Jap spec dual decat running 1.2 bar
I was just showing an AMG Merc how slooooww he was
(w.o.t. 18 psi boost) when there was a slight pop from my car
and no more boost.
The engine runs ok up to 4k rpm but not making any boost,
when the vsv's open to spin the 2nd turbo it sounds wheezy
and still makes no boost.
I imagine the exhaust side blades have disintegrated on turbo 1
turning it into a big open waste gate for turbo 2 above 4k rpm.
Anything else that could cause this ?
And can I drive to garage in NA mode without buggering
anything apart from my self esteem as I'm overtaken by
Saxo's Metro's etc ?

Check for a big IC pipe popped off before panicking!
If it was a pop more than a crunch, whine etc, then as Steviekid says could very well be an IC pipe come off. I've had both those in mine, and they are very different sounds!

Yes I though that but discounted it as the
car runs ok apart from the lack of boost.
If an IC pipe was off the air metering would
be screwed and the engine would stall?
I probably did not hear the sound of the failure
too well as I was just making the jump to light speed
and laughing at the merc - I'm laughing on the other side
of my face now:imsorry:

It still could. I had a boost leak that meant I could only get 0.5 bar at WOT with no cats, no restrictor ring and the wastegate actuator disconnected! Idle and general running was fine.
it could be an IC pipe, when mine popped off the car still ran but sounded like a 747.
If it is your turbos then see my post in the wanted parts section ;)
If the IC pipe has come off you will only be able to accelerate at the same rate as a milk float as air is escaping. If its a turbo, you will have 'some' acceleration, but no boost even though the system isn't leaking air anywhere. Idling and driving will still be possible, but try not to drive the car any real distance if you're not sure.
Turbo 2 won't be able to spool at all, even after 4k rpm. I found that out when the bearing busted in turbo 1 recently!

Yes the IC pipe had popped off, that will teach me not
to be a smartarse and take a good look before comming
to a conclusion.:search:
The charge air is metered on the pressurised side of the turbos
hence fueling remains correct!
I imagine the risk is overspooling the unloaded turbo if you
dont take it very easy.
Any way 10 minutes work put it back to rights, thanks for the
advice.
