View Full Version : radio pin-outs
CAn anyone help with the radio wiring on my 94 MKIV import. The existing double din unit has two connectors going to it, the small one goes to the amp I guess and the other brings power etc to the unit. I need to know where to pick up power, aerial control etc.
I've got the new Kenwood MP3 unit fitted but am desperate to get it connected up.

It would be far simpler to get a suitable wiring harness
Halfords do 'em ............ same as MR2 if I remember
JB should be able to confirm......... I think thats what he did
HTH
This is what i posted previously about fitting the Kenwood
The Dash removal is in fact ever so easy.
The most important thing as Pete points out - DO NOT put the ignition on with the top part of the dash out, which houses the airbag light, otherwise it'll stay on !!
There are about 5 screws across the top of the dash, once these are removed the top housing comes down, unplug the harnesses - no worries about knowing which is which as they are all unique.
Pull the cover from around the dials, pull the cover from around the gearstick, then just pull the cover from around the stereo and aircon buttons etc. - disconnect all harnesses, again all unique, and its away !!
Easy as that, after taking mine out about 10 times, it now goes in about 60secs flat
Stereo fitting :-
Four screws to remove the entire stereo cage - worth disconnecting the aerial relay box, as this makes it hard to get out - unplug the stereo harness - previous to all of this you should have purchased a suitable harness for a Supra from Halfords, JB has one he might sell you.
Now down the left inside the centre console where you removed the stereo you should find the stereo harness dissapears into another connector, disconnect it from this and your Halfords harness will now fit directly into that.
Remove stereo from Cage - sell to Paul Booth for a massive amount of money - fit the Kenwood in the top half.
This is where it gets fun - In the correctly located position you will find you cannot fit the Kenwood surround as it fouls the dash - no problem cut the dash !! - there is a lip around the stereo apperture (v.thin plastic), just match it up to the stereo and trim it off, leaving the rest of the trim in place - its very simple, no chance of damage to the dash. This now allows the stereo to sit, as my picture resplendent with trim. Now put it all back together, make sure the harness to the airbag is connected, and power that baby up.
Not being a purist I manage quite admirably with the stock amp etc. - It doesnt matter at 150mph
To fit the blank as I did, it requires the blank to be mounted in an odd position, not as it should do, plus cutting the Kenwood trim (scarey).
Hope it helps - I'm ready to be b*llocked if i got anything wrong
Dean..
Thanks for the advice.
Trouble is, Halfords can't match the big connector. We looked at an MR2, but that was different. Mine has much smaller pins and many of them. Strating to tear my hair out now.

Try www.MKIV.com and go to the wiring diagrams.
Thanks for the help.
I must have been having an off day yesterday; didn't realise that the head unit gets all its supplies from the amp.
What a pratt!!!

I think you are looking at the plugs that used to connect directly into the back of the Stereo - you won't match them.
You need to locate the harness connection inside the dash on the carpet, when you unplug that you'll find the ISO connectors that Halfords due for the Supra just plug straight in !! - Honest..

Yup, you're right of course. As I said, I was having an off day!
Ripped the plastic "sub" out and used the hole for the cd changer.
Kenwood MP3 / CD unit sounds great just using stock speakers although I will upgrade them soon.

John,
I'm thinking of getting a new CD changer/head unit for my supra.
watcha mean you "Ripped the plastic "sub" out and used the hole for the cd changer.
"
whats a sub? you mean the subwoofer speaker in the rear? why would you want to get rid of that?
I looked at blaupunkt's in dash cd-changer...nice
shame the head unit is made soooooo CHEAPLY ughh.
THe existing amplifier under the passenger seat drives a 'sub-woofer' behind the rear seat. Changing to the kenwood meant I no loger had a sub output, so I took the platic moulding out (4 bolts) and used the space for the multi changer. This also leaves room for another changer or DAB unit in the future.
I am very impressed with the Kenwood 6090. I can leave the wifes dance mix cd's in the changer and bung in an MP3 CD-R with about 150 of my favourite tracks in the head unit. (It's her car really, she didn't like driving the Skyline!)

Will this wiring harness also work with a Kenwood double din stereo DPX-MP4030
