My runaround is due for its MOT and as usual I do a once round to make sure she will pass but I have noticed a potential problem

I have a cracked windscreen - what will cause me to fail the MOT?

Is it whether or not the crack is within your vision (this crack is right at the bottom i.e. it is below the windscreen wipers.
And is there a limit on sixe - i.e the crack cannot exceed 10 inches etc?

Any info that can prevent a retest will be greatly appreciated!!

Lee.

if its not in the swept area ie not cleared by the wipers then its
up to 40mm diameter damage is acceptable. anything above that and it fails. in the swept area its 10mm diameter.

New windscreen time then :(

My windscreen in the Supra has one too which won't pass :( Wonder what my insurance companies going to think?

Thanks for saving me a wasted MOT appointment - much appreciated.

Are you sure?

I thought they could only fail a windscreen if the crack or damage is over 10mm and in "area A" of the windscreen which is the area directly infront of the driver

I THINK I MIGHT BE WRONG ON THIS:love: this is what i got on the internet. but will have to check my vosa book when i get back to work.

WINDSCREENS

Includes all items affecting the driver's view of the road: the condition of the windscreen, the wipers and washers.

Chips or cracks in the windscreen directly in front of the driver, in the area swept by the wiper blades, are acceptable if they are less than 10mm in diameter. In the rest of the swept area, up to 40mm diameter damage is acceptable.

Official stickers (any used in connection with road enforcement, security or crime prevention matters) that are not readily removable are only a reason for rejection if they restrict the driver's view.

Washers and wipers

operation
extent of area swept by the wipers
condition of the wiper blades.

Correct, area A is roughly the distance between either side of your steering wheel.

lol yeah no chance with the Supra windscreen but might be ok then with this? The crack is below where the wipers rest. By the wording of that above from the internet it would seem I was OK.

I'll get a local garage to just look at the windscreen and ask whether he will pass it or fail it. :)

Cheers.

Both my Supra and my daily drive have cracks on the drivers side of the windscreen.

The Supra's one is so low that although it's in the windscreen wiper sweep area, all you see behind it is the bonnet, so they let that one go.

My daily drive has a 10mm crack right in my vision, but I don't really notice it. They gave me an advisory for it and simply said "it'll probably grow before next MOT, so you'll have to change it anyway". That was back in March and it hasn't grown a smidge yet :d
