View Full Version : Subframe bolts
These need tightening now and again apparently. What, where, and how much torque, anyone?
Got a clonk on turning and reversing I want to get rid of...

TBH mate I'd be tempted to stick the car on some ramps an give the whole underneath a check over. Could be something like a loose ARB/mount.
Just go over everything I can get at and tighten it to FT, sorta thing? Sounds easy enough :)

I had a big bolt that came off 2 weeks ago :( I believe it was located on the gearbox somewhere.
I was driving along when I suddenly heard a loud bang. It was the screw that came of, it then bounced up and down against the bottom of the car a couple of times. Lots of smoke behind the car! I thought it was my flywheel at first. I pulled over and looked under the car, lots of oil was leaking down rapedly!
Its all sorted out now, and fortunatly it wasnt anything expensive!

Try MKIV.com all the important ones are listed with settings. Some need deep sockets to reach.

My favourite type of sockets.
I'll check it out, cheers Term.

Does anybody have actual pics of these bolts from underneath? I was under the car for an hour and am still unsure of which ones are the right ones to tighten. The silly view that comes on the torque figure from the display off the manual from mkiv.com just isn't doin' it for me and I wanna' be sure before I go putting 148 ft/lbs on a bolt. Thanks all.
Mine were all tightened as part of the service.

Wanted: pics with dummy arrows to the subframe bolts. Thanks.
Here they are:

Yep, those are the ones I already have. I'm looking for pics from under the car looking up at the bolts themselves. Thanks though.
It's obvious which ones they are from the diagram isn't it? :innocent:

Nope. I'm no idiot, but from underneath, there's a lot of bolts and I just want to be sure before I go torqueing anything to 148 ftlbs. That's all. I'm pretty sure of where they are in the rear, but the fronts are a different story. I was only under the car for about 45 mins today and that was while trying to brake free some frozen-@ss exhaust bolts.

The sub frame is unmistakable. It is not difficult to identify the bolts that hold it to the car. Sorry no pics.
Just tightened my front subframe bolts. According to the diagram there's 6 bolts on each side, I can only see 5.
3 bolts on the steel subframe and 2 nuts on the aluminium subframe which requires the deeper socket .
Out of the 10 , 7 of them needed tightening.
I was going to check the engine mount aswell which goes through the aluminium subframe but I've done a search I cannot find the torque setting.
Did it solve your problem OR has the knocking come back?

I still need to tighten mine. Been out of the country for the better part of the last two months. I'm still looking for the actual pictures (digital stills) from underneath the car that points to the subframe bolts. I know I've seen them online somewhere, but not sure if it was this site.

I've still got the metallic knocking when I brake, only notice it when I'm slowing down to stop.
I changed the stabiliser bar links, went out for a drive and the knocking wasn't there initially but as I drove back it started again. Must be something to do with the suspension.

They're are so obvious, you cannot miss them. I put the front of the car up on ramps, safer that way - wouldn't want to pull it off a jack.

If that's aimed at me then yes it cured it and no, nearly two years and lots of abude down the line, no knocking at all
I got a proper garage to do it though, I didn't have the under-car access to impart the required leverage. And I snapped my Halfords extension bar ;)

Well boys, I went to the auto-skills shop (military terminology for a garage where we can use the lifts and a complete set of tools) to tighten these buggers today and they are closed for summer vacation. F*ckin NATO civilians. They never work. So I've found a Toyota dealer/shop in the Netherlands via a buddy to do it for me, along with a four-wheel alignment. Dropping the car off Monday morning, although I'm probably going to look up every little knock and creek I can think of and get everything tightened while it's up on the lift.

So a success story there....

Same here :(
