View Full Version : Gas or charcoal?
This probably is going over old ground, but as its sort of coming up to summer, we in our office, have been discussing barbecues.
I for one believe there is only one way to bbq, and that's with traditional charcoal and the skill of getting the food cooked properly, as nature intended.
My two colleagues on the other hand, think the 'benefit' of an 'outdoor cooking grill' heated by gas is the way to go. Yes you do have the convenience of instant and variable heat, but doesn't that take the fun out of the whole experience. Maybe they should just stick the food in the oven! Heathens!
I know that when you're catering for large numbers, like at JAE, you may need the gas, but its just not the same.
Anyway, I would like your opinions! I would like to add a poll, but it doesn't work on me old Mac!
I have a gas one for convenience. They both take just as long to clean - thats the biggest pain in the ass!
I have charcoal for the same reasons as you... it just doesn't seem right with gas. If you are cooking for a lot of people though gas is the only way to keep the food on supply... yum.
I found it tastier when its cooked on charcoal ! cas is cleaner once you finished though.
I used to say charcoal, but I'm a gas convert now

Traitor ;)
We were at a bushcraft course for a stag do, starting our own fire, scewering a fish with our own carved bits of tree and cooking it over the fire with a beer. Best meal I've ever had TBH.
OK so the fish was from Sainsburys but the whole idea of being natural and not using technology made it so much better.
Charcoal all the way.
Charcoal every time.
The only time I've voted in favour of gas was at 2 am after a night out when staying at my mates parents place. They had a massive gas BBQ and a burger without waiting for coals to heat up suited us fine after all the beer :)

That's sort of what I'm trying to explain to these peeps here. In this technologically led world we live in, its great to just do something in the old fashioned way for a change.
Barbequed fish. Yummy. :)

If cooking for alot, I heat in the oven first to make sure they are warm in centre then chuck on a coal BBQ
Charcoal all the way here.
Charcoal, no contest, nuff said!
Oven cook to reduce death count then turn it black over charcoal, ideally with some kind of oak chips to get that nice smoked taste.
I have a gas BBQ but generally just buy those larger disposible onces for convenience.
Anyway, I would like your opinions! I would like to add a poll, but it doesn't work on me old Mac!Poll added.
Poll added.
Cheers mawby :)
Charcoal!
It's just not the same if you don't get to use 3 packs of firelighters, loads of screwed up paper underneath, and spray lighter fluid all over it to get it started :)

Its just not the same if you haven't come away with 3rd degree burns and a slight tummy upset is it?! :)
:) Charcoal is far better for taste and you can "add" tastes to the coals ( like Rosemary.thyme etc etc etc ) that you cannot add on a Gas BBQ ..........but if your catering for large numbers or long periods of time the Gas is better IMO
Cheers

A Gas BBQ is not a BBQ!
How about a forth option - "doesn't matter as long as it's sunny and there's beer"?
