View Full Version : HELP!
Please bear with me, as I have never really ventured into the realms of ICE (sounds like something from CS Lewis doesn't it!) Switched my CD player on, smell of burning insulation - that awful fishy smell! - big crackle from somewhere behind me  & then no sounds...zilch from rear, tweeter & sub, VERY faint sound from fronts on full volume. ^Anyone clue'd up on this stuff tell me where to start? I was going to replace it all anyway but it wasn't No.1 on the list - but I hate not having any sounds at all! I will go back & read all posts re removals etc but have no idea as to cause or how much damage there may be. With hindsight there may have been faint smell of burning beforehand which I didn't register at the time as being 'in car'. All suggestions (preferably polite, but whatever!) gratefully received.
Sorry but you dont say if you are running any amps in your system.
If you are the prob could lay there if you say the burning smell/sound came from behind you !!!

I'm no expert, but it sounds (smells?) like a *possible* heatsink problem on your headunit.
I've had one go before, the glue they use is steeeenky pinky, and once gone, no sounds will eminate. I took mine to an electronics guru I worked with, and he officially said it was dead. See if you can trace the smell - if it is that, then hopefully it's *just* the head unit, the crackle on the speakers shouldn't have done them any damage (mehopes!).
As the dash removal is a complete bast, you could go to a local friendly ICE shop (I dunno where you live, but Ipswich Car Radios is a good un if you're one of the many East Anglians here) and get their thoughts.
Ipswich Car Radios know ALL about Supras.....their perfectionist installer even turned the ignition off before taking the dash off because he knew of the airbag light...
Also if you are runing a stock i.e. factory fitted head unit if i'm right there is a amp under the n/s seat could be your prob ???????
try to find someone with a second hand unit should be plenty about as a lot of ppl upgrade their i.c.e. and bypass the factory amp !
Sorry should have said, yes it is stock factory unit - couldn't tell where the smell was coming from but didn't seem to be around head unit. Didn't check under seat for amp, is it easy to get at? Head unit seems to be working OK as such, just no noise except for titchy bit from front speakers which seems odd if amp has gone? I don't really want to get involved in major panel-ripping exercises at the moment, but would be pleased if I can salvage it for a while without too much aggro! Borrowing an amp sounds a reasonable option if it's not too much of a PITA to fit.

I have a complete working J'spec system that you're welcome too
Unfortunatley you will have to take the dash panels out to get at the head unit, whether it is to take it to be fixed ^or to put in a new one if that is you problem.
It is not too difficult to do, just need to match the plugs.

Is that *with* slave amp Matt, only I've got a spare slave amp and wiring arriving soon (Oooh, I'm gonna regret that).

Den yo' de man.
You are a star matt, thank you very much - will keep me going until I can afford the hideously expensive system I'd like! Phil - is the dash a PITA to get off? I think there are some posts elsewhere in this section re panel removal etc which I have yet to locate!
Matt whereabouts are you? I am near Peterborough.
Fran
Dash removal is really easy, have a look in this forum or on MKIV.com (sorry can't remember exact location, but on MKIV.com it's under boost gauge install)
To replace a stock stereo like for like, i would say is no more than half an hour.

If you check out Pete Betts TRL site, there are instructions in there.
Thanks guys for all your help, really appreciate it. Top blokes! :cheesy:
