I have just bought a damaged 94 j-spec tt auto supra,

its only going to be used on the track, exhaust after downpipe cat was missing, so we put on a complete home made exhaust(no cats). it has no restrictor ring

Have taken it out for a run and its boosting to .9

my question is do I still need a restrictor ring?

what part of the exhaust is ring usually put on?

will I need a boost controller?

Cheers

J

If it is only boosting to 0.9bar you do not need a restrictor ring. Have both cats been removed or just the one? Normally on a J-spec Supra if both cats have been removed, the wastegate cannot regulate boost, which causes the boost to go sky high. A restrictor ring basically adds a restriction in the exhaust to create back pressure and keep boost down to a safe level.

If you want to boost above 0.9bar, yes you will need a boost controller or bleed valve.

Both cats have been removed,

do i then have a problem if its only boosting to .9 ?

is the restrictor ring fitted at the manifold or down the exhaust?

Are you sure the 2nd turbo is coming online?

Do you have a boost gauge fitted and if so can you tell us exactly what the boost reading is through the rev range in a high gear (5th or 6th in a manual, 3rd or 4th in an auto).

With both cats removed you should see it climb to 0.6ish bar at 3.6krpm, then a slight drop and it boost to at least 1.2 bar by 4.4k rpm.

If is not then something's wrong.

Unless it's a genuine UK car of course ;)
