View Full Version : My little summer project
Looks like the sups on the back burner for the summer.:)
I'm planning on having some fun with the 73 vw bug and hopefully get it out on knockhill a few times. This is my list so far for the engine plus I want to fit some weber 44IDF's , electric fuel pump, electronic ignition and a full flow oil system. Hopefully be pushing at least 140hp so should give some scoobies a fright on the take off. LOL

Got the adjustable rear suspension sitting in the garage to go on along with camber compensator bar and ARB but at least the brakes are all done now.
Its then gonna need new wings, door, bonnet, front & rear aprons and a respray.:)
All good honest fun.(it will just look like a stock bug too):eyebrows:
Mike
Put the Porsce in it mate. You know you wanna. :eyebrows:

:) Its a bit on the heavy side for a bug and a tight squeeze. I do have an engine out of a vw 411 sitting that was designed alongside the Porsche 914/6 motor but they're hard to get parts for. Great fun tho, seen some bugs running 280hp with them. Absolutely fecking mental.:d

280bhp BUG?? fooking hell Hope they used spring washers and locktight on ALL bolts holding the car together..LOL
280bhp BUG?? fooking hell Hope they used spring washers and locktight on ALL bolts holding the car together..LOL
LOL, they have to weld in a roll cage to stop the body flexing on hard launches. 140hp will be mad enough for me they only weigh in about 740kgs and should be around the 5sec mark to 60.:D
why not stick in a scooby engine... been done. That or a rotary.... :D
Nah, cant bring myself to put a scooby motor in PITA routing coolant hoses then fitting a rad somewhere up front. I like the vw engines and carbs especially the induction noise.
Sounds intresting m8
I'm gonna be busy LOL. Its in for an MOT the morn I hope it passes so I dont need to SORN it come August. Then the strip down begins.

Might have come across a VW camper with one of these in on the M27 recently. It was absolutely flying past Mercs, Bm's and such. FasF

I think you may be onto something with the rotary LOL:D

Some freinds of mine have made an electric beetle to drag.
13.99 1/4 so far, after quicker this year.

If I had the money I'd like to put one of those in a Bug.
Good luck with the project mate and keep us posted! Have you got any photos to show??

No pics just yet, It failed its MOT on Monday on a front ball joint so its now officially off the road. The engines ordered and I managed to get the height adjustable torsion bar arms on before heading back offshore.
When I get back I'll be dropping out the engine/box and the rear bodywork so I can get the chassis cleaned up and the new box mounts fitted.
Well finally home from work yesterday and made a start today. It's gonna need a little welding but I think in general evrythings fairly solid.
I'll drop out the box so I can get the angle grinder wire brush in more places and fit some new mounts. The whole chassis will get treated then black hammerite then black stonechip.

Found a big crack in here where one of the inlet manifolds had been rubbing and thunping the bodywork.
60256
My next project, stripping the old engine down ready for something (dunno what for yet but it'll be ready LOL):)
60257
looks like a bit of work there... good luck! keep us up-to-date.
Nice car Mike. I refurbished a whole beetle 'shell' approx 3-months ago and it took the best part of 150-hours of work to prep and paint the shell. The beetle's are bloody difficult to prep, fill and repair as they are similiar to tin-cans with dints.
The end product was amazing and we put wide arches, sills and a spoiler and turned it in to Herby.
Great project (great thread too) and good luck mate;)

Cheers guys.
Sounds like a good job you done there mate. Sure is alot of work in doing them right, five years ago I pulled the body off the chassis and that was a summer of work with heater channels, floor pans and inner wing repairs. Now I'm catching up with all the bits I should have done back then LOL.:)
Managed to get on abit further recently so here are a few pics.
62664
New bumper support panel welded in.
62666
Another bumper panel welded.
62665
62669
Really need to get this cleaned up and back in on the chassis forks just so I can get the car rolling again.
62668
Bit of a difference from the previous pics with all the rust.
All the chassis will get sprayed with black stonechip and the bodywork underneath will get grey stone chip over the gray I've been painting on.
The gray paint is meant to be really good stuff, POR 15. Takes a week for it to come off your skin. I'm also using POR 15 Metal ready which is a Phosphoric acid with Zinc that treats the metal leaving a gray/white surface. Only time will tell though.:)
Here's a link if anyones interested

