I wired in my HKS fcd last night and when i was done i started the car to make sure it would still start which it did. This morning i went to start it up and it was a little low on the revs and i got a smell of fuel, once i started to drive off i noticed it was down on power quite a bit and the more throtle i gave it the worse it got. I drove slowly to the garage where i was booked in to get my cats removed and they said it got worse when the cats were removed, in the end i had to remove the FCD and try without, perfect??
What have i done wrong? i gave the FCD power from the right terminals and im pretty sure i got the right signal wire too???
I had the FCD set to dial no 9...

I wasnt happy using the supplied crimp connectors but i cant see that it would of had that effect?

A few points, you have picked the worst FCD to fit (bar the cheap ebay or similar ones). HKS has a bad rep.

Basically what you have described is your hitting fuel cut which is what the FCD is supposed to eliminate as long as the FCD is set correctly. Fule cut is hit when the ECU gets a signal that the boost has went over 1 bar (it is a safeguard to protect your engine) however if the FCD threshold is set far to low then the signal going into the FCD is then screwed up and sent to the ECU that thinks it is boosting over 1 bar and cuts your fuel.

Best FCD on the market is the Thor unit (or TRL) as it pre set to 1.25 bar but these are no longer made, next is the Greddy unit which you have to set.

Fitting instructions for both Greddy and HKS can be found on here by using the search bar at the top or go to www.mkiv.com.

flippin ell, i picked the HKS one as that was what was recommended by Whifbitz, how come i was getting a signal that boost was over 1 bar when i was below 2000rpm in 1st and 2nd?
Ive taken it out for now and the car runs perfectly with lots of power??

I have heard a lot about it even from owners off the forum. I am not saying your car will blow up lol.

The way the FCD works is the signal goes in one end, gets changed and comes out the other.

So in theory the signal going to the ECU is saying your hitting 0.8 bar of boost which is healthy for cats in (example) but when it gets to the ECU after going through the FCD the ECU thinks you are overboosting so it cuts the fuel. Thats what happened to me with the Greddy unit I had to crawl home 40 miles at 30 mph.

Does your engine warning light come on and the engine light in the right hand cluster?

i dont remember seeing them.
I have an idea of what is happening to the signal going in and commin out of the unit, do you think i might of just had the dial in the wrong position? i didn't want to play around with it!!
is the greddy one not much good either?
I just spent a bit on the Whifbitz stage 1 kit plus getting the cats fitted, i dont want to just chuck the HKS unit and fork out another £85....

To be honest mate with all FCD's apart from the Thor unit that is no longer made you have get it set and the only way to set is by doing out and hitting fuel cut, then try another setting hit fuel cut and so on till you no longer hit fuel cut up to 1.2 bar.

Did Wiffbitz fit the stuff or did you do that?

i fitted it, exactly as advised using the HKS website and a couple of photos from here.
Im certain it was done right.

Whifbitz said his restrictor ring was set to 1 bar so i guess i wont be able to get it higher with the ring in anyway??

To be honest thats the best restrictor ring. You can still get 1.2 bar but you will need a boost controller to achieve it.

so after sorting this FCD out if i was to upgrade the system further i'd install something like the greddy profec b spec boost controller and that would allow me to increase the boost further?

Yes.

However I take apart from decats you have done all the other required modsbeofr eyou go to BPU?

All the other mods?
I bought the car with what looks like a cat back exhaust system (big enough to get your arm inside!)
Ive done both decats
restrictor ring
fuel pump
Iridium plugs
(FCD) did & removed :(

You also require a new smic.

Go to the car and check the fins on it if the crumble or a brital with you running your finger along it then get it changed ASAP.

Also a boost guage go for a 60mm on and put in the air vent next to the clock. This is to keep an eye on your boost unless you already have one.

got a boost gauge in the air vent, that came with the car, gonna check the intercooler now.
