View Full Version : Recommend me some speakers!
I've just fitted a new Head Unit - Sony CDXMP80 and its already blown the front passenger side speaker
I need some 6.5" (17cm) fronts to replace them with, and I suppose I may as well get the rears too while I'm at it! (I guess they are 6.5" too?)
Anybody recommend a good combo - will run off the headunit for the mo, but likely to be amped up in the coming months........
Cheers!
If I remember correctly the front are 13cm - it just a huge grill (i'm sure someone will correct me) I'm pretty sure the back are 17cm...
As far as speakers go - I have genisis Kenetic's in mine.

i didnt think the front speakers were 6.5" behind those big speaker covers,im sure i read somewhere they are 4.5" or something like that,i may be wrong! just thought id say before you went and bought some! better safe then sorry
Yup - they are 4", but if you mount the new ones on the door card they take, and is room for, 6.5" no worries!!! :D
Been out of the ice world for a while, just need to know some good components for the front and 2 way I guess for the rear.......

ohh well thanx for telling me that, i would of gone and bout some 4's, but 4 x6" seem much better :D . My personal recommendation is Rockford fosgate, had them before and very good quality sound straight off a head unit and off of a small sized amp its excellant! I am hopeing to replace my sound system soon all at once, havent much idea on good head units at moment though, need one that can run a slave unit for a graphic equaliser or something like that. I always go 2-way on speakers, if you want better treble get a crossover and tweeters. how much you looking to spend?

Focal... Every day and twice on Sundays :D
http://www.caraudiodiscount.com/acatalog/focal_speakers_car_audio.html
And I can do about 25% off their prices...
Mmmm Utopia's :innocent:
Only twice on sundays? The MP80 was three times ;)
:D
They are a bit pricey though aren't they ;) was kinda budgeting for under 200 (spent too much lately!) - whats the next best thing? And I prolly wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway! ;)

Next best thing... Focal Access :D
I can do the component set and the 2-way set for under £200 easily!
Only once on Sundays for these though ;) That's still every day of the week though :p
Matt,
Whats your number chappy - my Credit Card is itching ;) Prolly give you a bell tomorrow and order them up then, ok?
Cheers!

Hi - am new to the group. Prob for Matt H. Am also looking to change speakers in my j-spec 96 man sup(just got it). which focal speakers fit ? if doing front and rear - running off alpine head unit would there be enough bass for reasonable reproduction on dance/hip hop to be audible at say 70-90 leptons (motorway is my daily drive). If you recommend a sub also where the f*** does it go ? Matt how do I contact you ?

