I'm going to the dvla tomorrow to change my plate from J666PAN to B19UNS what would be the best thing to do with the old plate if i intended to sell it on?

Have it placed on retention with the DVLA. Then the records will show that the VRM is still owned but not currently assigned to a vehicle. You'll be issued with a retention certificate which you'll need for when you seel the plate and pass on title. I think.

My mate just did this - think it cost him somewhere around £100 (can't remember the exact figure but it was that +/- £20).

You might have one problem though. I thought you had to arrange in advance to put the number on retention. My mate did it because he's gone to Miami for a couple of years - and he had to delay the sale of his car while he waited for the paperwork to come through from DVLA.

Yours might be different - since you are assiging another number to your car - but I suspect not. I have a feeling you should probably have arranged with the DVLA to put the current registration on retention, which would have got you a normal reg. Then you could have assigned your new private reg to the car.

I have a feeling you're going to find out the local registration office cannot put your old number on retention when you assign your new one.
