Crank pulley woes!

Well after having a squealing when first starting (and on kickdown) since around Christmas my crank pulley came apart on friday.

I was on my way to work and put my foot down on a slip road to join a dual carridgeway (50mph limit). Everything seemed fine but then I could hear this strange squeaky squealing noise. To start with I thought it was the old transit next to me but after overtaking him I realised it was coming from me. I then thought it was coming from the heater or aircon so messed with the fan controls but that didnt effect it. Then I realised it changed with how much gas I was giving it. No warning lights had come on but after putting the window down I could hear it was coming from the engine.

I took it slowly to the next junction and pulled off. Stopped at the roundabout at the top and tried to turn the wheel to see how the power steering was doing. It was reluctant to move and one of the warning lights flickered so I didnt try to push it. Went slowly around the roundabout and took the third exit to pull over on a quieter road (if there is such a thing in Bournemouth rush hour traffic!). Stopped and turned off.

Clutching at hope I left it a few minutes and started it again, same noise. Turned it straight off and had a look under the bonnet. Straight away saw the outer part of the crank pulley laying on its own to the side. The belt was still on and it looked like the tensioner had done its best to take up the slack but it was obviously slipping!

Called the AA who sent a flat bed out to take her away. He did have some problems finding something to attach the winch to. Said that I should be careful as because the car is modified some drivers can refuse to attempt to take the car as it isn't straight forward and could need a specialist that I would have to pay for. But he said that he didn't like to be beaten so attached some straps underneath and because there is the upward gap in my veilside front bumper he was able to get it on the truck (with the help of a few block of wood!).

So off it went to the garage where they said they should be able to get a new pulley on tuesday. Joy...

I had asked the same garage if it was the crank pulley when it was in for its last mot and service in january but they said they didnt think so and thought it was tensioner that was making the noise. Guess they were wrong! Oh well.. I know the pulley is around £200, just hope the labour isn't massively expensive as well.

I think I am very lucky because reading past accounts on here it could have been a lot worse! It didnt look like it had done any more damage so I am keeping my fingers crossed..!!

If you have a squealing noise, get it checked out!!