Keep finding rot when I decide to poke about.
Still waiting on the rear apron for welding, the engine is built but not with me yet. Loads more work than I bargained for anyway. LOL.
Cheers

Is coming along nicely mate, good job.
Woohoo Christmas has come early.:) Lots of stuff arrived today so now I can make some real progress.

64017
Huge inlet valves and dual springs look great, the spark plug size is weird in that its a good bit smaller than normal so i'll need to look into what type is used. Just to get a gasket kit really and steal bits and pieces off the old motor. Oh, carbs and an exhaust will come in handy.
Cant wait to fire this up although I'm nervous.:D

Nice one, completely missed this until now!
Thanks mate, The threads been left to disappear a few times just because nothings been getting done really until recently. I'll be glad when the bodywork is done and it's on the way back together I'm running out of space. LOL
Quick update:-
Been working solid on it for the last week and a half and finally the wheels are back on.
All the chassis is back together now after a clean and paint. Passenger side driveshaft seal had started leaking but I'll forgive it(34year original):)
Other than that the new long travel balljoints were fitted on the front for the lowered suspension and now the whole chassis needs some black stonechip. Oh and now the bodywork / respray begins.

I'm just catching up on this thread and I have to say that you have done a real good job there Mike.

Thanks very much mate, must admit its good to see it at this stage but i'll be glad to see the bodywork complete now that the weathers starting to turn colder.
Cheers:)

Mike
So when do you think you will have the whole thing complete then Mike?:)
I'm aiming for november for first mot as long as i use my weber 34 ICTs to run in the motor. 700 odd quid is alot to pay for the 44idfs but will be worth it in the long run. I've a little bit of welding to do on the door posts first then get everything painted and finally the motor fitted.
Cheers
Mike
Another wee update:- Been trying to prep and paint this thing in 10 days before I need to go away to stupid France on a course.
Anyway heres how she is, been at it constantly since last Wed.
66167
Both door posts had to be cut apart and welded up due to lots of rot and they're double skinned. Total PITA but worth it. Been using the old rear valance for scrap metal and fabricating new sections. Times are hard LOL:)
66168
66169
Stupid wire feed on the MIG kept slipping so its a touch on the rough side. Nice and strong tho.
66170
Been using Lechler Green TI primer for the first time, great stuff if things are abit rough to start off with. Built in guide coat apparantly but nothing to get excited about.:d
66171
66172
66173
66174

This is todays effort, 3 coats of the lovely 2K + how to make a complete mess of your garage and turn everything orange. including me. LOL

So far i'm well chuffed, got a couple of runs to fix but they should rub down.
Now for the doors, bonnet and wings. sigh:(
Mike
Hello peeps, not posted here for a while but still the project goes on.
Anyway I've built the engine and just got it fitted last week after a small problem with the clutch plate binding on the release bearing guide:( Easy fix though but worrying at the time seeing as the the engine wouldn't turn when bolted up.
Most of the bodywork is complete apart from flattening, polishing and undersealing.
69011
69012
These were a pain to go on, took me an hour with the 1st one due to the ring compressor slipping sideways. Your kinda working with it backwards on these engines pushing the barrel over the piston instead of the piston into the block.
69013
69014
Nice 1700lbs clutch plate, pedal feels suprisingly light:cool:
69016
Goodies still to go on:-
69017
Exhaust system arrived today hot off the welding bench. Cant wait to hear it.
69015
Twin dual choke weber 44 idfs, I'll save the trumpets for the track maybe;)
Hoping to have it almost complete very soon but i'm getting nervous as I know I'll have to fire her up sometime.:)
Hi all, another bit of an update. Its getting there now just a few odds and sods and niggles to iron out.

