Strange painting on cylinder head?

At work today we received back a K series cylinder head from Lotus cars. Strangely it had what looks like cave drawings in orange paint all around the side. Does anybody know of a reason why this is done? Pic attached

its an extra mm of protection on the weak parts standard on all lotus cars. rumour has it that Fiat has employed a simular methord however their engines seem to be fully painted.
