View Full Version : Double Headed Unit Space

If - I mean when (think positive) I get my Supra next
month, I've been thinking of replacing the stereo.
The size in the dash is a double the normal space.
I've seen CD changers that can fit in the normal
space for a head unit, and also double height head units
that have sat-nav screens etc.
Can these fit into the Supra?
If I cant fit a CD/MD changer into the front space
where have you guys got yours fitted?
The "boot" is a bit small!
Any space elsewhere?
cheers

My stock head unit died when I went to road-test my car at JIC. They swapped it out for a Kenwood pair which fit into the same slot.
Top unit is the standard radio+whatever (I've changed mine for a radio+MD as I also have a MD walkman); bottom unit is a single CD player. It is controlled by the top unit and it's front panel is a graphic display whereby you can change the type of graphics it shows in response to the audio.
It fills the hole and I get all the features I need: radio, MD and CD.
You could fit another double din unit although the choice isnt that great. Or you could fit a Single din, I opted for the Kenwood MP6090 mp3 player and installed a tray beneath it. There was a little trimming of plastic to be done behind the dash but the end result looks great.

Ideally, I want to swap mine out for a UK-spec stock Toyota unit, if anyone is thinking about replacing their uk unit for something flash.

Paul,
When the expander is fitted to the Jap-spec head unit,
is there still a difference between it and the UK version
(apart from the jap writing for MUTE! )
If there is , then HEY I ALSO WANT a uk-spec head unit !
wonder if a breakers yard might have one?

Sorry, no idea.
I haven't considered using the j-spec head at all. Chucked mine away, even thought it turned out it wasn't faulty at all, just a fuse in the slave amp.
JIC didn't want it, I didn't want it, so it went to the great recycler in the sky.

I know this is all over the place on the BBS, but
Why do people want to change a j-spec to a UK spec?
front lights, rear lights, brakes (i know slightly better) etc.
Would it have been cheaper and easier to simply buy a UK - spec in the first place???
When I get my J-spec - its staying STOCK j-spec
AND PROUD of it :)

All together now: "Oh no it won't".
UK-spec: More power, nicer headlights, more suitable rear lights.
J-spec: typically lower mileage, better maintained, more variants.
So take a pinch of j-spec (say Aerotop), add a little sprinkle of mods, bake in the garage for a week or so and you've got a car which you couldn't have bought in UK-spec with lower mileage.

I see.....
I thought J-spec and UK had the same power, just that the J-spec is limited which gets removed by JIC upon Import.

Nope.
It now appears that the j-spec has a bigger turbo, contrarary to what we've believed *but* the UK-spec has hotter cams, bigger injectors (+fuel pump etc.), a transmission oil cooler, a diff oil cooler.
Read the thread on "Performance differentiators" in technical
A Kenwood Single Din MP3 does the same job as a disk changer - I have 5 CDRs in the little compartment between the seats. This adds up to over 45 Albums.
Kenwood player also looks good when cut in etc.

Dean..
Dont forget UK has got....
Bonnet bulge..
Headlight washers - (or better known as "tusks") useless but rather appealing..
Heated Seats....roll on winter!!
Fancy "Supra" logo on brake calipers unless you are very lucky with your JAP Supra..

The gauge looks lonely though Dean, it needs a little brother (or sister).

That looks pretty nice branners,
didnt think about putting the dials there!
So all of you - what your really saying is I should cancel my Jap Import and get a UK spec instead :(

Absolutely. Why not give JIC a crack at it. They do UK's too.
I'd also be interested in what they bid you on it. :)
Paul..........
In a purely technical sense, the UK spec. turbos are bigger as they have a larger A/R and scroll area.
The J-spec turbines are a greater diameter because they are ceramic as opposed to the alloy steel of the UK turbos. This, basically, enabled Toyota to change the whole torque -versus- horsepower mix of the two cars.
The UK car has more overall horsepower, but the J-spec has greater torque. So it's swings and roundabouts, ultimately.

J

Yer gonna 'av to go into that in more detail guvna, but later; say when I bring this idiosyncratic PITA down to find out why it's so weird (see 120 MPH thread).
I am trying to work out if the Jap or Uk ICE has anything to do with HP or torque.
This has gone a tad off topic[]
