Leaking steering rack gaiter

Morning everyone.

My Supra failed it's MOT on the above. :( Toyota (I know, I know), told me that a new one costs £1,200 :rlol:. I'm sure a second hand one would be a lot cheaper, but does the whole steering rack actually need replacing because of a leaking gaiter?

Excuse my ignorance, I know nothing of which I speak!

Ian, it'll be one of the various seals in the steering rack that will have gone, the fluid will leak out and then past the boot. You can buy replacement seals (see first image), but they are a bitch to install, usually the cheapest option is to buy a second hand or reconditioned rack.

I have a slight leak on mine, so if it gets any worse I'm also going to need a replacement rack too :(

See EPC images attached.

They're on the main road just after the turning for engine advantages Edd (if you're coming from the town centre), there's the Ford showroom, then straight after (right next to the petrol station) there's rapid fit. They seem to do a good job, taken all my previous cars there for various reasons. :) Obviously not supra specialists, but the labour rates are very good for basic work.

Wheres Rapidfit Adi? I need my MOT in 2 weeks and don't really want to take the car back to Engine Advantages.

Why is that mate? I only ask because my car is booked into EA for Tuesday. Any particular reason?

I might give Rapidfit a try...

ok well.... they are great guys and seem to know what they are on about, but...

I took the Supe for a service and MOT. Its always had a little whistle from tubby 1, but since the service its had a very loud whistle from tubby 1! Also they said it was pinking, which it was when they gave it back to me, but not when I gave it to them. They were trying to sell me an AEM ECU for god knows how much stupid money to sort it out. Theres a thread I started on that one somewhere. But obviously because mine is stock, after a couple of long runs the adaptive ECU sorted it self out.

I also had to take the Supe back to them 3 times for them to sort out a wheel bearing, and once the millage was questionable when I got it back.

I probably would take it back to them if I really had to have something specific done, but for an MOT I'd rather try someone else now.

:(

That's not good to hear mate. Think I'll reconsider taking it to them on Tuesday.

I'm also having my wheel bearing looked at as well as a strange noise when Turbo #2 kicks in. Also my MPH conversion seems to be acting up and it's affecting my PPS.

Could you recommend anywhere else mate?

Cheers

My mate works for Rapid fit in Witham so friendly MOT's here, I'd trust them with the motor any day.

Having said that I still take my car to Westfields for most stuff, I also know these guys pretty well and they probably have more hands on experience with Supra's than Rapid fit.

lol i must be blind, i just went looking for Rapid fit and couldnt find the place at all!!!

so from centre of Witham its on the left, after the EA turning, after the ford garage on the corner and then after the tiny petrol station???

I take it that if i get to the mini round-a-bout ive gone way too far...

anyone got a phone number for them? are they the same as 'Ford Rapid Fit' that i've found on yell.co.uk?

lol, from the town centre go over the bridge then it's just after the first turning on the left. Rapid fit share a car park with the petrol station.

Yes, if you've got to the mini roundabout you've gone to far!

In essence they are part of the Ford centre, just built onto the side of it.
