A lassie at my works got one. I drove it once and never want to again.
Why would you get a Saxo?? Wouldn't want to be in a crash in a Citroen either mate.....:(
H.
I had a saxo VTS before the Supra. Great fun car i would get another in a second if i could find one that hadn't been thrashed.
It out handles most cars out there and stops on a six pence, pretty good performance too, 15.08 @90 mph at the pod ;)

well wasn't really planning on crashing one. I want a hatchback with a bit of power in it, which isn't going to brake the bank.
My current clio feels like its going to tip over as soon as i go round a corner, so anything is better than that

I had a 02 plate VTR a few years back, it kept falling apart lol.... but was wicked fun, handled well with good tyres too!
I had a 3 year old VTR back in the day, owned it for 3 months and the headgasket went twice in that time, luckily it was covered under warranty but i flogged it quick sharp and bought a 10 year old MR2 instead which never let me down.

I also had a c2 vts a year ago and that was poop as well, spent more time in the garage than on the road... wouldn't recommend citroen to anyone to be fair!! When they work there ace little cars though!
I test drove a VTR when i had to get rid of the supe due to cash flow reasons last year.
Instead i opted for a £700 audi 80 which i would time and again over a saxo, it was truly truly awful.

ok, so im getting the general opinion that they arent good. Anyone have any other ideas? needs to be good on fuel (40mpg+) cheap on insurance, not slow and look resonable. got about 2 grand to spend

You won't get 40mpg + with a vtr ;) I recon an audi a3 if you can stretch to one, or a bmw 3 series e36 style - solid cars, my coupe never let me down in 40k I put on it in the year i had it :)
A couple of people have now commented about the handling being good. Maybe there was something wrong with the one I drove or it had bad tyres but the handling was appalling. I also felt the gear lever was going to come off in my hand.

Neither did mine, i had it from 0 miles up to 56000 :search:
i had a vtr back in 1999, kept it for 2.5 years. loved the little thing and still got a soft spot for them. nothing went wrong with it at all. i find people are too quick o right them off these days as they tend to compare them with ctr's and clio 187's etc but back in the day the saxo was the car.

I also had a VTS for about the same mileage; guess mine must have been a friday car as I had no end of problems with it :(
Owner of a VTR gives his opinion on the car:

It was an early VTS that I had; it had gearbox problems from day one - citroen never managed to fix it and refused to replace the box - headgasket blew, various suspension, brake and electrical problems as well. That said, it survived my not exactly light footed driving and I had it a fair few years. I think a major part of my problems was due to the dealer who serviced the car - they managed to royally screw up the BHG, and after switching dealers my brake problems also disappeared.
On the flip side of that, it handled very very well and was a nippy little motor. Back then you never really saw VTS's on the road much either :)
Saxo is a CHAVs motor!!
and?
I had one of the first west coasts in the country... basically a vtr with a 1.4 engine... even the ecu was off a vtr!
Loved every minute of driving it...regulary had it on 3 wheels round corners and it never put a foot wrong with the engine dispelled the french myth for me!
Look for good electrics and everything working... usaal signs of being thrashed and high milage stuff but for a cheap run around with a bit of poke you cant beat it!

My other half has a '52' reg VTR and nothing has gone wrong with it nice little car really to get from A-B. Remember not every saxo owner is a 'Chav' ;)

If you can stretch to 3.5k...now these little things are fun :d
Been looking at this one for a while but I just can't afford it right now. It seems like a nice example with low mileage.

just read on that thread that it gets 36mpg! From a 1.6! that is very poor. Seems that its a bit of a lucky dip as to whether or not you get problems or not.
That Clio 172 is an absolute bargain. But yes, it is well out of my price range
