BPU or APU for Track Days?

Hi all,

After doing quite a few drag days, it's always been an aim to go APU. However, I've just done a track day, and it's evident that I need to first spend some dosh on wheels, suspension, calipers, etc. However, after this, would you recommend that single is still the way to go for tracks (e.g. a track such as Bedford Autodrome)? Would I notice much difference?

NB I'm thinking of a GT4088, so want to make sure I get a trubo that is not just massive lag and massive power reall meant for the drag strip, but something that is useable on the track.

Cheers,

Ben.

I'd go GT35R, as you'll have more response and low down torque for the more technical circuits and still have considerable top end speed down the straights.

This is the turbo I have fitted on mine and it gives similar low down response to a stock TT, but with a huge amount more mid to top end. See my garage for full spec.

Depends on the type of circuit, if its twisty then a smaller turbo would be better, but for a larger airfield setup maybe a slightly bigger turbo like a BL67.

With a PHR stage 1 the only cars at RAF Marham that were quicker on the main straight were other Supras with bigger turbos.

Spend the money on proper suspension, wheels, tyres and brakes first, you'll go MUCH quicker for FAR less money than going single. 6k on the suspension, brakes and tyres will gain you more lap time than a stockish or badly prepped rolling chassis on a single.

cant argue with "The Man" :D

Ben was saying in his first post that he was going to do the suspension, brakes, etc. first. I certainly wouldn't advise any different. Definitely sort out the handling and braking before upping the performance

Yeah, definitely could see that I first need to look at those areas and agree with you Chris. I've upgraded a lot of the braking system and was pleased with the results. Lots of time on the track and not much brake fade at all. However, there was still quite a bit of roll in the car, so suspension is next, along with bucket seats to keep me where I'm supposed to be (was having to push knee on door and elbox on door to keep me in place)!

But after I've done that, was wondering what turbo to go for ... sounds like the GT4088 that I was originally thinking of might be a bit big ... ? (I suspect Bedford Autodrome will be my regular haunt).

You may find a GT35r would be wasted on a track if you are scrabbling for traction after every apex. The last thing I needed on my last trackday was another 150bhp.

When my tires warm up it hardly breaks traction, maybe some track day tires would be good for you.

Dont consider Bedford to be your local haunt, they wont let you race with the noise a single makes. Learn your car and tweak its setup with BPU while you have it, then when it goes bang go APU :) As Bignums vids show you'll beat/keep up with most serious things out there with a well setup BPU supe.

However, after going in Wez's... yum :D
