View Full Version : Exhaust Law? :o(
BOY racers have until next July to get rid of modified exhaust pipes on their cars.
The measure is contained in a binding EU directive on noise pollution.
The law, which comes into effect next year will ban the exhausts as part of a range of measures aimed at reducing noise emissions.
But it is not yet clear how the Government will enforce the rule, or whether drivers could face fines for having enlarged exhaust pipes.
Complaints
There have been increasing complaints about the activities of boy racers in souped-up cars racing each other, even on main roads, under cover of darkness.
The evidence is found in the "donut" circular rings left in the middle of the road.
But it is the noise from their modified exhausts which has most annoyed so many drivers and householders who have to endure the terribly loud grating sound of roaring exhausts all day and night from these vehicles.
Got this from a mate with an MR2 who just replaced his exhaust. Anyone familiar with this and how would it work?? :search::(
does any one know what the noise limit is
probably BS.. ive seen these before never came to light.
I think the law is under 100db..
May be true, but will belive it when it happens, still going to get my RS*R on in the near future...:d
Think they should deal with noisy bikes first... they are far far worse!!
I can see their point on the Saxo VTR with a 5inch backbox that serves no function other than to make loads of noise and annoy everyone, but for a proper performance system on a performance car this seems wrong to me!
I always assumed there was a limit which was applied by the Police at their discretion i.e a car thunders past and they can pull it and do a db level test which if it fails would lead to a notice to remove the system or they would seize the car. The fact is the stock system on a Supra is quite a large one anyway!
Good way for the OE manufactiers to make a tonne of money if they ever did get it enforced!

Who TF leaves donut rings on the road when racing?:conf:
That article reads like the typical rubbish from some nosy, NIMBY sodding killjoy who's written to his local MP after moving next to a busy road.

He's just e-mailed me to say the full article is on the above link and looks like this is just for Ireland at present.
PHEW! :)
Just read it and to be fair it's no different to what some people do now in that you would refit and lower your setup for the MOT then put it back afterwards! ;)
Imagine the impact if it was accepted nationwide!:(
You only have to read this bit to understand the mentality of these people;
"It would have a huge impact on the quality of life for householders and law-abiding, responsible drivers who are being intimidated on our country's roads," added the MEP.
So what they're saying is, anyone with a modified exhaust on their car;
> Isn't law abiding
> Isn't a responsible driver
> Intimidates other road users
> Adversely affects other people's quality of life
How come these morons can get away with such blatent prejudice?

Who fancys getting a quote for a genuine toyota exhaust?
I htink the worst that would happen would be a firm noise level introduced, and possibly cars after a certain manufacture dat ewould be affected, a la road tax...
Can but hope anyway. Bloody saxo drivers

Yeh the noise limit is 96 db maximum. Atm, mine is putting out around 107db without the baffle in! Having said that, i accidently set my neighbours car alarm off this morning! Oops! ;)
Worrying reading. Hopefully it will die a death as some 'may happen' policies often do. Monitoring and enforcing it would be an issue especially as its so prevalent. Sometimes I think I live in the chav capital of England  it would mean increasing the police numbers at least 10 fold to make even the slightest impression on the loclal spotty oiks.
Fingers crossed, eh? :search:

Correct, it's 74db according to the link below

Cars? WTF? The noise comes from 17yr olds who remove the mufflers from their MoPeds. They go back and to up small built-up roads.
Just like in Spain.
so if they ban modified exhaust you'll just here lots of induction roar instead. What about cars like Ultima? They'd have no hope.

Last year my girfriend and I were going for a meal at a table that was booked when a police car pulled us over for having an aftermarket exhaust (small 2.5inch magnex back box) and after being told to follow them to the local station they tested the db level and it came to 97.2. They told me the limit was 96db, gave me a prohibition and told me I couldn't move my car from their car park. Not only did we miss our meal but we had to get a taxi home.
Needless to say, I wasn't impressed.

I'd be screwed with my Sup'. God knows how loud it is.
I'd love to confuse them with a quietish exhaust but have a single turbo, external wastegate with open dump tube. :d
I presume the noise level has to be checked at a certain RPM, such as 4,000rpm like they do at trackdays ?
Commission Directive 2007/34/EC of 14 June 2007 amending, for the purposes of its adaptation to technical progress, Council Directive 70/157/EEC concerning the permissible sound level and the exhaust system of motor vehicles (Text with EEA relevance) (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi!celexplus!prod!DocNumber&type_doc=Directive&an_doc=2007&nu_doc=34&lg=en)

I'd assume so but that wont make an affect on the wastegate at standstill would it?
Well thats just buggered the TVR club then
I got fed up with all the "boy racers" going up and down the local dual carrigway.
So i went and brought me a supra to show them how its done!!

I'm glad I kept my stock exhaust hung in the garage then. ;)
wonder what sort of DB I could get out a viper with side pipes.......
so know one has really cleared up this them.
if it happens,
then lots more stabbing, raping , viloence, drugs, murders etc
i know ill be bored

Yep, this is going to be a drag for classic car and kit car owners, custom stainless exhausts I doubt will get type approval so what do you do if you're in this boat?
A lot of classic cars & kit cars you will never find a system for unless you get one custom made.
What a suprise an MEP talking bollocks.
One good point. How do they prove it? Say a bobby pulled you over in the supra how can he prove its aftermarket? To your avage copper he aint going to have a clue as 99% of supras have aftermarket exhausts
Just switch to the new range of quiet performance exhaust - Nur Spec RX, Tanabe Touring Medallion...
Surely anything like this being put in place would halt about 95% of the Jap car imports?
