View Full Version : Broken Oil temp sensor
Got a broken oil temp sensor, dial doesn't read also has no back lights when rest are all illuminated...
Any ideas on a fix or how/where to start with trouble shooting...?
Thanks in advance Carl.. :)
there isnt a dial for the oil temp?
sure you dont mean water temp? unless your talking about aftermarket?

Yes mate... it's an after market one.
check the wires at the back?
or poss fuses?

What type of gauge is it? Electrical or capillary(SP)?
If it is electrical, my money is that the connector has fallen out hence no signal or power.
Not really got any experience with these, they were also fitted to the car when I bought it and it wasn't working then...
Would a capillary(SP) one be one with an oil feed to the gauge...?
I will go down and check the fuses, connectors etc... do remember it looking like a bit of spaghetti junction behind there....!
Thanks Carl
Right here's an update as I finally got round to having a look....
The gauge only has two wires going into it, these control the lighting and are connected off the light and switch from the glove box, some excellent jap wiring.
The gauge therefore I guess is a mechanical or capillary type, with what looks like a continuous piece of copper running form the rear of the gauge to the sandwich plate.
I'm guessing the problem is that this piece is broken somewhere along the line. Or there is a problem with the sensor or sandwich plate....?
The gauges are Omori gauges if that helps
Thanks Carl

If its capillary type and the feed is broken, then you have an oil leak, so blank off the take off point.
Check the bulb still illuminates with a Voltmeter, that shouldnt have failed due to a broken line, and if its the Oil temp, you wont have a leak, the temp probe is at the end of the line into presumably a sandwich plate, it will be safe to drive around no probs, one thing I would say is that unless you take the probe out of the sanny plate your probably not going to have much flex in the line to investigate
The omori temp gauges are not pressurised so you can just take off the plastic glass face, it is stuck on with glue, be careful pulling at it, as the little needles e.t.c are very delicate
Yea I think its a bit of a double failure, the leds are bust and the sensor is dud.
The wiring etc and feed for the gauge is live and connected so must be the LEDs, so that would mean removing the thread I take it...
As for the temp sensing, what is more likely to be broken the line of copper or the sensor in the sandwich plate itself.
Also are these easy to source if so where form and are they interchanceable between makes i.e. will i have to source Omori lines/sensors only
P.S I have no oil leak thankyou :p :)
More than likely the copper wire will have corroded, best sourcing a new oil temp omori gauge, I sold mine to someone on here a good few months back, check the gtr owners club the liner owners love them, I'm sure their made in either Thailand or Malaysia
If in doubt google;)
