Just got a pair of 6x4 JBL's from Alex.

I know it'll be ages till i get them installed in the rear side panels., So i've decided to go all MAX POWER, and build myself a nice box to mount them in.

In true UK Style TV tradition, I managed to do it with just the contents of my shed, a saw, few nails and screws.

No MDF or any of that new fangled material anywhere

I bet you're seriously impressed with that !! - If i get enough orders, I might quit my day job, and make them for a living

It is temporary really.... I just wanted to see what they sounded like.

Will take them out before attending any meets - would be seriously embarrasing if anyone looked in there.

And what DO they sound like?

Any rattling?  Them's 6x9s right, how do they sound with the back seat up?

If you'd said I could have sent you the MDF parcel shelf they were still attached to....it had the 6x9 holes ready cut and you could have modified it easily...DOH!

Well done Flip yes they are 6x9's -  I was still thinking about wood when i typed 6x4....

They sound good - As i said very temporary - just wanted to get them in for a trial.

Alex - how would you have a got an MDF parcel shelf into that little packing box though

I'm also really interested in making a parcel shelf of sorts, how did ya do it, and how deep was the resulting boot after the shelf was in?

I'm thinking of one as security more than anything (covering up some subs maybe).  Lots of rattling to cover up!

To be honest, i think once you put anything in the boot, thats it..

Even with my 'compact' design, wooden crate, there's virtually no room. The total space left is filled by a map, hard hat, and hi-vis vest.

Tried to put some bits in on Sunday from the DIY shop - no chance !!

Once the cars becomes a weekend only toy, I'm not worried about losing the boot space, but at present any serious structure in the boot would be a definate no-no

Flip,

The parcel shelf I had was out of my old Rover 214. but all you need is a slab of MDF with two holes cut in which is all held in place by rods that slot into the existing boot cover.... as its a wide boot best to re-inforce the underside of the MDF as 6x9's and 7x10's are quite heavy especially when you go down a bumpy road and the whole lot is trying to snap it two!

Ideally you need to create a "box" which tilts the speakers towards the cabin and within that box you should mount a 4-way amp (or 2x 2way) to run all 4 rear speakers. I would also make sure that its screwed down better than how Dean has got it as I wouldn't expect that to hold....I am cringing and hoping my poor speakers are ok...!!

Not going to dignify the comment about how I would post the rear shelf with a response !!!   ;)

Right, excellent, thanks.

I've decided that I'm going to try and make a parcel shelf and mount a massive 12" sub on it.  This will no doubt make a huge amount of rattling, but I'm planning on carpeting it, and this way I can still just open the rear hatch and get to the space saver etc.

Any thoughts anyone?

Theres nothing wrong with my Carpentry skills !!

Those speakers ain't going no where

Except back in the garage perhaps...

Not doubting your carpentry its just that I would prefer to see all 8 screw holes being used!!

Flip,

Try to wedge it in using the slant of the rear seats and the clips for the original boot cover...if you get you dimensions right it should stay still (sort of)!

Okay, my next question is - will the sub be alright without an enclosure?  Or will it sound like poo?

It won't win an award but it will do the job! The more secure it is the better. You want to limit any movement to the sub cone itself!

Right, excellent.  There's some sound-deadening thing you can spray on the wood etc near it to reduce vibration I think?  Or did I dream it?

As long as it doesn't look like a pig's ear but it sounds nice - bonus.

Box it in and they will sound even better
