Hi Paul,

I take it a 'kit' is for 2 bulbs? What would you recommend for high/low beams? If you were only going for one, would it be high or low? Would you do something like 4500k for low beam, 8000k for high beam or does it not work like that?

Thanks

Kit comes with 2 bulbs, 2 resister packs and all wiring needed, they plug straight in, no cutting of wires needed, just got to find somewhere to mount the resister packs.

I can sell you any of the kits in any combination you like. If you can afford it go for the whole lot in 8000k!

As I understand it regular low and high beams use the same bulb, and it's just the reflectors that create the longer/brighter high beam, so 4500k in both would still give you the same difference in brightness (i.e you don't need a more powerful bulb for the high beam). Correct me if I'm wrong.

DON'T GET ME WRONG paul....

I really MAY fancy some of this ! ! !
BUT,
WHY are the bulbs (not just YOURS - everyones !) refered to as
****K ? ?

that's NOT supposed to be Kelvin is it ? ?

Kelvin is a measure of HEAT not LIGHT - or, are they saying
"the light given out by 'something' at ****K heat" ? ? ?:conf:

ie. the SUN is at a temperature of ~5,600K so 8,000K is a teensy
bit warm ! ? !

your supposed to measure light (colour of) in terms of
wavelength or frequency.

just wondered.... makes NO difference really....still fancy a couple
NOW that they're a 'reasonable'-ish price ! ! !:p

[ps. SORRY for posting HERE - just someone might know the
answer 'HERE ?]'

Paul is it poss. to get replacement bulbs and what sort of money , and does this mean we will at last be able to see where we are going at night ??

03-10-03, 20:47
Steve, I don't know the exact details but I think the "temperature" of the light refers more to its colour than its actual power. The higher the temperature, the further away from the yellow colour of standard bulbs. ie 8000k will be whiter than 5000k.

Steve W
03-10-03, 20:51
YEAH, thought that was it, just a Bulbie-Peeps comparison scale ? !

'cos otherwise the 8000K's will be a LIKKLE BIT BLUE/MAUVE ! !.......

Steve W
03-10-03, 20:53
....is it poss. to get replacement bulbs ...

good point Dude...

do they last FOREVER ? ? or like Halogen ~400-1000 hrs or so ? ?

(purely hyperthetical as I hardly ever drive my car anyhow :p )

Bulbs cost around £70 + VAT on there own if needed and yes you will now be able see where your going.
I tried them out on Saturday night(Southend) properly for the first time and they are very very good, I'm gonna get a set for high beam now to finish the job off.

I will want a set for fog, dipped & full. the brighest ones:D but need to know a bit more though before comitting:

1. Any chance of seeing some comparison pics please of:
4500k
6000k
8000k

2. Are they the same brightess but get bluer the higher the number/rating?

3. The make?

4. Are replacement bulbs redily available from normal bulb people or do other bulbs fit (ie Philips)?

5. Are they the same kit for all types (fog, dipped, main)

Many thanks if you can answer all these - a bit of a pain:(

Stephen V

PS just got my Soop Saturday & it gives me such a big GRIN factor
:D :D . was going for a FMIC first but i think i'll buy these first so i can see what tree i'm about to hit. - but they are a good price too:)

Paul Whiffin

1. I have no pics unfortunately.

2. Same brightness, just different colour

3. Cant reveal the make I'm afraid, I can assure you they are top quality though, I wouldn't be selling them otherwise.

4. Dont know on that one, I can get them pretty quickly from Japan though if needed, only takes a few days.

5. I'll have to find out on this one.

E-mail if you have anymore questions..

Cheers

If one of the bulbs blows is it poss just to put a stock one back in till a replacement arrives and what immprovement % wise in your opinion would the top jobbies give over a stock UK headlight????

John:flame Dev

Paul Whiffin
19-10-03, 12:07
You can just put it back to the way it was before yes, just a case of replacing the bulb and plugging it in. I've yet to see the 8000k bulbs in action so I can't answer that one unfortunately. 4500k are a huge improvement, you can really notice the difference in brightness when you have one lamp with HID and the other with std bulbs, up against a wall or something, I'll have to take some pics of mine so you can see.

Paul Whiffin
27-10-03, 18:28

27-10-03, 23:50

Unf.. argh.. what to do.. I need new bulbs.. these are what I want.. I don't think I can stretch that far.. ermm ...

hmm.

If these are that much brighter than standard bulbs, I take it if I had HID for dipped lights and 'standard' high beams, the high beams would still light up the road more than the HID on dip?

I understand the K rating are all the same brightness (so, I guess, 4500K will light up the road as much as 8000K?), the difference is the 'whiteness' of the light - so I guess everything will just look more like it's meant to look, rather than being able to see more?

I'm trying to decide a) if I am going for them (I do REALLY want some), and b) if there's any real point for me to go 8000k vs 4500k or similar.

Cheers

Paul Whiffin
31-10-03, 11:29
Most people are just going for the dipped beam setup but some have gone for both, I'd personally go for both if you can stretch to it.....

The higher number signifies a whiter light. Although the 8000k has a blue'ish tint and friends say dosent produce as much light as the 6000k. Hope this helps your decision. :)

Dude,

I cant speak form experiance but from the HID forum and other bulb sites this seems to be correct.
As a guide:
4300k = 3200 lumne output
5500k = 3000 lm
6000k = 2800 lm

Someone on the HID forum said he found the 8000k about the same brightness as the halogens??

I would like the bluer look, but brightness is more important i think, so i've gone for the 4500k kits.

Hope this helps.
Any questions give me a PM/E.

Cheers,
Stephen

Heres some more facts:

Basically from what I have read the difference in Lumina is not massively different across the range obviously less on 8000k but a more blue tinge as you get on Mercedes etc The 4500k ones are prob brighter but its quite slight from what I can see, but the 8000k being the more Prestigeous looking from what I gather

On this site there is a pic that compares a 6000k to a 4500k

No difference in brightness (if anything the 8k's are not as bright), the higher the number the "bluer" the light output.

Just fitted mine this morning. I mounted the ballast units under the headlights which works fine and helps keep the wiring out of the way.

A note to anyone fitting the bulbs into the original Jap spec plastic headlights - the rubber sealing rings on the bulbs are too big. Replace them with the smaller rings supplied.

The 4500K look really white and much better than before. I'm looking forward to going out when it gets dark :)

James.

I'm getting used to mine now and at night it's like driving around in daylight :D

They cover a nice area around the car, so there isn't any point in the foglights any more. They are also nearly as bright as the main beam, except they don't shine as far.

Cat's eyes and roadsigns are now a completely different colour and stand out a lot more.

For anyone who's thinking about getting them, I think they are worth every penny.

Added some pictures of the install here:
http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~jamesg/gallery/hid

Just to add (and I stand to be corrected), I'm not sure if they would be suitable for main beam. They take a fraction of a second to turn on (and flicker), so it would be a bit weird when flashing people.

James.