This was after a week of flattening and polishing.
Heres the best bit so far,
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v640/mikemajorek/?action=view¤t=MOV00076.flv
My starter is struggling like feck to turnover the engine but its gets there with two batteries. Apparantly it'll get better once the engine is run in. Anyway its very loud even scared the g/f when I revved it LOL.:d
Cant wait to get it on the road.:)
Very cool Mike, that looks like a lot of fun. Your really gettin there with the polishing too.
Looking good!
Dave
Cheers:) Really looking forward to it being finished now, shouldnt be too long. I think its gonna scare a few folk with the noise the vid doesn't do it justice.:d

Great project mate only just seen this, I started off with a beetle spent 2 years building mine from scratch was a 1972 1641cc with dual 40 webbers great fun to build and the vw crowd are mad.
Few pics of my old one

Wow, thats an exhaust and a half. Nice bug did the build go smoothly or were you like me being constantly suprised by the amount of rot they can hide? I've always thought about a set of porsche wheels for mine they give a nice wide look.
Cheers:)

I wanted to make something different for it and it was a faze round here for having big oval exhausts :)
There was no end to welding mate found gas welding it was the easyest in the end as the metal was so thin the mig would just blow no end of holes, fully stripped the shell and floor pan, rewelded a new nose on the floor pan where the front cross member bolts on, loads of patches on the floor pan, the body had new nose on the front, i made new skins for the bottoms of the doors new rear quarter pannels welded in & heater channels, removed all the handles and fitted solenoids, fitted a ford probe interior. Ended up getting a full apprentiship in welding and fabrication and working in this game for 8 years because of this car :D

Loads of work mate but then if you were to think about it all at the same time you'd sicken yourself. You were brave taking on a framehead I've not got the skill or the welder to to that LOL:).
Is it still on the road?

yer was a big job mate wont be going that far into restoration projects again :) I sold it about 4 years ago No idea what happened to it, crunch line for me was spending 2.5k on a rebuilt engine then gettin gmy arse kicked my a sprinter van  sold it for 5k an bought a 300zx twin turbo to cheer my self up :D

LOL, it happens although i thought the 1641 with dual 40's would have been fairly nippy. I used to be stock 1585cc with twin 34 icts pushing a massive 60 HP:D. This new motor is going to be a little different i reckon, scoobies better watch out or more likely the box is going to fail big style:)

it was fairly quick but the box was standard and 80mph was pushing it for max speed lol
what box are you going to run?

em, stock 1300 for now apparantly they will take 150hp but drag starts will kill it. Wont go much past 100mph as i'll be running out of revs but should be fun getting there:d
If i kill it i have plans for a stronger box with a longer 4th ratio for cruising. We'll see how things pan out.:)
Oh well back to work the morn again still no MOT yet:( but its not far away now.

Few finishing off bit to do like polishing the rest of the wheels and fitting the chrome spinners. Need to underseal the floorpans black then add some more grey to the arches. If i'd more time and paint I would have liked it to be all orange under there.
But the to do list is finally into single figures:)
Its going in for the big MOT tomorrow and i'm not looking forward to it. Been checking stuff over and pretty confident its gonna be fine but the starter is playing up on warm starts barely turning over. I think it must be the compression increasing once its warmed up.
Would like it pass anyway seeing as the sups burst its rad.:(
Well here it is.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/mikemajorek/DSC00146.jpg
Passed MOT last monday no probs. Had to lift the front up about half an inch due to the wing trying to reshape my tyre but all ok now.
Done around 130 mile and its freeing off abit now just the other 870 to go:) Feels nippy although just revving to 3.5k the now and feck me the noise from the carbs and exhaust is something else.:D
Cheers
Mike