I'm contactable on 01622 683044, Monday to Saturday... Usually... I'm can get fairly busy, so if you can't get me first time, please call back, don't rely on anyone telling me you've phoned, and don't rely on me returning any calls. Not because I'm arrogant, purely because I get so many calls every day, (usually from bloody people trying to sell me electricity, gas, health insurance, web sites, advertising etc. ), I just can't keep up... ;)
As for what I can do, look at the link above and deduct 25% from their prices, and that's close enough...
I'm in Maidstone if anyone wants to visit :)
This is a cut/paste from a PM I sent someone recently regarding speakers... Hope it helps.
Regarding speakers, it all depends on how you want the car to look or sound.
If you prefer to take an easyish route, you can either replace the front speakers with some good quality 10cm Focal speakers. You'll need to make new mounting holes in the plastic speaker pods as the stock speakers only have 3 mountings.
Alternatively, you can remove the stock speaker boxes and grilles from the door, then mount a Focal 17cm speaker directly to the door card using the Focal grilles in place of the stock ones.
Dynamat is sooooooo worth doing. I've used 3 rolls of Dynamat Extreme per door. Now I know that is a bit extreme, but I wanted the best I could get.
You could cover the inside of the door skin with about 1.5 rolls if you don't want to spend too much, or do it at a later date.
The rears are easy. The stock grilles just pop off and the speakers are easily accessible... They do take a bit of levering as they're bonded to the bodywork.
They are 17cm speakers already. Again, you'll need to make new mountings. The only one to be careful with is the bottom fixing nearest the bottom of the back seat on either side as there is a wiring harness just behind the panelwork.
Went for the Focal Access 165A and 165CA - cheers Matt, I'll look forward to the fitting fun when they arrive! :D
Speaking of which - any idea of ETA Matt, I know you hinted Thurs as you thought they were all in stock, but nowts turned up!! ;)
All fitted today, Focal Access 165 front and rear but component up front and 2 way in the rear. Mounted in the front on the door cards no problem, only put the woofers in with the crossover, left the OEM tweaters in the dash for now.
What a difference in the sound quality though - superb :D And a VERY good price from Matt compared to the online websites - cheers Matt :D
Just need a sub now - so I hope you get cracking on that Aerotop sub box Matt ;) :p :D
Neil,
Did these go straight in without much mucking about ? Which crossover / amp are you driving them with ? CA's in the rear ?
Ta,
Rob.
Pretty much Rob.
The rears all well easy, pop the grill of (just pulls off) and unscrew the old one, screw the Focal in, twist the tweater to face the front - job done. And yeah 165 CA - nice bit of bass too!
The fronts were a little trickier but still easy. door panel off, remove old one and the huge plastic thing. Take the card inside to mark and fit the speaker, wire up the crossovers which come with them (165A) and job done!
I've got them powered by my Sony CDX-MP80, which is 4x52w Head Unit. Plan to power them with an amp in future perhaps, but they're darn good with just the h/u!
:D
Hi Neil,
I want to order the same speakers as yours this week, I was thinking about those ones before, Matt recommended them to me as well. It seems like you're pleased with them so I guess I'll go for them.
Stupid question, what's a 'crossover' ?
Also, did you use Dynamat? If so how much did you use?
Any other bits I'll need to install these other than the speakers themselves?
thanks mate
Sorry Jake, must've missed this one!
The crossover is the box that comes with component speakers that takes the input and splits it into an output for the midrange cone (removing the high end frequencies) and an output for the tweater (removing the low end). Its a box about the size of a fag packet. That was for the fronts, the rears are 2 way so its all built into the speaker!
Extra you'll need speaker wire and connections as the Focals don't come with any :conf: :stickpoke:
I didn't use any dynamat, hadn't got any, and I was too lazy if I'm honest! Just adds weight to the car too and since I'm not going for a uber install I didn't see the point! ;)
Think that wraps it all up, except to say they were about £190 from Matt if I remember and the cheapest web price was £230+
:D
Thanks Neil, I'll ring Matt and order some up then.
Bugger, Matt isn't there today and they are out of stock of the rears until Monday anyway : (
The guy I spoke to quoted me £85 for the rears and £109 for the fronts.
Don't know what to do now, I wanted to fit them this week seeing as I'm off work.
Bummer - those prices sound about right though!!
Worth hanging on for mate - they are well good:)

Those prices are very tempting. Just upgraded the fronts and now the back ones seem even woolier! Need to sort them out next - or do I stick the 12" sub I've already got in the boot next... decisions decisions... :)
I've been looking into this stuff today. I'm now wondering if I should go for 3 way crossovers in case I do get a sub later.
Opinions?

Just get one of these and then let Matt set it up, allows for serious adjustability.
Ben..
That looks like one serious Xover :)

I think my head unit has a built in sub controller so that should make things a bit easier. However, it will be a shame not to have a toy like that to play with!!!

I'm struggling to work out how to do this. I've got the door card out and on my kitchen table. I've got the old grill off but I can't figure how to fit the speaker to the door card or how the grill fixes on.
Does the speaker all go behind the door card and fixes with screws through from the front ?
If I do that the screw heads will mean that I won't have a flat surface for the new grills to go onto.
Did your speakers have some instructions with them? The only insructions with these are for fitting the tweeters.
:conf:
OK nevermind, I just realised that the grill comes apart. Doh!
:stupid:
LOL!!! Glad you got it sorted mate! I didn't get instructions, but fitted the plastic on the outside of the car, dropped the speaker in that and grill on top - job done! :D
They all in now?
Good, That how I've done it too. All ready to put the door cards back into the car but it's pouring rain and dark now. I might have to finish it tomorrow.
I can't wait to hear what the sound like
They're in! Well, at the front Ive only got the Woofers in. They're wired directly up, not using the crossover at the moment until I can get the Tweeters in. The sound is really good, as promised by HISUPE and Matt Harwood. I'm well impressed.
Thanks a lot for all your help Neil and Matt. I really appreciate it.

No problem, glad you like them.
As a side note, all speakers have a 'bedding in' period. Ideally, don't play them too loud until they've got a few hours of play behind them.
This helps the suspension settle better and makes them sound nicer/smoother after a few hours.

Thats interesting - never knew that!!!
No probs Jake - glad you're happy with them mate, or I'd have felt like a bit of a tw4t for recommending them!!! LOL!! :D
