View Full Version : "Cloverfield" - new JJ Abrams movie - anyone else excited?
Seems to be the big buzz in the sci-fi world right now, film doesn't even have a proper title yet, but it's going to be a monster movie and people are suggesting links to the Chthulu mythos. Whatever, I think it looks cool - here's the offical site http://www.1-18-08.com and watch the trailer here http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/.
Oooh..... I'm in.
Some cryptic sites to spend some time on too.
http://www.1-18-08.com
Two 'photos' from the official trailer.
Oddly, there is an official denial that 'Ethan Haas' is related to the film clip (1-18-08) showing on the Apple site.
Hmm.. two ARGs to fill my days/
Can't watch the trailer from work, but the prospect of a Cthulu mythos film has me interested. Anyone read any of August Derleth or Brian Lumley books?
Have a look here:

Loads of stuff about 'Cloverfield'.
It appears that the Ethan Haas stuff may relate to a video game.
Also, on the 1-18-08 site you can move the pics around. The pic of the two girls is actually just one girl (cut the pic in half, swap sides and the match together!) and oddly, the pics move if left unattended. I thought it was me but a search reveals that, yes they do move and, weirder, it appears they are in some sort of countdown!
looks good, another film to add too the list
Wow... never heard of any of this... very excited. :)
IMDB info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/
Might be worth checking this regularly as it's sure to be updated.
I've spent a lot of time looking into this today. There are numerous site re: cloverfield. Some aren't immediately obviously linked.
Anything Haas related is a totally different thing. Nothing to do with the film and very little else out there about it.
Time will tell.
have absolutly no idea what you lot are on about. but that trailor looks cool.
is there a novel or something where i can start?
is there a novel or something where i can start?
NO! Basically what we have right now is the beginnings of an ARG (Alternate Reality Game). Hidden in that trailer are clues and hints. Already one site has been found (1-18-08.com) and others are following although how closely they are related is as yet unclear (www.slusho.jp for example. In the trailer one of the characters is drinking a Slusho drink. Slusho is also a term used to describe a certain type of 'Lost' fan.)
New sites will offer new images. These images will contain clues. They may be obvious or buried 'within' the picture (Photoshop comes in very handy). They'll be phone numbers and emails and it all gets very consuming.
I get very into the Matrix ARG to the point where I was forgetting to go to bed!
Stay away!;)
In other words, it's all the geeky aspects of Lost rolled up into a film. ;)
I used to love these things, but nowadays I think I'm just too old to be bothered. :(
Looks like one to watch..!
ttp://www.cinematical.com/2007/07/10/j-j-abrams-talks-cloverfield-ethan-haas-sites-are-bogus/ Some more light reading, though if the Ethan Haas stuff is fake, why were all the clips pulled by Paramount when they were posted on YouTube? I reckon it might be a double bluff as it were.
are got ya, like the Lost one. i gave up on that though.
I just watched the trailer... cooool!
The Haas stuff looks to be a viral campaign for a new RPG called Alpha Omega by Mind Storm Labs.
When playing the Haas game there is mention of "the beginning is the end" and IIRC Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last.
Of more interest, and related to the film clip, is Bloop or The Bloop. This is a mysterious low frequency noise recorded in 1997 by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,. Mentiond is made of the fact that if it was animal in origin it would have to have been made by an animal larger than anything currently known. Hmm... the real world co-ordinates are even more bizzare in a fiction meets reality way. It was found to be at a point not fair from the 'fictional' sunken city of the dead, Rl'yeh, home to Cthulu and created by H.P. Lovecraft.
I reckon the film will be about Cthulu rising to wreak havoc on man or, at least, it'll be about some enormous beast with a plot hanging around the real-life 'Bloop'.
Ah well, shame I wasted all that time on the Ethan Haas site! People now talking about Rampage the movie, though that would be a bit of a cop out!
Just read about the Bloop - that's pretty damn cool! I'm definitely hoping for a Cthulhu film though it might be wishful thinking.
Btw, this guy *really*likes Cthulhu hellric.over-blog.com/categorie-783053.html
Update:
JJ Abrams, producer of this film was a panellist at Comic-Con today. He showed the first teaser poster and revealed nothing more about the film except that there will be a full trailer and some other stuff over the next six months.
Cue hundreds of p1553d off ARG fans!
Here is the teaser poster:

Check out the latest news here - www.cloverfieldnews.com. You can see that poster with a number of different headings, alll of which have which have already been registered as sites. They include 'Monstrous,' 'Terrifying' and 'Colossus.' Also the Slusho site is fully working, though it doesn't really give much away.
This does look good, my scifi sense is tingling :) Shame it's aeons away :( I hope it doesn't get hyped to death. I've seen a trailer where it's someone with a video camera at a house party and then bad things start happening outside with some serious roaring going on at the horizon...
I also found out about the bloop thing some months ago via a couple of links off a webcomic site, listened to it, very strange.

