hi there everyone just got me a nice stock black supra, loving the car but dont know where to start when it comes to selecting some wheels for it. There so many choices, will the width really affect the ride that much. Any suggestions or comments welcome i know the choice of wheels is up to me but i really dont know where to start or what will look good.

cheers guys and gals. Carlos

Best using the search button at the top and browsing and seeing what you like. Stock wheel will always offer the best handling. 18's are ok as long as you go for correct offset and 19's can make the cars handling rubbish. I had 19's on mine and went to 18's and difference was brilliant.

If handling is everythign to you stay with stock wheels and just get them refurbed, and keep to a stock suspension and do not lower(do a search for Chris Wilson suspension), end off.

First of all welcome to the club

If you want the best handling, then go for a set of 17" with as close to stock offset (+50) as possible. Anything over 18" and the handling/ride quality starts to suffer.

Front; go for either 8", 8.5" or 9" widths

Rear; go for either 9", 9.5" or 10" widths

The rears should generally be 1" wider than the fronts. eg. 18x8.5 front, 18x9.5 rear

The correct PCD (very simply the spacing of the wheel nut holes) for the Supra is 5 x 114.3.

Offset is also very important as this also effects the handling and ride quality. Always make sure that any wheels you chose will fit over the brakes, especially important if you have the larger 4 pot/2pot Supra brakes fitted.

Go for a decent set of lightweight wheels from one of the premium brand names, as the quality, durability and finish is far better than the cheap multitude of Thai or Malaysian made copies that are now so popular on the market.

Here are a few links to some of the best Japanese wheel brands, if I can help with any more info or prices please let me know.

Excellent info there Nic, I shall copy and paste that info somewhere for future reference as I've never been sure on correct size / width / PCD etc.

The only other thing was offset. For each size wheel what is the min / max you should have? (and how does the minimum difer if you have j-spec or UK breaks?)

Guest Chumpalot

sorry to lightly hijack your thread but the comment about handling when going to 19s scared me a bit. Does it really suffer that much? if so then in what way?

I pick up the car tomorrow and I've gone from 17" Khans to 19" Vortex Rs... obviously i'll be taking it easy to let the new tyres bed in but I would have thought handling would of (if anything) improved what with the wider rears?

Grateful for any info/advice  :)

cheers

Dave

The offset (and disc of the wheel) needed to clear the bigger brakes, varies depending on the design of the wheels. The problem area is usually between the outer face of the front 4 pot calipers and the inner edge of the spokes. Deep dish wheels or wheels with thicker spokes will obviously be closer to the caliper outer face.

Generally you will need an offset of between +35 and +50 on the front, but as I say this will vary depending on the wheel design, wheel width and what offsets the wheels are available in. The lower the offset number the more clearance from the calipers you will have and the wider the wheels will sit on the car (ie. closer to the wheel arch).

Most of the Japanese branded wheel manufacturers advise the best sizes and offsets to suit the Supra, so if anyone needs info, please feel free to pm me for advice.

The suspension geometry was designed to suit the stock 17" wheels, using tyres with bigger tyre aspect ration (tyre wall height).

The suspension geometry and subsequently the performance of the suspension will be effected with larger radius wheels, 17" is the ideal for handling, 18" a compromise in terms of looks and handling. 19" wheels will need a narrower tyre wall height to keep the rolling radius the same, this will also effect the ride quality.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the larger brakes which are fitted to all of the UK Supra's and some of the J spec cars.

Not all wheels clear these larger brakes so you have to bear this in mind.

You may want to upgrade to the larger brakes too if you don't already have them. :)
