View Full Version : IT (Networking/Broadband) Help please!...
As some of you may know, since connecting to Virgin.net ADSL, I've been experiencing terrible DL rates (About 200kb/s, I've hit 2.5 and 3mb on 2 occasions whilst testing before work)...
I've just plumbed my router into the test socket in my BT landline, and run the test on www.speedtest.bt.com, and it's come back with the following :
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: http://www.speedtester.bt.com/images/help.jpg -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 4896 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 319 kbps
Does this mean the problem's at my end? And what could it be? I'm on a wireless network, which is currently showing 54mb/s, but I've tried it by wiring into the network too and had the same poor results...
GO here this will fix your problem bud

Hmmm.. It didn't seem to help mate (But cheers :)) I got a 100kb/s download speed :( - But I've just played with my router settings and got to 1.3mb, wahey!... (Although I believe BT are telling me I should expect 4mb... But it's a start!)...
Now I got this :(

Mind you, hopefully this isn't coincidence, and thanks to fiddling...

thats wank mate something really wrong there bud, what did you set the mtu at? and did you set it for the network adaptor your using.
failing that have you any activity on your router lights when your not browsing maybe a virus or if you have wireless router maybe someone nicking your bandwidth.
last question what router is it?
Just tested again, it's :

:(
I've got a Netgear DG834G, tried it encrypted with WEP and WPA, and even turned the wireless off and ethernetted it into my laptop... I've cleaned both PC's for viruses and so on, only do my speedtest when I only have firefox running... When I'm not online the lights just show true and clear...
It's a pain (Was going to swear but can't... lol Imagine I said *** *** &&^^$ ££$£&%"%^!$^%%&$^*)... I knew I'd sacrifice some of my old 10mb connection to move to a nice place, but I didn't think it'd be this bad!!... (And now Virgin M are rolling out 20mb... **Sobs**)
Hmmm... Just changed the multiplexing method to LLC Based, and got :

Plus my location on their map keeps changing, although it was steady over the past week... Can anyone recommend anywhere better than www.speedtest.net (I don't want to do www.speedtest.bt.com if I'm over a meg as they'll try and tell me to be happy with that)...

Pot have you updated the firmware in the router? I swear by these routers ive installed about 10 of them for friends and family now and they work great!
Yeah, it's all up to date... I think the fact Virgin.Net supply you with the simple Netgear CD, and not a customised ISP one that does it for you, they expect it all to work... I've had a whole stack of issues with them so far TBH, however, after me playing, it seems to be settling around the 2.5mb area...

Hopefully this'll be a permenant thing, and then I can moan about the line still, as it's all to do with expected bandwith, and BT's faliure point below that... Now as my post showed above, the expected BW is 4mb, and I'm showing an average of 2.5mb, which is 62.5%... So I've still got room to shout and kick my feet...
It's just a p!$$er I've got a bit of know how so I can click things and get myself out of any mess I get into, if Mr Joe Bloggs was in my situation, he'd still be downloading this, and wouldn't have had the chance to type yet!... lol
Have a look at your routers log. I'm guessing you've had two or more disconnects in a fairly short amount of time.
This causes DSLMax to think you've got a dodgy line. In order for it to maintain a stable connection it reduces the speed until the line stops disconnecting.
As long as you remain stable your speed will go back up over the 3-4 days.
I went through a month of this earlier in the year.

Try this tweak test and post the results up.
Should be able to guide you from that.
Cheers Bash :)
Results are attached... (Wasn't sure from the links if I could get a text format, so I got a screenshot instead)...

Stats look very good!
Rwin setting looks like the only 1 out of place but you are seeing a 97% efficiency and i would be suprised if you could get anymore.
Try the speed test on the same site:-
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1
Use the 2nd server down(speakeasy)
Are you using windows XP?
Cheers Bash :)