It seems like it will be similar to the film "signs". With a personal angle at a national crisis. Can't wait. :)
UPDATE:
I forgot to mention that there is a new trailer up if anyone is still interested.

cheers for that, I'm looking forward to this. :)
JJ Abrams didnt mean much to me at first. I thought it was all about a giant monstrous Smurf. But now I've sorted my Abrams from my Abrahams, I must say this looks pretty promising.
4 days to go :) cant wait :D
I can. I've seen the monster. Looks pap. Hey ho.
and no-one except those involved in the film know what the monster is :)

Wrong!
If you know where (and how) to look you'll find it. My heart sank when I saw it.
I'll give you a clue. It's not www.google.com with a search for '19yr old girls'.

lol Redm ,that was pretty funny actualy, but do give us a clue ;)
Okay. Think laterally. Forget 'the film'.
Also, don't forget that the film isn't out for, I think, another three weeks over here. So, we can all get proper spoiled by the US sites that'll pour over every detail so that we'll feel like we've seen it before we see it.
It's not that whale thing that's been doing the rounds for a few months is it? That was debunked a while back now.
and it def isnt Godzilla .
Don't want to read it so as not to spoil anything but AICN has review ed it here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35236

Harry seems to like it.
I suppose I'd better watch it as soon as I can before all those Americans post up pics of the monster everywhere.
Better not spoil the surprise. ;)
So finally went to see this today after some 8 months of waiting. Not as bad as some people have said, but certainly not as good as everyone else seems to make out. Too much of a love story for my liking and just a bit average. Not particualrly scary or exciting with the exception of a couple of bits. Verdict: meh.

I also went to see it tonight. Not a bad film, but what a crap ending!!

I feel the same, but what do you expect from the guy behind Lost. Feel a bit cheated.

Just like Lost then! Typical
I'll still go and see it though!
There are two bits which I don't want to give away here but which I didn't notice until I read about them on the net when I got home. First is in the video shot at Coney Island, the second is right at the end, after all the credits.
I can see why so many people complain of motion sickness. If there was ever a candidate for "most likely to have a second part" this would win hands down.
My mates have been hyping this movie for months... but then they are Lost fans and i'm not. I was not exactly blown away. Meh indeed.

Nice to see other people with less than glowing praise for this movie :) I went onto the Empire forums and it reads like they are all simultaneously sucking JJ Abrams off...
I'm more excited by the teaser trailer for the new Star Trek movie he's doing that was shown before the film!
i loved it, very good
Showed what would probably happen in new york if something like that happened
very true to life if you like

:yeahthat:
I loved it! Great film, left me wanting so much more!
Another two thumbs up from me - thought it totally lived up to the hype. The monster's the scariest creation I've seen since HR Giger's alien.

What are these two bits you speak of then?
Saw it last night, I too missed anything after the end credits. Thought it was good, but was disappointed with the ending (just like with the last film I watched too, I am Legend).
why were you disapointed with the ending? its obvious how it ends from the opening paragraph :)

What was the opening paragraph? Did it explain WTF the monster was and WTF did it come from?
This bit explains the Coney Island scene:

This reveals the hidden message at the end of the credits:

I'm glad I haven't seen it and clicked on this thread without spoiler alerts.

I went and watched this last night and was quite impressed...
It was enjoyable, only 80 mins long and left me asking losts of questions... in no way a cheesy hollywood blockbuster... just how I like movies :)
It certainly wasn't the best film I've seen recently but very entertaining and different.

if you took part in any of the viral campaigns when they where out you would know the answer to those questions :)

SPOILER ALERT!
***************
Its god zilla, with blair witch (1st one) style of filming nothing new, just better visuals thats all. (Crossed with Aliens, style of spidering things).
Lame tacky jokes throughout and blatent shameless plugs to Nokia and other £££ contributors.
Its a £££ making film thats all.....worth a watch if your bored....(i was lol, oh and its rainning!).
IMO of course lol, everyone 2 there own.

He couldn't get a signal and his battery ran out - not exactly great product placement for Nokia. The camera used throughout (onscreen at least) was a Panasonic, but I didn't even notice that, just read it afterwards. And the main drink featured in the movie - Slusho - is made up. Can't say I really noticed any product placement... but maybe I'm an advertisers dream and I picked up on it all subconciously. It wasn't exactly in the same league as Transformers on that front though was it!
*oh I think they broke into a Dr Pepper machine at one point - but didn't drink any

i thought it was really good, captured the way people would actually react if a huge b*stard monster came and attacked the town
**************Major Spoiler Alert****************
Its not godzilla its a creature thats been dorment for 1000's of years.
Basically at the end of the movie you see something falling into the water. Noone really got what it was but in an interview it was said that it was a satellite falling to earth. When this satellite hit under the water it released the monster along with some other fish. There was mention of a fish that had been thought to be extinct for 1000's of years being found. Same goes with the big guy. I don't know how much truth is in this but it was also said that the satellite that fell was owned by the japanese company that Rob was just about to leave to work for lol. Someone also said that the company was actually digging for new minerals or something when the monster was released and that the satellite falling was just a coincidence.
In another interview it was said that the monster was actually quite young and that the reason it was going nuts was because it was taking a temper tantrum coz it couldn't find its parents.
I enjoyed the movie but i really think that lost guy should find another profession. He thinks he is being clever when he comes up with all this cryptic stuff but he hasn't got a clue how to do it properly. Same thing happened with lost, i mean how many times has he changed his mind in that show lol.
