New autobox = louder car!

As has been documented I had a refurbed autobox installed last week. Since then I swear exhaust is louder. It's more noticeable at lower speeds. I thought it was just me but a colleague has commented on how loud it is now. :blink:

Why would this be?

I'm also hearing more of that fluttery sound when you start to boost and then lift off. Not a BOV noise more of a fluttery sound.

They would have had to move the exhaust to do the box, you might want to check you don't have a gap or gasket gone in the exhaust..

I'm not sure they would have had to move the box TBH. Had a look under the car with them when I picked it up. It came close but I reckon it was an easy out job.

Also, the sound is definitely coming from the back box not from anywhere else.

The exhaust needs to come off to replace the box as the prop has to come out. As mentioned, I'd get it checked to make sure it's not blowing on one of the joints.

Daft question then. What's the best way to tell? Just listen for exhaust noise from the wrong area? Look for smoke from around the joints?

It's a bit tricky to do at home (especially for us 'larger' blokes). You'll need to get it on a proper ramp, get a mate to cover the end of the exhaust and listen for any air escaping from the joints (it'll be very obvious if there is a problem).

I usually just go to my local tyre and exhaust place for stuff like this, they have all the kit to diagnose and fix things like this in no time.

Another method, is to get a bit of paper towel, tape it to the end of a long screwdriver / thing. Then reach from the side of the car and wave it around at the joints and see if it's blown around at all.

I took the car to a one of the exhaust places. They had a thorough look all around but were adamant there is nothing wrong.

So, either, the car just sounds healthier following the box swap, cambelt swap, aux belt swap etc or I'm imagining it.
