DIY engine swap

I did mine myself. Although I did it the other way to JustGav I lifted the engine and gearbox out throught the top. I did the conversion in a weekend with the car on axle stands. It's not too bad a job for those handy with the tools, it's just an involved one. I think Jezzybabes is in the middle of doing a write up on the entire swap which will be a great help to you.

A little tip. If you are going to do it the way I did, make sure the engine crane has enough reach!! Also check and double check everything, it doesn't take much to miss something important, it may take longer but it's better safe than sorry.

I highly recommend a copy of CJ's repair manuals to help you out while doing the swap.

The NA 5 spd will bolt straight up to the TT engine, but as you probably know the 5spd is ok on stockk TT power but cannot take more power than that through it for long, or so I am led to beleive from discussions on here.

thanks jim!!

Yeah i think i will be fine with the mechanical side of it, but what is involved with the conversion with electrics? i know that a new tacho is needed (is this litterally just taking the old one out and putting a new one in?) and the ecu and harness. but what else?

Yes, the dial cluster from a TT is an easy swap job, the ecu harness is straight forward, although quite tricky to feed down through the firewall.

One of the two connectors that go in to the fuse box will need swapping, but this is again a straight forward job, just take the one off the NA loom and connect it to the TT loom. easy! just make sure that it is done properly, as one of the wires is a feed for the starter motor, and the car will not start without it!

Some people will say that you should swap over the entire fusebox instead, but this is just overkill IMO.
