina and simply ask the people who own/rent/use the boats what is the one thing/service they would want or enjoy (pay for) ? I love Skiathos and Corfu, they feel like home to me, but I must admit if I relocated there, I don't know how i would make my living? :search:
Cheers

Good idea that and I'm off down there tomorrow. I am also lucky enough to have a job already working at a bar and this thread was more to see if there were different opportunities rather than to suggest something for me to do.
