Ello all

Ive just thrown out the standard speakers and put somthing better in. Next is a MP3 head unit, probably a kenwood but not sure yet, what I want to know is there a connector loom you can get that connects the headunit to the standard wireing without me having to cut anything. Ive seen some at halfords for allsorts of applications but none for a supra, closest was for an MR2 NON active speaker, will this fit?

Also, the standard amp, I would like to replace it, any suggestions on what I should get, 4 channel I presume, sensible prices, or should I just use the new head unit to power the speakers?

Either way, Im lothe to cut the standard wireing.

Any info please.

Hi John, the ISO adapter bypasses the stock amp. Basically if you take out the dash and the stereo you will get :-

A flying female plug from the left side goes into the back of the stereo.
There are also two male sockets down there with flying leads from the right hand side of the dash plugging into them.

To fit an aftermarket system the two leads from the right plug into the ISO adapter and job done!

Have a look at the link below, it may help...... I've just fitted a Kenwood MP3 and it is fantastic :)

Any idea where I can buy the ISO connectors?

I used the Halfrauds one. Steve C is right - it really is a peice of cake. The hardest part is the "nuts and bolts" bit of getting the stereo into the stock hole.

Your Halfords store should have a booklet guide that will tell you which adapter you will need for the Supra. It may also be applicable to other models and the MR2 non-active speaker thingy does ring a bell.

I went to a different branch of halfords today, they had a lot more audio stuff, Got the connector that their chart says is for the supra, got home, stripped the dash down, and its not even close!

On my UK spec car, I have one connector that goes into the multi changer control and one that goes into the head unit, which is the one with all the speaker (amp?) wires and power. its a 2 x 10 if memory serves but has much smaller pins than the adaptor I got.

Any Ideas please??

I think if you trace the stock harness back from the head unit deeper into the centre console you should find it breaks into the two seperate connectors that you plug your Halfords adapter harness into.

To repeat what Steve mentioned earlier, the ISO block will bypass the amp and power the speakers directly.

No idea about the multi changer connection.

OR

The whole wiring setup is different for a car with the amp / multichanger, but I don't think so. Several people on the BBS have used the Halfords adapter harness successfully.

Maybe the two connectors you are looking for are laying in the centre console, unconnected.

John, have a look at the second picture on the link I posted, that is the top of the harness on the left hand side behind the stereo that goes down to the amp under the passenger seat.

The flying lead goes into the back of the head unit and is non standard. You need to ignore that and also unplug the two leads that come from the right side of the dash and go into the two sockets on my photo. These are the two that go into the ISO adapter, bypassing the stock amp.

I've no idea about the changer, but I guess you are binning that as you've got an MP3 head unit now.

A few people have got the Kenwood KDC-M9021 and are very happy with it - me included :-)

This is getting beyond a joke!!!

Investigated a little more today, the halfords adaptor wont fit the plug that goes into the head unit, nor does it change into different plugs further into the dash.

However........

Its a perfect fit for 2 of the 3 plugs that go into the stock amp under the seat. although looks like 2 of the rear speaker wire pins are in wrong holes on one plug of adaptor.

Somebody please explain whats going on before I pull any more hair out!!!!

I realise the wires are more than likely the amp output and power input and the third different plug is probably feed from the head unit. I really dont want to have to rewire from the amp up to the head unit (and back again if I want to use a new amp in the future) and cutting stock wireing is out.

All I want is an adaptor that fits the plug that goes into stock head unit.

Am I asking too much?

Any help please

Above is a very bad sketch of how I understand all stock systems to be wired (it's how mine was, Jap 6 speaker). Look at this in conjunction with the pictures on my web page, link in a previous post.

Photo 2 shows sockets 2 & 3 and flying lead 1 taken in situ on the left side inside the centre console.

These three connectors are one end of a harness that goes down to the under-seat amp, emerging as plugs 4 & 5. These plug into the amp. The amp has a power feed from under the carpet, plug 6.

The complete harness can be seen in photo 4.

To fit the ISO adapter you unplug the leads plugged into 2 & 3, these then plug into the ISO adapter which will then fit into the back of you ISO compatable head unit.

Sockets 2 & 3 are a 2x6 and a 4x6, plugs 4 & 5 are a 2x6 and an 8x6. The ISO adapter should have sockets that match sockets 2 & 3.

Is your's definatly very different, this seems to be the normal setup. Do you have the standard head unit and amp?

thankyou! :) :) :)

makes more sense now, those 2 plugs on the left I thought were something different, they look important and wires go into main loom and head up behind the speedo.

I shall try again tomorrow.

Thanks very much Steve you patience is appreciated!

No problem John, I hope you finally get it sorted.

If however, you find your speedo only changes when you turn the volume knob then please send all queries to M.Mouse, c/o 14 The Big Parade ;)
