MOT woes

Right...

On Monday I dropped my car in to my local test centre to have it's MOT done, got a phone call in the afternoon to say it hadn't passed. It had failed on the front brakes.

So anyways i get there and ask the guy when they can take a look at what's wrong and sort it out, his reply "sorry mate, your car won't fit on our lifts. That'll be £50.35 for the MOT test." I then ask him to explain what the problem was with the brakes? "We couldn't do any investigative work" Hands my card back and says "If you bring it back within 10 working days we'll only charge you for a partial re-test" and walks off.

Now this might just be me, but if i take my car to a garage for an MOT where they may potentially have to work on the car, should they not have said to me in the beginning that they can't actually put the car on their lifts?? Or is this only in an ideal world?

Anyways so off I go to another garage up the road from where I live (who actually replaced the discs and pads in January) and ask them to take a look at it for me, and they also take the time to explain to me what the problem - chances are the binding just needs greasing and this will stop the pads from rubbing on the discs

I get a call from them this morning saying that I need to replace both front calipers, discs, pads and change the brake fluid. Would this be the norm? I do not recall any discolouration on the discs from the pads staying in contact with the brake discs.

Whats frustrating is that I haven't even done 1500 miles with these new discs and pads! Feels like wasted money now!

Rant over :D

holy crap dude, that doesn't sound so good at all.

which discs/pads was it you fitted before?

the pads were endless and the discs were just oem.

Oh yeah? How did they MOT test it without getting it up in the air then?

Anyway, who fitted your brakes.

Well that's what I thought.

The garage who have the car now are the guys who replaced them in January. They're saying they didn't spot anything wrong with the calipers back in Jan.

the car has to go up on a ramp to complete the mot as that is what its says on the new vosa database,if they didnt use the vosa computer to carry out the test then they are doing it illegally mate.go back and ask them what they did and if they followed the new mot rules coz if they didnt id be asking for my moiney back before reporting them

I think both garages are trying it on tbh, i've asked for my discs, pads and calipers back so i can get someone to have a look at them for me so i can get another point of view.

I've managed to save myself a bit of cash though for now as supra matt very kindly donated his old set of calipers.

well this is the other reason i've asked for my existing parts back, more evidence if necessary

MOT ramps have to be drive on, they may want to use a wheels free to do the brake work. is it lowered? They can be a total PITA to get on wheels free ramps, maybe they are politely telling you they don't want to do the work as it's a low car?

the car isn't lowered at all. i have had a garage advise in the past that they can't help me purely because it has the bodykit and they can't accomodate the car. but at least they were up front about it and honest.

Don't worry Jeff mate, I have a full mint set of these on my garage floor (JSPEC calipers, pads (OEM) and discs (OEM)

They came off my Supra which had done very few miles from new.

thieving baskets! :aggress: How can they check for the most basic things like wheel bearing play etc when the supra's stood on the ground??? Did the first place even give you the MOT certificate and advisory?

MOT's are a nightmare, its like mission impossible trying to find one friendly to modified jap cars, thats if your pride and joy can even fit on their ramps!! feel for you fellah and hope you get it sorted without any more grief

Yep they gave me the certificate of mot failure and the advisory, as well as the cold shoulder

got a call from the other garage a minute ago and it's all sorted now. just have to book it back in for the re-test.

will get the old parts back so am going to get those looked at.

We really do need a jap car specialist down this neck of the woods.
