Hi Everyone and i have only just joined this website in responce to some card that was left on my supra a few years back now,Looks like it was left by some guy called Stoner or something as its hard to read his scribble.

Anyway people my situation is one that really has given me a major headache just recently.

I drive a supra imported from Japan bought from a fto dealer that has now closed called umv or something like that who were based in Walsall Uk just of Junction 9 of the m5.

Anyway back to the problem,Car failed its mot on rear tyres and i informed the guy to put some tyres on so all will be well and there would be no problems.

Bloke in his wisdom got the tyres fitted with Dunlop rotation tyres if that means anything to anyone,The ones with the arrow on the tyre wall that have to be fitted on that particular side of the car, apparently lots of companys are using such tyres.

Ever since i have had the car back it handles appauling and everything feels so wrong with this car,Any divit or uneven road surface pulls the car all over the place,The steering has become only what i can descibe as feeling really loose and not in touch with what the front wheels are doing.

Its a bit like driving with 2 ballons on the front of the car,Had all the laser tracking recently done which has made a small difference ,Also had new front tyres to match the back that also made a small amount of handling difference.Tyre pressures are 36psi all rounnd as normall.

To be perfectly honest this car was a dream on worn tyres with exceptional feel and handling,Originally it had Bridgestone tyres on when i first had the car some 4 years back and it was super to drive,Changed the tyres may be 3 times now and this is the only time i have had handling issues and it really is making me mad.

My questions are supra lovers and people in the know,What tyres do you reccomend putting on a Supra and does it have this drastic effect that i am experiencing,I mean these are not cheap budget tyres but the car feels awefull at times ,Even when i am cruising down the motorway in the middle line driving in a straight line before i know it im vearing into another lane. The whole car does not ride or feel good with these tyes and it can be nothing else but tyres.

Advice guys if you can would be appreciated.

Oh by the way i love my Supra,Expecially before my problems ?

Thought i might get some helpfull answers and not some humourous comments and really negative responces.

I may not know a lot about cars but i know that the tyres are on the right way round.

Well, its only an outside chance but...

When he jacked the car up, could he have positioned the axel stands/jack incorrectly under the ball joints of the suspension arms and caused damage or even to the arms themselves? or tie rod ends? bushes? damaged the anti roll bars/joints in any way?

Have you had the suspension checked out for looseness/damage/wear? Any knocking on cornering/going over bumps/accelerating?

Hope its just the tyres although that is a pain as its more money to replace with good rubber,

best of luck

Linda

Thanks Linda and i will look into what you suggest,The car does drive somewhat better since i had it serviced yesterday and had some laser tracking done.

One of the rear tyres was 2 degrees out and adjusting this has made the ride feel more solid and not so sensitive to the road conditions.

Anyway many thaks Linda i appreciate it.

Dunlops should be a good tyre. Has he fitted the same size tyre?

Thats not a stupid question, he may have upped the profile, eg gone from 235/40 to 235/50's, which would oversize the tyre, causing poo handling. The other thing is, after a car has been on a ramp, the springs extend and can take a while to settle. (mine drove odd for two days once after it had been on the ramp for two days having quite a bit done to it. I could even see the ride height was higher than usual, after driving it around for a while, the car settled, and all was good again.)

My car had 235/40R17 on the front when I bought it. It tramlined like mad. I put the proper size 235/45R17 tyres on and it was infinitely better.

Well ive had tyres fitted the wrong way round and not noticed hence my post, my comments were genuine so hope the above wasnt aimed at me.

People here are genuily trying to help and the best place to start is sometimes the obvious and then work you way to fixing the problem

Thanks everyone for all the advice and welcome notes.

Tyre sizes below.

Dunlop.

Front tyres 235/45 zr17

Rear tyres 255/45 zr17

I have got 36psi air pressure in all tyres as thats what i was told when buying the car was the correct pressure.

I only drive it and my Knowledge and interest of how and what works is not my specialist subject.

The dropping the tyre pressure is something i may try as this is something i have not considered doing.

What tyre pressures are you Supra users running.

Yeah i meant Junction 9 of the M6 motorway and they were called umv or umg or something, they were mainly fto importers and have since cloased down.

Not aimed at you directly DNK and i suppose it would be hard for me to believe that tyre fitters would fit a tyre on the wrong way around,But thats me and trust in people and i can see you have a valid point here and this is possible as we all make mistakes.

My problem has only recently happened since having the new tyres fitted,When i was driving with well worn Bridgestone tyres the car was superb.

Have listened to lots of different guys from tyres companys telling me that this happens on all sort of cars,Even telling me that the compound they use in Japan is different from what we use here.Having driven it the last couple of days the car seems to be a little better after the laser tracking,Next stop is trying the reduced tyre pressure.

Are you sure about this because if this is the case then i will take the car back to the garage.

Could you also please explain exactly what this size is as it means nothing to me.

Whats the 40 mean and why would it be a smaller size on the rear of the car.

http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html this explains everything about tyres.

The 40 is the height of the tyre from the rim to the tread, a higher number means there is more rubber and supposedly a softer ride (but can affect cornering / stability as the tyre wall flexes more), than a lower number i.e. "Low Profile"

Why 40 as opposed to 45, sorry can't help, not techie enough.

So are we saying that we have the wrong size tyres on the rear of the car.

Little confused here because there seems to be many people with various different tyre sizes than the ones you are telling me should be on the car.

What i need is what tyre sizes should be on a supra as standard from factory and not a supra that has been upgraded

I have tried finding the answer looking through google for correct toyota supra tyre sizes.

If you look through this forums there seems to be a many people with different size tyres on there cars.

I mean if i am meant to have a 255/40 on the rear and not a 255/45 as stated then i am going back to the garage to tell them they have put the wrong tyres on the car.I have to make sure that i am right here and dont want them to look at me as a complete fool.

Now i got to find out what size wheel i have on the car.

Cheers for that mate anyway.

Edit....YEP There 17" so back to the garage to see what they have to say. They are going to say we replaced them with what size was on the car i guess,Got to be honest i took little notice as to what they was because i was having no problems.
