An easy way to look at it is that torqe gives you that kick in the back, that shove in ya seat that can be felt. BHP keeps ya constant at the desired speed once ya get there......well thats how i think of it:D

I tend to think of torque as the force the engine puts out per rpm so the faster it rotates the more work the torque can do and so the more total work or power.

 

Some people say things like "my punto HGT has as much torque as a porcshe boxter..." but it only revs to about 4k while a porsche is going to be more like 7-8k so they arent really comparable. A porsche could have a much shorter gear ratio then the punto for the same speed so the engine is doing more rpm and making alot more power and would be much faster.
