View Full Version : "Check if already posted" - vBulletin add-in

I noticed this in a vBulletin 3.6.5 forum I was using earlier - each time you go to do a new thread it adds a search button next to the title so you can do a quick search for similar posts first.

It's quite bold and obvious too - can we have it?

(see attached)

It looks like it's available for a lot of different vB versions but here is one example for 3.6.8

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=122990

Their "Attention Zero-Posters" hack looks like it could be fun too, chase those silent monkey members!

chase those silent monkey members!

What have you got against monkeys?

They are too quiet and smell like hair.

Oh and what happens if you click the check if already posted button? Can you then click back and it keeps what you'd written in the form?

It pops open another window with your search results in (it only checks the subject line so it's not completely awesome) and leaves what you've already written alone.

...moderately awesome then?

Would not have the usual "REPOST" comments as much.

To reply to your suggestion Michael, I think that Mawby thoroughly checks all the plug ins and add ons that come with the forum vbb updates before deciding whether to run them or not.

For example 3.6.8 had a security issue that required some updates from them, and he'll usually hold back on updates to see if any issues arise.

I doubt he checks every single 3rd party hack but if I'm wrong I'm very impressed.

I'm sure he checks the compatibility of existing hacks when vB release official updates though, hence the loss of arcade, iTrader etc.

Or you could train it to post "whatever" on a specifically targeted post also?

For what it's worth, I like re-posts. I don't get on here as much as some, and if I click on 'new posts' I end up with about 10 pages worth over two days. Obviously I don't read all of them, so a re-post sometimes allows me to see something that otherwise I may have missed.

Just my opinion :)

I'm not really posting this to prevent reposts as such, my theory is that people search, see an existing thread, bump it with their new input ("my car also has this problem, I've tried the above but no joy, any other ideas?") which means it goes back up the list.

I'm not on a crusade to remove the repost, just help users to be a bit more search enabled - like yourself I've also been introduced to a topic via a repost many times, usually because the reposter has described the topic better in the title.

People don't have to use the button, I just thought it might be a useful free enhancement for the forum.

Nic

I think it would be useful addition if available.

I don't like the way it pop ups as you hover over the button. I think it should wait until you click on the down arrow before displaying the menu.

I might see if I can fix that

mawby
06-06-08, 13:28
I have a better plan that involves no menu at all, but it'll have to wait until I get home.

Opinions on this change? Better/worse than the manual search?

jamesmark
13-06-08, 20:19
I think it is an improvement, well to be honest anything is an improvement on this subject as never had it before.

Might work a little better on the folk that do not bother their arse to search.

Pabs
13-06-08, 21:53
I DO search before posting anything, but this plugin, IMO, is brilliant. It saved me at least 2 or 3 searches over the last few days - as I go to post something and find decent links without having to! :)

Whitesupraboy2

A good change, even if it doesn't show any relevant threads, it makes you think to check before posting something that may have been posted before. This is especially important in the Off Topic & Supra Chat areas.

RobSheffield

It's brilliant,

Like JamesMark i nearly started a thread to ask a tech question, then immediately found an answer from the results displayed :)
