View Full Version : Can a repsray damage an engine???

Hi all,

This sounds like a silly question I know, but I have a customer who has just had his car resprayed following some vandalism damage. Since picking the car up, he's noticed that the car is not running as well as it was and is now almost at the point of not running at all.

The garage is not accepting any liability for this as they claim the engine wasn't touched (this could be feasible as they only do paint spraying) and the insurer is of the opinion that the car must have had a pre-existing problem. However, the garage did manage to spray the engine bay (which they admit to and will rectify) so could this be the cause of any problems?

Has anybody heard of anything like this before or have any thoughts / opinions?

Just get the MAF reset - im sure that will be the issue :)

Would they not have to remove the engine to spray the bay to a good standard ??

If was running when it got there, then it should run afterwards.
A independent mechanic should be asked to take a look.

Very very unlikely that it could cause a problem, as said depending on the car and intake filtration, there is a slim possibility that somehow the AFM hot wire could have got contaminated by spray or dust which could cause running problems.

this happened to my car when i was respraying it, the first time it did it i crapped myself, basically cos all the car is doing is starting up moving 10 metres then switching off you very quickly shit the plugs up, it happened twice to mine while preping for the respray

engine is probably full of pud dust..LOL but respraying should not damage the engine unless you fill it full of paint!!

I heard a story like this with an Escort Cosworth - turns out the bodyshop had taken it for a few spirited drives - worth checking that the mileage wasn't loads higher than before it went it.
